Home Depot has a shop light replacement, its about 99.00 and is brighter and whiter and lasts longer than the regular shop lights. The unit is about 1.5 feet by 2 feet and easy to install.

The LED bulb replacement is pretty good although not as brite as the shop lights I gave you the link for below. Easy install, easy to wire up and will light up any area to a very bright white light.

I can guarantee that with these there will be no dark spots.

2 ft. 400-Watt Equivalent Integrated LED Dimmable White High Bay Light High Output 18,000 Lumens 5000K Daylight

As for the T8 or T12 bulb replacement you disconnect the ballast and hook it to power on most and thats it.

Here is a direct replacement with NO wiring changes

I picked up new LED shop light fixtures for about $30 each at Menards. It was cheaper to replace the entire fixture than buying the replacement bulbs. These are daylight, 4 ft, 2 bulb style with plug and pull switch even though mine are direct wire on a wall switch. I just replaced the cover plate on the electrical ceiling box and cut the plug off to wire them up. I suppose I could have just added outlets to the ceiling boxes but....These are similar to the fixtures I used https://www.menards.com/main/lighting-ceiling-fans/commercial-lights/smart-electrician-reg-5000-lumens-46-x-6-led-tread-plate-shop-light/pes120led-st1-s-4800/p-1493360352403.htm. There are some fixtures on their site for less than $20.

As soon as I had them all up a buddy of mine who is an electrician by trade found some 4 ft x 4 bulb direct wire LED fixtures at a supply house that they were clearing out at the same price as the Menards lights. I added a few of those to the others and now I need sun glasses when I turn them all on.

Sometimes the ballast is not compatable with the bulbs. This is the case where it is easier and cheaper to replace the entire unit.  As me how I know.

I put these up. They are regularly on sale for $19.99. They are the brightest lights I've ever had in any garage.

blue light is bad for eyes and what LEDs put out

https://news.yahoo.com/led-light-damage-eyes-health-authority-warns-002221659.html

The "blue light" in LED lighting can damage the eye's retina and disturb natural sleep rhythms, France's government-run health watchdog said this week.

New findings confirm earlier concerns that "exposure to an intense and powerful [LED] light is 'photo-toxic' and can lead to irreversible loss of retinal cells and diminished sharpness of vision," the French Agency for Food, Environmental and Occupational Health & Safety (ANSES) warned in a statement.

The agency recommended in a 400-page report that the maximum limit for acute exposure be revised, even if such levels are rarely met in home or work environments.

The report distinguished between acute exposure of high-intensity LED light, and "chronic exposure" to lower intensity sources.

Led lighting is variable by color temperature. 2600 Kelvin is the same as soft white incandescent bulbs, 3000 Kelvin will be daylight incandescent, 4000 Kelvin will be still mostly white starting into the blue spectrum, 5000 Kelvin is ice blue and 6000 Kelvin is blue. A shop light to eliminate shadows should be in the 3000-4000 Kelvin range. I wonder if the French health folks even know that based on that short, condensed blurb of a 400 page report that was presented. I have 3000 Kelvin ceiling lights throughout my home, 4000 Kelvin in the shop, and I have no more trouble sleeping than any other 60+ YO male adolescent.  angel   The use of LED lighting has significantly lowered my power bill.

Sometimes the ballast is not compatible with the bulbs. This is the case where it is easier and cheaper to replace the entire unit.  As me how I know.

Recently replaced tubes in the old fixtures. You reroute the old wires bypassing the ballast. A bit confusing as there was no instruction at first. Went online and every site had different thought/description on how to do it. Finally by accident the instructions fell out one of the boxes  Roll Eyes then all was good.

I replaced my 4' tubes with the ballast delete style. Removed ballast and rewired. There is a type available that is plug and play using the original ballast, but the buzzing from the ballast is what I wanted to eliminate. Love them, instant on and no flickering or noise.  cooldude

I just posted info for people to peruse and discern. I did not tell anyone to not use LED lights!
It has been a well known medical fact for decades that the blue light wave spectrum accelerates the aging of the eyes.  This is why the blu blocker sunglasses became available over a decade ago. now called all type of fancy names. You must've seen the commercials?
