I imagine we are all creatures of our learned habits. I know I am. With all this corona virus talk, I've been told by many in the know, to quit shaking hands, giving hugs, touching your face, etc. I understand this makes sense. But implementing these things is near impossible for me. When I have seen a friend my automatic reaction has been to extend my hand. I can't begin to count the amount of times I have rubbed my eyes, itched my face.
 I think I'm doomed.

Yes.

A different world, but many things in public areas should have been disinfected a lot more all along.  And then personally:  keep your own pen handy, pick up the mail and wash your hands, touch an ATM cash machine and wash your hands, touch a gas pump handle and wash your hands, etc.

We just need more time before a full blown pandemic occurs in the US.  A vaccine is probably 6 months out, and more than likely a year out.  No one knows if the summer will cause it to wain like  a normal flu.  We can only hope.

But we will come out of this stronger than ever as a country; our medical community and research abilities are second to none.

Maybe a pair of nitrile gloves would help, not so much for protection but as a constant reminder of where you stick your hands.

I've used nitriles to work on my bikes and trucks and other jobs for many years.  They are good for solvent protection, but they are really thin and easily tear, don't breathe at all, and I never get used to how they feel. (hand condoms)

A bit of a drift, but I want to do a shout out for some new work gloves I got in a 10-pack at Walmart last week. Wells-Lamont Foam Latex.  They are also disposable, but are going to last more than single use nitriles, they breathe, and have good grip.  Much more user friendly than nitriles.  Only came in Large, and a bit too big for me, but still very usable with a sandy (gripy) latex rubber palm and fingers..

https://www.walmart.com/ip/Wells-Lamont-Men-s-Foam-Latex-Work-Gloves-10-Pair-Large/822303239

I wore a pair the other day in hard use, and they are good to go again.

They sell a lot of different styles and types of work gloves; including butcher friendly anti-cut similar to the above.

Like so much that is made public through media there is exaggeration and panic bait.

Touch your face is overstated.  Viruses don't crawl around on your face.  Most diseases are transmitted mouth to hand to mouth.  Your hand picks up germs (viruses?) from the hand of a carrier or from something his hand has recently touched.  It doesn't enter your system until you touch your mouth, nose or eye.  Those are the gateways to your internal self.  Your skin is the wall that protects you.  There are some diseases that can be transmitted elsewhere through a break in the skin.

The bottom line is be aware of what you're doing.  When you have touched another's hand or some unclean object (almost every object) clean your hands before you touch your mouth, nose or eyes.  It's best to learn to not often touch your mouth, nose or eyes.

I will not allow the fear, panic, to dictate that I become a don't touch isolationist.  I will pay more attention to washing my hands and cleaning them with sanitizer.  I will try to be considerate by cleaning my hands before an expected hand touching incident.

I am a sixty-nine year old diabetic.  I am listed as high risk.  I will do what I should responsibly do to not participate in the spread of disease.  I'm going to die someday and I am okay with that.

Interesting note on the advice we're getting.  Our youngsters are being taught to sneeze or cough into their elbows rather than their hands.  We are being told to touch elbows rather than shake hands.  Anybody else see something wrong with this picture?

Great observation!   Maybe try this, not quite the Harlem Shuffle.  https://nypost.com/2020/03/02/wuhan-shake-greeting-goes-viral-amid-coronavirus-outbreak/

I'm 56, but have several medical conditions that are in the at risk category.  I'll still live life.  Cheryl works at the college library and has an option to do some work from home.  I am encouraging that!   cooldude

I like your last sentence, and let's hope so.  I think the best lesson we can learn from this is to reduce our dependence on China, especially where lifesaving medicines and antibiotics are concerned.  The second lesson is to prepare.  Perhaps having extra respirators, PPG for doctors and nurses and designated quarantine space.

I have been obsessed with clean hands and not touching door handles etc for years.  I wear a vest so I can use it to open doors.  Wash my hands so much they crack so I have to use Cetaphil frequently - it works whereas hand lotion doesn't.  Don't touch my face unless I just sanitized hands.  Use the sanitizer on the grocery carts.  As a result I rarely get colds and flu.  Until I attend a family gathering and someone just HAS to show up sick.  Then I catch it.  And get pissed for their selfishness.

I use nitrile gloves daily in the shop.  Yeah they are a pain, tear easily, usually have to replace them for tearing.  Nice to keep the hands grease free and keep the acetone and paint off my hands. They make donning leather gloves harder as they are grippy.  So I didn't yesterday then bumped my hand against the spinning high speed grinder with flap wheel and blended my hand.  Ouch.  Thanks for the tip on the Wells Lamont gloves Jess.  Have to check them out.

I’m not doing a damn thing different than I usually do because I know most people out there aren’t very hygienic to begin with. I’ll use a pinky to pull a public door open and use my shoulder or back to push a public door open and use my foot to hold a door if it needs it.

When getting self serve coffee, I’ll take a cup from the middle of the stack as well as a lid. When taking a drink out of a public refrigerator I’ll grab 1 or 2 back.

My wife actually scolded a woman In Walmart the other day who sneezed without covering her face and got a dirty look in return.

As for the virus, I’m not running scared. I lived through HIV/AIDS epidemic and that was a crazy time. We made it through SARS, MERSA, Avian Flu, Swine Flu and who knows what else that was considered to be the worst virus ever. I’m 55 and in decent health and the Mrs is a little younger. Our daughter is actually traveling to Ireland later this week to see her friend who is studying abroad for a semester.

Isn't bleach a good hand sanitizer?

Sure it's harsh but you don't need but half a capful.  But it sure is cheap and kills germs dead.  No?

Do people need designer (scented) hand sanitizer?

The Costco lady at the door was sanitizing the shopping cart handles for those entering the store.

After I watched her use the same wipe on a dozen carts, I passed when it was my turn.

Stocking up on toilet paper but not food?  That's what it looked like at the local Walmart.  Seems like if you run out of food, you won't need much toilet paper.

am hoping chest bumping (like baseball/nfl players do sometimes)  catches on vs. shaking hands or now as said in the news touching elbows to meet and greet.  There are a few big chested ladies in our office that need a good bumping....    Cheesy

One of those ladies came up to me yesterday and we just bumped elbows together is all.     Kiss

Ok so in my previous comment I said we weren’t changing anything but after the President announced the Europe restrictions on Wednesday night, my wife and I decided to pull the plug on our daughter’s trip to Ireland yesterday. That was met with quite a bit of frustration and disappointment on her part, she worked, saved and made sacrifices to afford this trip, it was in the works for quite a few months. We told her at the rate things are changing and how decisions are being made world wide anything can happen at a moments notice.

As it turns out it was a good call, Ireland made an announcement a few hours later regarding their plans and new restrictions and her friend who she was to go see (she is doing a semester of studying abroad at a university near Dublin) was told she needed to vacate her dorm by Wednesday next week.

I refuse to panic. On the other hand I am being aware and refraining from shaking hands and hugging where appropriate and I am also being more fastidious than normal about frequent hand washing, etc. My first reaction to all the closings of schools, public venues, gatherings of over 250 was that I felt like they were over reacting but upon further reflection I have determined that if you are going to go to those kinds of measures to contain the spread at large gatherings it makes more sense to do it now while the situation is in it's relative infancy rather than after large numbers are infected already and the actions will have much less effect.
I am still going to live my life and make reasonable changes as needed.
