Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: March 11, 2020, 05:50:07 AM »

Rain was being called for... what's new, right? Dang, this surely has seemed to be an unusually wet winter this year! Maybe Greta is right, or maybe there is another explanation... Who can know? All the information we get is heavily skewed by 'advocates' of one position or the other, so how are we supposed to know?

Passive acceptance of explanations through 'political persuasion' seems a foolhardy way to seek ‘truth’ and a path towards making sound decisions and doing the right thing. I'm more than a little frustrated by how everything nowadays is 'weaponized' for political purposes, and... Oh well... We still must deal with rain no matter what the cause or long-term implications, so...

I stayed each night in Sulphur, LA, Victoria and Laredo, TX, with full awareness I might end up having to spend two or even three nights at any one of them... depending... We really lucked out, though, as the doom and gloom predictions didn't happen as projected, and we were able to press on. By arriving in Laredo when we did, we were able to let the little rain there pass over us during the night, so we could continue riding during the day!

I'd seriously considered remaining in Hattiesburg one more day to do laundry and to catch up on naps, writing about this adventure... and being downright lazy! Nope, Jim Cantore got my attention, and I chose not to take any chances. That proved to be a good call, as we did encounter a few drops now and then, and a smattering of wet patches on the road each of the following three days... but no actual rain to speak of!

In Victoria I thought about cutting more or less straight across to Del Rio... The forecast caused an abrupt abandonment of that possibility! Yep, there was ol' Jim again in front of an ominous looking weather map pointing out a big blob of dark green, orange, and red just over in Mexico that was headed straight for Del Rio, so... I took the safer option of heading down to Laredo after all... A bit of rain was called for there, too, but it was expected to pass during the wee hours of the early morning... it did! We'd successfully skirted around all that nasty stuff... that later produced tornados in central Tennessee...

The motel in Victoria we landed at was one I've stayed in before... Not a bad place at all... but perhaps its best feature is the Denny's Restaurant next door... All that day I'd been anticipating dinner… and a treat I haven't had in a while... Flapjacks! It's good to reward ourselves now and then, ya know...

are there any wells fargo banks

Early the following morning, I hesitatingly pulled the curtain back just enough to allow a wee peek outside to see... ALL DRY! Eureka! Time to get it in gear and make haste in a hurry... wouldn't want to waste that! No, wait... better check the most current forecast... just in case... It was very promising... but if we didn't get going fairly soon, that window could slam shut on us!

By the time ALI was loaded and her partner had completed the three Ss, rush hour traffic had moderated and daylight had fully blossomed... so, her side-stand was put in the best position... Again, we did encounter one or two spritzels and a patch of wet pavement now and then, but nothing of any consequence... We'd been lucky so far, and one more good day held the promise of 'flanking' the multi-colored blob on Jim's weather map... and so it came to pass...

The following morning a brief pre-dawn sprinkle in Laredo had passed and everything had completely dried by the time we pulled away from the motel... The sun was even coming out, but... the wind was now seriously cranking! Out of the northwest, too... the direction we'd be heading all day! Weather is almost never perfect on any road trip anyway, so I surely ain't complaining here... In fact, I was quite pleased overall with the way everything had turned out!

We found our way to Del Rio... and to the same motel we'd stayed at last time there... It was here last month that I had learned of my good friend in Alabama having been referred to Hospice, and we'd reversed course... Baring something unanticipated, we'll at long last continue on westward this time... maybe…

Robin,

Thanks, bud! Not having the 'advantage' of a spouse to give me daily marching orders, I must cypher things out for myself... and, now I think I understand why our Creator gave us women after all! Dang hard work trying to avoid the wetness while remaining mobile at the same time!!! A big part of that challenge is not to head in a direction that will lead us into a 'cul de sac', trapping us and  forcing us to hunker down for several days...

For a guy not inclined to plan, moist periods like these sure do demand a lot... Oh well, it sure beats sitting in front of the tube in that danged ol' recliner... In spite of all the challenges, I'm still mighty proud to be here!!!

With a breakfast like that, I wouldn't have to worry about the weather.   I'd need to go back to the room and lay down for a while.   Man O Man that looks good!

Ron,

That was actually my dinner that evening! I did go back to the room and lay down, though... I haven't perfected the art of the nap by any means, but I continue to pursue vastly more experience... Meals like that do aid in my research...   coolsmiley

On the DDT wind scale where exactly does Cranking occur?

Just curious if it is below bodacious and above stiff breeze

Perhaps knowing your leaning angle to go straight might help us out

Loved the installment .... and the dinner choice

I do like my blueberry pancakes  and eggs for dinner on occasion

Mike,

Scenery-wise, I agree that I am too far south... However, I'm a little bit delicate and the temp readings up there have a way of dissuading me... or at least deferring my arrival-time selection for up there for a bit more moderate weather... Snow is nice, I reckon... I'm just guessing here... as, I have virtually no experience with that weird stuff at all! I've spent nearly my entire life below the Mason-Dixon Line.

Oss,

'Cranking' is when you find yourself banking straightaways so much that 'Chicken Stripes' on tires start disappearing! It wasn't strong enough to cause any metallic scrapping or anything, but passing a big truck was spookier than exchanging wedding vows! In the case described in the above story, it was well beyond a stiff breeze, and if it wasn't more than bodacious, it was right there at it! Glad you enjoyed it, my friend... I surely enjoy making those memories!!!

Avanti,

Usually between 4am and 4pm, although on very rare occasion it has been before or after those times... Not meant as a flippant answer, but... It all depends upon weather and need to depart... and as much as possible, the types of roads I'll be riding... A more or less typical time would be between 8am and 9am. I like to wait for rush hour traffic to wind down, but I do prefer to be out and about early, so... a compromise of sorts...

Also, being on the road during dark times tends to combine limited visibility with increased critter activity... a bad mixture. Although riding during darkness does have some advantages, the risks almost always outweigh the rewards, in my experience, so I do very little of it... and then only when I feel a legitimate need to.

Rain, risk of frozen surfaces, and traffic are the primary factors in determining KSU times... Because I'm retired with few obligations, I'm only rarely 'in a hurry'. When I was still living a more typical life, however, I often found myself needing to 'blitz' on given days... In those cases I would leave quite early... often before daybreak.
