Sometimes ya just gotta go...

Winter Springs, FL - Occasionally...

« on: March 12, 2020, 06:09:17 AM »

In light of current health concerns, should we suspend bro-hugs, possibly even consider avoiding handshakes, too? IZ is coming up with several regional events planned before that, and… should we even have those with what TV news is telling us now? I’m not sure how risky those social rituals are, but Highbinder has just reminded us that we are, at least, better off than some species… like dogs, for instance! Does it even matter?

We are doomed already anyway, aren’t we? I mean, if rising sea levels don’t drown us, then we’ll most certainly be crushed by the sky falling… Since it’s unlikely our politicians will come up with anything useful to mankind… Yeah, I’m feeling kinda vulnerable right now… I slipped up and watched a few minutes of TV news last night… I’m ardently abstaining now, but who knows, I may weaken at any time… I just wish CDC could come up with something to cure that particular malady!!!

Could my dampened enthusiasm for life be a symptom of... you know what? Should I consider self-quarantining myself? Maybe I should hide under the bed, too...? Is there any hope?

(Scratch out Terrorism and replace it with COVID-19 or whatever else it is we're supposed to be getting worked up about this month.)

(Admittedly, some common sense changes are in order, of course, but the full blown panic is a bit much IMHO.)

I have a serious question too regarding people who are stocking bottled water due to the threat of a viral pandemic. Why? What do they think is special about bottled water? Does it prevent or cure corona virus? Will a virus suddenly prevent the water from flowing out of my faucet or prevent me from boiling water, if needed, if I quarantine myself?

A couple weeks back when people started coming in the store wearing masks, buying up water and toilet paper, I thought they were freaking out for no good reason. Now, I’m starting to get a little concerned. My wife, daughter, and granddaughter are going to a concert in Phoenix this weekend. I’m starting to wonder if that’s a good idea.
To answer your question Bruce, I think there is always hope. (It does seem to be diminishing though)  Undecided

The theory is that if this get bigger the folks who run the water system can't or won't come to work, then the faucet water will stop, thus the stockpiling...

Same thing with toilet paper...

But a lot of it is just herd mentality. Someone sees someone else buying up a dozen cases of water so they figure they better do so too, then someone sees them, and on we go...

I think it's good that this panic message from the lying media has reminded us to do some of the things we should've been doing all along.  We needed to be reminded to wash and sanitize our hands more often.  We needed to be reminded to diminish the times we touch our mouths, noses and eyes.

Out of consideration I will sanitize my hands before and after and expected hand shaking event.  If one doesn't want to be hugged by me or shake my hand I'll certainly honor that wish.  It carries the same implication as was always there with a reluctance to shake hands or hug.

Viral diseases have always been out there and have been spread exactly as is COVID-19.  I will not allow the panic spread by the media to dictate unreasonable changes in my behavior.

Bruce, I dont think you need to self quarantine, you get so much fresh air I dont think any virus will stick to you even if it can catch up.
I know this thing is serious, however as I have always said, Bad news is good ratings, so the more the media can stir the pot, the more ratings they get. Its always the same, and this will be a big deal until some other disaster comes up and the news needs to exaggerate that.  Always the same with the news, if the story is dying down, raise it back up and do it dramatically so we all tune in and buy more toilet paper.

My Friend, ride on and enjoy the journey, if you come upon a fellow rider and he extends his hand, take it in good faith that he/she had enough sense that if they are sick they would not extend it.
And if you do swing our way, YOU ARE GOING TO GET A BIG HUG FROM PETRA!!!!

Enjoy the wind my friend.

If the water utility workers are unable to deliver, there is about 10000 gallons in my pool.
Toilet paper is not an issue, I have a bidet (and coffee maker Evil ).
I will go on a normal grocery shopping trip and stock up on spaghetti and canned tomatoes for pasta sauce, nothing out of the ordinary...

Yeah but how do production line workers work from home? What good does it do a factory if you are not sending everyone home?

The line workers will have their union tell them how to act.
If parts can’t be delivered due to transportation and quarantine issues, all types of production operations will soon grind to a halt...

Dengue fever kills 25,000 every year. The annual flu kills many more than COVID19 (so far) but we don’t track the spread of these diseases. It seems there might be a back story to all of this. Literally trillions can be made in the stock market. Research grants in the billions to research. HMMMM

I wonder what is going to happen when people realize that the stuff they need for everyday living is not on the shelves any longer in a few months? It will be a wake up call for some that China has supplied not only the virus but many of the goods we depend on, including electronics and cell phones.

Bruce,

I too have been torn on which path to fruition this week,

I haven't felt the best since Monday morning. On Reb's scale of medical condition readiness I was at a solid 6/10. Not feeling the best, but not ill enough to be absent from work. My own diagnoses indicated seasonal allergies, as the weather in the great state of TN has been peaking close to the 70's for a few days now.

Still, with the ongoing mass extension level event taking place among our broadcasting networks, I have been doing a lot of 2nd guessing. Should I just work from home? Should i get a test for COVID19?

The big Green company I am graciously employed by has made several changes to policies this week. A travel ban to China and Italy has moved too a complete domestic ban on air travel. No group luncheons, no work sponsored outings or extra curricular activities. At this point, I question if anyone should be at their designated work location when they can tele-work from home.  Undecided

Roger,

Sound advice, my friend! I am on a road trip; unfortunately, I don't have any plans to wander in your direction... Perhaps you could break away for the Hattiesburg gathering... and... we could demonstrate our disdain for hysteria to all others in attendance! If not, then I'll catch up with ya down the road someplace... Handshakes and bro' hugs from you cheerfully accepted!

Reb,

Just follow your conscience and good judgement, my friend... two items I've observed in abundance in your arsenal of attributes with which to face the world. Funny, seeking an approving conscience can sure cause some serious internal debates to rage in pursuit of doing the right thing... It is worth the effort though, even when we guess wrong... A well used moral compass is the sign of a worthwhile person, indeed... Good on ya!

Thought 2x if I should share it here, but here it goes:

It is lengthy and it has *gasp* some numbers, charts and simulations.

For water, I have one of this (bought 2 years ago, works flawlessly):
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00026F9F8/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The water tastes really good and is clean i.e. process removes chemicals and biohazard.

Tastes pretty good and won't spoil in 30 years.

The most important behavior and a pet peeve of mine for a long time. People need to stay the crap home if they aren’t well. We see them at church at the grocery store and other places. Sneezing coughing and looking like crap but saying they feel great it’s just allergies. That.

For water storage, I got a few of those:
https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001QC31G6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Remember the recommendation is 1 gallon/person/day and it is recommended to have at least 5 days of water available in case of natural disaster.

It capable of heating up a small bedroom for 6 hours if kept at low setting on a single small propane bottle.

The last but not the least: ammo.

After reading the article I posted above, I've ordered and received some extra ammo (45acp, 9mm and 12 gauge for the shotgun).
