I use Canary (https://canary.is/) and have so for 3 years now. I went with Canary because they don't force you to sign up for any service. Once you buy their devices, it's literally free with service options if you need them.

The Canary devices are Wireless (but can be wired via Ethernet) and can be monitored via computer or App on your phone. I use the App which has always worked great. The devices sense motion/sound and send you alerts when you are not home.

I use to different Canary Devices;
 - Canary View (https://canary.is/view/)
+ I have 3 of these monitoring exterior doors and living spaces.
 - Canary Flex (https://canary.is/flex/)
+ I have two of these. One monitoring the porch, and the other in the Garage.

Right now there is a great deal on a Canary device on Amazon (https://www.amazon.com/CAN100USBK-Security-Insurance-Discount-Eligible/dp/B00NW31YSE/ref=sr_1_4?crid=3PSBBHYUR3TFZ&dchild=1&keywords=canary+home+security&qid=1584113152&sprefix=canary%2Caps%2C189&sr=8-4). I paid $150 for mine!

Lastly, I recently subscribed to Canary's service plan ($10/mo). I did this because it offers two way talk through the devices. When solicitors ring my doorbell and can politely Evil tell them to go away. I can also yell at my dogs to get off the couch when I'm not at home  2funny.

Hope this helps.

I use Blink,, been using them for 2 years and they have no fees and are online. Big bonus is they do not require external power. Mine run for 2 years on a lithium battery
They have 2 way audio and I bought eve trough mounts so no drilling at all. Works fantastic.

2 year battery life ?   maybe if it goes off once  a week , you know , triggers  .
The more times the camera turns on , the shorter the battery life

Believe me, I am an EE so I know. But I am telling you what worked for me. Everything has variables.
If the camera is not triggered then its generally true that you don't have a situation. However I can go look at it anytime. And the software and installation is so easy anyone could do it.  Not having to run power to all the camera's was a huge plus for me. I would buy again in a heartbeat

I use the Arlo Netgear system.  I have five cameras.  There are two basic modes of operation.  One is on demand.  The other is based on motion detection.  Videos are stored free for a short period of time, (don't remember for sure).

https://www.arlo.com/en-us/products/arlo-pro/default.aspx

I have had the system installed for about three years.  I have to "spare" batteries that are charged so I can replace them as needed in the cameras.  Since the cameras only record on demand or when motion activation is turned on, the battery life is very good, two to three months generally.

The only drawback to the system is that the central station (at least mine) requires a hardwired connection to the internet.  I like this because it cannot be jammed.

You can have up to five cameras (I have five).  Cameras are very resistant to weather and I have never had an issue with weather except for the cameras lens responding to dew under certain conditions.

You can listen in to the audio from the cameras and its very good.  I have not been able to reliably test the two way audio part (I speak into the computer or phone and you hear it at the camera).

I would purchase it again.  It has worked as needed and is reliable.

Just recorded video from camera monitoring the front yard.

Same. $25 for stationary, $35 for PTZ. WiFi, only needs power (USB cable). You can weather proof housings for them.

I've got a dozen or so of them in and around my house.

Only big downside is they don't natively work on a computer, they're phones and tablets only, but there are work arounds to this too... (I keep the view of my front door and front yard up in a window on my computer at all times.)

Being you were clear you want to record locally on your own hard drive you can ignore all but one of the above suggestions!   IVMS 4500 is an app to remotely access a standalone system Hikvision is one of the largest manufacturers of video equipment that using this software.   I'm in the business and use their equipment all the time.  Dahua is another entry level brand you could use keep in mind these cameras would need to be wired.

While I am a novice when it comes to home security camera systems, I will disagree with your comments.  Arlo allows local recordings on an up to 2TB attached USB device.  The only issue is that you have to remove the USB device from the base station and connect it to a computer to view the files.

can also use sd card in wyze , record 7 days then starts over.
video, pics, time lapse, event recording, 2 way talk, detection zone, use free cloud storage if not using sd card, pretty good for 25.00 each and no monthly charge.

3 of my blink cameras are still on their original batteries.   Will be two years in April when they were installed.
The one on my driveway and inside of our garage just had their batteries replaced last month.  All cameras installed 2 years ago this April.
All have been subjected (with the exception of the one in the garage) to 20 below weather, 100 above, heavy rain and bird attacks.  They continue to run perfect.

The Wyze system also has a motion detector and door contacts that are reasonably priced that will alert the app when a door (or window) is opened. I have to disable the notices when the grand-kids are over or it would drive me nuts, even though that might be a short trip. I have added the Blink system for external cameras that are completely wireless but as yet have not set them up since I may need to reconfigure my wifi net to get coverage where I will need it.
