I've noticed in store and food businesses that people are often wearing plastic gloves. Apparently they don't understand that unless one changes gloves after every contact the gloves serve the same purpose and the skin of the hands for transmitting the disease.
It's not the touching of the hands that gives one the disease. The disease, as most, is primarily transmitted by mouth to hand to hand to mouth. There is the smaller chance that one could breathe in the droplets of another's uncovered cough or sneeze and thus the six foot separation. The virus does not leap from one to another across a gap nor is it normally transmitted through the air by breath alone.
It's disappointing that such a large percentage of the population is below average in intelligence.
I do understand the need for extreme dictates. It's because we can't trust the average American to follow required safe practices.

You are absolutely correct in your assessment. Unfortunately it's a learned habit. We have 2 types of gloves in the store. One is a cheap single use plastic glove. One a tighter vinyl glove. Almost everybody should be using the single use gloves. But many use the vinyl ones because it gives them better feel. They will keep them on till they break. It's a constant battle to teach them.

My wife is a retired RN. She says the gloves mainly keep you from picking your nose or putting a finger in your mouth or rubbing your eye. My mom was in the hospital recently. Every nurse or hospital staff that came in the room put on a pair of plastic gloves and threw them away when leaving. After discarding the gloves they used sanitizer before going out the door. My wife makes me wear them when grocery shopping.

Hey now! How do you know what precludes me from picking my nose? I guess that's true but it makes them protecting the wearer while trying to put on a show of protecting the customers.

The wearing of gloves by food workers and healthcare workers is for different reasons. In grocery stores it's 99.9% for food safety. In the healthcare field, it's primarily for controlling the transmission of germs and disease. Although now the distinction is being blurred in the stores. As Willow has noted, many think that by putting on a pair of gloves they are protected from germs now. It's maybe soothing to their mind, but it's pretty much wasted effort. Hand washing and proper sanitizing of touched surfaces is what people should be thinking of. There is still a great need for proper food safety by using the single use gloves though.

The young female at the cash register in Dollar General the other day had on rubber? plastic? and my immediate thoughts were what you posted Carl. Gittin where I'd rather not even use plastic to pay much less use cash. All we can do I guess is follow the recommended guide lines promulgated by those who are sposed to know! what's goin on. RIDE SAFE.

Of course there's still the issue of anxiety that arises in middle aged men when they see someone wearing plastic gloves. (And yes, I know that if I'm middle aged I would be expecting to live to 138.)

If wearing gloves and masks make you feel better, you should. I work retail and take cash all day long and people just don't seem too bright. I lady took a glove off while trying to take cash out of her wallet, then, because her hands were cold, licked her fingers to grip the money and proceeded to hand it to me. Or, they take their credit card out and stick it in their mouth to look for something else and then hand me the card wet side out. They don't understand why I hesitate to take it from them.

Luckily I don't have to deal with cash or cards. But I'm having a real issue with customers coming up right on top of me. It has always been an issue. I'll be filling the case and some people think they need to get within 3" of you. But now with the virus concerns, it's really pissing me off.

I have food server gloves I've had for a couple years. I have some in back of p/u when I leave home. I don't wear gloves in store, I put them on before I get back in truck, I take them off right before washing hands, truck and home stay uncontaminated. Every item that needs refrigerated is cleaned before, all else stays on porch 4 days.

I'd wear the nitriles, just to remind me not to touch myself..... (on the face). The other thing I'm working on is not leaning on or touching counters, or anything I don't have to. Maybe the folks working the supermarkets should get shirts that say... Please stay 6 feet from me.
I can hear you fine, and it's for everyone's safety

Maybe if you pulled out a dirty rag and coughed into it when anyone approached you would be helpful. At the USAF commissaries, the butchers would slice up any ham (canned, whole or part) however you wanted it, or any other work you wanted on any meat in the store, while you waited, and no charge. Since those days, I cannot remember ever asking anything from a butcher; I just buy whats out there and go my way. And rarely do any delhi buying.

Although the last 10 days we have curtailed many requests due to time constraints. (I'll try the coughing into a bloody rag)

I've started wearing gloves (glove, I need my fingers) at work, while at locations. But it's not for the "protection" they give, it's so when I wash my hands about every hour (a small bottle of soap in my cargo pants), that they don't dry up. They already are, and bleeding, and I'm on blood thinners. I've never had this problem before.
As already mentioned, it stops you from touching your face, which brings any virus up to where it can do the most harm.
I live in the new China Town, and the number of people walking around with these cloth masks over their faces, such fools. You where those when you have a virus so you don't spread it. Not to protect yourself from getting it. That takes a different type.

Yes but remember you can’t pick boogers when you’re wearing a mask.

While I understand the reasoning behind wearing the gloves, the idiots around here feel the need to discard them in the parking lots instead of the trash. Someone should also show them the proper technique on how to remove the gloves as one unit then discard.

People who litter (in general) should be made to eat it.
Take all the time you want. We throw in salt, pepper and water.

The parking lots around here make it look like a proctologist convention is in town.

that is sad they litter the gloves all around like that, you should snap a pic of their license plate or video record them on your cell phone and report them to the police giving them a littering ticket. wearing gloves does not hurt anything but I choose not to. I have a very bad habit at work to constantly like my drier fingers when shuffling papers all day long. I cannot stand those rubber finger slip ons since tried them and do not work for me shuffling papers around at my desk so just lick my one index finger out of habit been doing it since guessing 1988 or so in high school and probalby prior to that. Bad habits are very hard to break if doing it for decades now. I also have a bad habit of wiping my eyes or eyebrows with my hands and also covering my sneezes with my hands vs. my forearm. Wife nags me on that last one sneezing into my hands. NO COMMENT on if I pick my nose but I do....
