My mother (83) lives by herself. She has a land line. She had a cell phone and never used it. My sister and I talked her into giving up the phone (and she was grateful that she no longer had to worry about it).

Last night her internet/phone/cable TV provider suffered an outage. Mom panicked. She now HAS TO HAVE a cell phone (she really does not as she can make phone calls with ONSTAR in her car, which she used during the outage). But, one cannot reason with the fears of one’s 83-year-old mother, rational or not.

So, I’m looking for a cell phone with no monthly charge. One that the minutes do not expire rapidly. This will be a phone that will NEVER be used (slight exaggeration, but RARELY would be an exaggeration the other way). The point is, the phone will be used less than 30 minutes in a year.

Suggestions? Thanks in advance.

Tracfone is about $100/year.   Works for me (ya,I'm kinda a cheapskate).   I just buy the one year refill card annually.

Is your Mom thinking of becoming a terrorist, or joining the Mafia ?  Grin

Valkorado is onto something with Tracfone. Most of the carriers also have Prepaid service of some sort, but Tracfone has made it as a staple of their business. It's pretty hard to beat that minutes (or units as they used to call them) good for a year.

I've kept the same number for so many years that I actually have a significant amount of voice, texts and data stored up!  I don't ever worry about running out.

I thought there are some pre-paid phones out there that if you refill before a set time 1-3 months, not only do you add the $30 (?), but any unused $ carries over, therefore never expiring. This can be minutes or $.

Some pre-paids used to come as low as $5.

Thanks for the suggestions. Turns out I was spinning my wheels. The only acceptable phone is a Jitterbug which to my understanding can be activated only on the GreatCall network.

great call rides on Verizon - I had to get one for MIL. MIL is still mobile enough that she uses it like a normal cell phone (we got 750 minutes /month for her). That with some of their help features boosted it to $45/month, but if you're just looking for a landline backup - you can probably do it for less.
