Are you familiar with "Draw the Dog"? Today's is inspired by a story I told him of two of my past dogs, Captain and Sheldon (I can't believe this was almost 20 years ago!). I sent Cap for the dumbbell, Shel beat him to it. Cappy didn't want to fight Shel for it, nor did he want to come back without it. So, he brought Sheldon back. The link is to his version of it .... http://drawthedog.com/?p=527

That was more than 25 years ago, and back I didn't know what I do now about training. Plus, I was laughing so hard I almost fell down, and Cap always found laughter highly reinforcing. So, yeah, it was more than a cheerio. Hard to believe Captain's been gone over 25 years, and Sheldon more than 20. They're in my heart and mind like it was yesterday.

Thanks for sharing....I wasn't aware of "Draw the Dog" website. I spent a couple of hours there today....great site.
Funny how dogs stick with you... When my kids were younger we had a doberman that thought she was one of the kids. She died on Christmas eighteen years ago.... I didn't realize it was that long ago until you shared your story... my how time flies!

I still remember much about my first dog and she died when I was 12, over 40 years ago. Since that time, there have been many many dogs, and almost all are fresh in my mind. Today there are 7 dogs, ages 5 mo, 2 years, almost 2 years, 6 years, 7 years, 11 years, and 13 years. The oldest were adopted a couple of years ago, when my 18 year old Mini Schnauzer (himself adopted at age 14) was telling us he wouldn't be around much longer -- I have a real soft spot for little old dogs. Each dog brings joy, laughter, frustration, challenges and eventually sorrow into my life, along with education and examples of how to enjoy each day regardless of what it brings.
There are very few moments of it I would trade. One would be the night a few weeks ago when the puppy had projectile diarrhea! Oh, well, that's part of life.

Several years ago, my wife (Nora) and I found our proud Sharpei (Koke) sitting next to the pool with a young lifeless wild rabbit dangling from his mouth. My wife was distraught. Without going into great detail, she had just learned that her efforts earlier that day to protect the wayward rabbit from the dog were unsuccessful.
Koke shamelessly dropped the rabbit and ran in to the house as soon as he saw my wife burst in to tears. We followed him and found that he was giving himself what would best be described as a "doggie timeout". He was actually sitting in the living room with his face tucked in to a corner.
My wife's tears were immediately replaced with deep laughter. We hid our laughter and watched as Koke kept his head tight in the corner for over 5 minutes. When he finally did turn around, it was a slow look making sure the coast was clear.
Koke passed away in 2003 and we miss him tremendously. The 9 years with him have left us with some great memories.
