I am retired, well sort of. I still work , but not at my long time profession. Now days, or rather for the past six years, I have worked for our county government as a Judicial Commissioner. My wife still works full time in the hospital, as a Radiologic Technologist. Since that was my profession as well, we talk a lot about medical stuff. It is amazing that some things never change. People will always be people, no matter how the world advances in technology. I know my wife is in a high risk job at this time, well heck all the time. No matter where patients come from, if they are sick, she probably has to do an x-ray or a CT exam of them. Lung or breathing problems, car accidents, shootings, drunks, playground accidents, belly pain, spine problems, high fevers, and on and on it goes. During the past few weeks, she has worked so much overtime, that I hardly ever see her. If she was not being exposed enough, she works codes in the ER and assists them when they get over run with patients. She's just an all around hard worker and loyal to her job. If her being in medicine is not enough, I have to work with dealing with all of the extra assaults, domestic assaults, thieves, drug heads, etc. that are coming out of the woodwork since everyone is supposed to stay home. Everyone is going, "extra", nuts with all the shutdowns, stay at homes, no schools, and all. I can hardly wait for all of this to continue for another couple months or longer. When we get home and actually get to talk a little, all you can do is laugh about it all. We are just trying to make it through each day and giving thanks to God for our health and strength so far. I hope all of our members remain healthy. We will get through this. This challenge must be met with determination to overcome evil with good. Do good things, help one another, respect others. Lift up the fallen, basically, do unto to others as you would have them do unto you. We will make it through

Jimmy,
A thoughtful and timely post! Loads of good advice and encouragement for us all contained in your words, and I thank you for them! I also thank you and 'number 5' for all you do...
Folks like you always go above and beyond, you give far more than you ever take, and you matter so much more than any of us, including yourselves, could ever know! Among the many, many things for which I'm thankful, is the knowing of and about folks just like you and Stephanie... My two good friends who so well represent all that is good in us, and who give us all hope for a brighter future... Thank you!!!

I met my beautiful wife 23 years ago when on one lucky day she was assigned to work my clinic due to another nurse being absent that particular day. After each patient was seen, I would walk them over to the nurses station so their visit can be completed. I was taken aback by the way this wonderful human being spoke to each patient and how she explained after care and any instructions the patient may have needed to go get labs or x-rays, etc. I overheard her give comfort to a very old man who needed in-home nursing care to treat his foot ulcer. The man was very anxious at the thought of a stranger coming to his home. I watched her touch his arm and ease his anxiety with her kind words and soft voice. I truly believed that I had met a real life angel that day. I'm tearing up as I type this. Not only is she amazing at what she does, but she LOVES what she does. Over the last 23 years, I've watched her get ready for work in the morning and in the evenings, when she goes to her 2nd nursing job (did I say that she LOVES what she does?). In all those years, I never heard a complaint about having to go to work. Like the mail carrier slogan.... Neither rain, nor snow, nor sleet, yadda, yadda. However, these past few weeks have been very different. I can see it in her face when she comes home and when she leaves. The stress has gotten to her. She actually thought about calling in this morning, but didn't. She's not alone. There are thousands of Angels just like her. May God and all of heaven's goodness keep them safe and comforted.

Gary, Thanks for sharing that tribute to Cheryl. The worst of times often brings out the best in us, and you've given us a glimpse into just such an example. I've met your wife on a couple of occasions, and I liked her... but I only knew what I saw at the moment, with the bulk of my impression being imputed due to my respect for you. I now know so much more! Excellent write-up... THANKS! Please let her know of just how much she and her contributions, and her example, are appreciated by the rest of us!!! DDT

Amen! These are the folks we run to when we desperately need help, and now they have no refuge - - nor can they offer any. Their workplace has become a war zone.

I've only met her once, I believe. In fact, I think I gave her some of that awesome meal from Oss's place, to take home....way too much for me, and that's saying something. Very sweet.

Jimmy and Gary, thank you for those words
You both have married wonderful caring women.
Forgive me this digression but at the end of the reading of each of the 5 books of the Torah we say
hazak hazak—be strong, be strong, let us each make sure to do our share, knowing all along that we will not complete every goal, ve-nithazek, may we be strengthened in the recognition that it may not happen soon or during our time.
One thing that makes Nurses like your wives so amazing is that they work knowing the job wont necessarily be completed during their shifts but they know they can make a difference, and so they do, day after day after day. Their lives are truly blessings.

My wife is at 40 years as an RN this year. For most of those years she has worked in an Neonatal Intensive Care Unit/Infant Intensive Care Unite. She loves her work. To her it is all about making a difference in peoples lives. Many days it is about helping the parents as much as helping the fragile Infant. Most days are good days, but as in all things sometimes it just does not end the way you would choose and she is left wondering, was there one more thing.
