Grizwold stepped on this snake a few minutes ago. The snake is about three feet long. He wrapped himself around Griz’s rear leg. Griz’s Mom pulled him by the collar and the snake let go, then coiled up in striking position. Griz’s Mom is totally freaked out right now...

Anyone know what kind of snake this is?

Hmmm. Don't know about up there but down here in the South we only have one type of snake..... It's the dreaded Copper Headed Water Rattler and it's deadly!!!
I too would be freaked if that happened to Arlo....  Angry Wink

Two years ago, next to the barn, I found a shed skin, probably this guy's daddy's skin. It was 75" long - very impressive! My thought is garters don't get that big...

Yup, looks like a garter snake. I've been bit by them a few times as a kid growing up on a lake. Don't recall if I ever had to have any meds but I do remember a hot compress being wrapped around my ankle one particular time to take down some swelling. Don't think they're really  poisinous though. I do seem to remember some decent sized ones, but then again as a kid snakes are gonna look big especially if you get bit...

Color certainly does look like a garter snake.  Three feet would be quite normal.  Seventy-five inches would be too long for a garter snake.  Perhaps you have other snakes that you just don't normally see.

Round pupils....it's a rat snake. We would get both that variety and all black ones in Florida, both can excee 5'. Rita hated snakes so I always kept an eye out for them, especially when the weather started to warm up. I did kill a cotton mouth once in my neighbor's front yard. I noticed he was busy watching a young hawk diving at him so I beheaded him with a hoe, a good swing from 5' away took him out. Rat snake bites can be painful and most likely will become infected but aren't poisonous.

Hard to really tell from the picture but it does not look like it has a triangular head so its probably not poisonous.

If that is true, I just let them go and do their thing, keeping the other snakes and things under control.

A couple of days ago I was walking in the woods and saw a black snake (black racer).  My dog never noticed it.  It did not move until we were well past.  Black snakes are good.

"Venomous snakes also have a more triangular head, whereas non-venomous snakes will have a rounded jaw. The shape of the face has to do with the location of the venom sacks, so triangular= beware! If the snake has a rattle, it is venomous."

Probably a garter snake.

If he bit him, disinfect with hydrogen peroxide (several times), don't cover (unless Griz starts chewing it) and keep an eye on it.

Years ago, kids were standing and jabbering at the bottom of our fenced yard all excited.  The wife went down, leaned on the fence and asked what they were doing.  We're looking at that huge snake on the fence right next to you.  She screamed and ran in the house (I think she wet herself, and lost 5 years of life).  It was a big fat black snake, stretched out on the 4' fence cap rail, taking in the sun.

Pretty funny... but sometimes you need to be concerned and supportive (and laugh later).

lol... ya that doesn't sound right, does it. It would've  been in the early 60's so my memory likely got that wrong... cold makes more sense. Regardless, I lived and I'm more or less normal, so I guess whatever Mom wrapped it with didn't do any harm  Wink

Yep....he was just out there minding his own business and doing his job of ridding your property of big bugs, lizards, and whatever else he could find when this mammoth of a meal popped by. He went all in and wrapped himself around this "meal for a month" and was thinking he had it made.
Then Mom put a stop to it!
Oh well.....back to big bugs and lizards.

my kid brother and I had pet garter snakes when I was 12

They do like it when you wrap em around your hand, but they will open their mouth pretty wide to bite you if you squeeze em

Wonder how I know that  Cool  The ones we had were more green stripe but head is same

Garter snake...no worries.  They make good pets as they eat goldfish, crickets, and worms.  I’ve had quite a few growing up.  Harmless to humans other than they can carry salmonella.  Never had any health issues from handling but I always kept the aquarium very clean.

A story I heard years ago.  A young kid was bass fishing and doing quite well. Another fisherman watched him reel in bass after bass.  Finally asked the kid what he was using for bait .
Stinger worms as he reeled in another. The fisherman looked in his bait bucked and it was crawling with baby rattle snakes. The kid was immune to the bites.
