The Kawasaki KLR650 was introduced to the dual-sport adventure motorcycle world in 1987 as a replacement for the KLR600. Since the beginning, the KLR650 was fitted with a counter balanced single cylinder engine that remained unchanged until it's demise in 2018. In 2008, Kawasaki listened to consumers and upgraded the KLR with stronger forks, a D-section swing arm, dual headlights, updated brakes, and a refined cooling system. The KLR650 remains loved by urban commuters, cross-country adventure riders, and even the U.S. military for it's low cost of entry and high reliability factor. In this video, we take a closer look at how everybody's favorite adventure motorcycle came to be and what finally led to it's downfall.

I had one that I traded my 84 GoldWing for in 1988 even up. I hated that GoldWing. I kept the KLR 7 years and 45,000 miles. Still miss it.

I would love to have one of the military versions with the diesel engine.

Had 2 of them over the years. I liked them for rock roads and mud which we seem to have plenty of in SW Fl. They are terrible in sugar sand though. With that enormous fuel tank up top they just seem to plow through corners instead of cutting them. I can't remember having problems with either bike though.
