Hey folks,
I need to put a trunk on my '97 GL 1500.  The Interstate trunk would be great but I'm not sure if the standard trunk brackets will fit the GL.  There are a lot of 99' - '01 Interstate trunks available.   Does anyone have experience mounting the Interstate trunk, or any other trunk to the GL?

Thanks,
Gene

Change the fender rails to those from an Interstate and the trunk mounting brackets will fit right up.

If you want the trunk lights to work you'll need the I/S trunk wiring harness, then do a bit of creative splicing into the bike's tail/brakelight circuits. I built a Y adapter for mine, using the proper Japanese connectors.

Do you have saddlebags?  If so how do the open?  Mine would not clear the truck with the current hinges.

I have two Givi trunks, a smaller one and a bigger one. High quality, uglier than sin
and they are only on the bike when I go on longer trips. And, they fit on either bike
whichever is needed... and they come off like suitcases for when you get to the motel...

No trunk most of the time is way better for me  Smiley ...

I have an Interstate (which donated the trunk) and a Tourer (which received it). What I ended up doing was to swap the lids, hinges/retainers and other hardware straight across. If I have or can find extra I/S parts (retainers, bumpers, cords, etc) I may end up swapping the Tourer style hardware that's currently on my I/S for what it came with - just in case I want to put another trunk on the bike.

You’ll need to swap the hinges, the I/S bag lids slide forward and outward, to remove. The retaining wires hold the lid to the outside. Locks are the same, mounting is the same too.
