Dear friends

As I'm doing my journey of studies on firearms and decided to pick up a revolver (a S&W 686 Plus Pro series, http://www.valkyrieforum.com/bbs/index.php/topic,110836.0.html) a deal came up that I couldn't really pass.

Recently added to the family, a Ruger Super Redhawk 44 magnum. Made in 1999/2000, less than 50 shots down the pipe, with box/papers/etc.

The previous owner even included the scope and 3 speed loaders in the package!

I guess my handgun needs are completely fulfilled. Now comes the long guns part of this journey...

That one can be used for hunting!
Down here in the Southeast that would be excellent for deer. Shots are almost always in heavily wooded areas and are 50yds or less most of the time.

What pushed me towards the Ruger instead of the S&W 629 was that the first can handle *any* hot loads like buffalo bore (https://www.buffalobore.com/index.php?l=product_detail&p=54) which apparently are too hot for a S&W.

Quote: "We get hundreds of emails asking if this load can be fired in S&W revolvers or some firearm other than what is in the above list. The answer is NO. ".

cooldude  You remind me of me.   Grin

You really don't need those Buffalo Bore rounds to experience .44 Mag shooting.  Just any decent 240gr JHP ammo will do the trick.

If the wife or daughter ever do want to try shooting, do not hand them that thing.

@Pappy: that is the idea, I was planning to do a hunters course and get a hunter license before this whole plague started.

@Jess: I know that the Buffalo Bore is extreme, but it is nice to have a revolver that can handle any load just fine!

I would love to have my family visiting the range with me, but as I mentioned in the past, my wife is strongly opposed to *any* guns and my daughter is the same.
*sigh*

@John: it is dual purpose: if you run out of ammo, you can use it as a crowbar!

@all: the reasons my wife + daughter oppose guns are the same talking points of 'guns kill people', 'why you need a gun?', 'waste of money', 'cant use it against a thief', etc.

They fail to see that as a *basic* constitutional right, something that is core to American values just like freedom of speech/religion, democracy, privacy, private property and the rule of the law.

@Jess: I know that the Buffalo Bore is extreme, but it is nice to have a revolver that can handle any load just fine!

Yes, probably any factory load.  But not any load.

Years ago, I got a good Dillon progressive press and started reloading (RL550B).  I got a half dozen reloading manuals, powder, bullets, primers and brass, and began loading pistol calibers.  I determined that I would only ever use good (top) quality factory ammunition for self defense, so I only ever loaded what you would call range fodder.  What I loaded was never weak or under-powered, but just good conservative target loads.

Despite my best efforts and diligent attention to detail, a few of my .44 magnum loads ended up with double charges of powder.  So blam, blam, blam, BLAM.  What the hell was that????

I'm glad I was not loading the high end of .44 mag rounds, and I'm glad I was shooting my Redhawk (double charge, and no damage whatsoever.... although there was a little sweating on my part).  Double charging a load already right at the edge of SAAMI standards would likely blow up a Redhawk or Super Redhawk (or anything else) (and maybe your hands and face).

Reloading did not catch on with me.  It's rather boring and repetitive and tedious, and there's no smoking or drinking (or daydreaming) allowed.  And I can afford to buy all the different kinds of ammo I want (and it's almost never double charged).  crazy2

However, should gun and freedom haters ever try to deprive me of ammo (or tax it to death), I can easily go back to rolling my own, all pistol of any kind, and all rifle calibers I own, I can load for.  (not shotgun)  I have enough good brass to keep me working for a long time.

he would have made it LONG time as an old west gunslinger challenging him to a duel would be deadly for anyone standing up to him.    I would be lucky to get 2 shots off to his 6, maybe just only 1?

I tried ONLY ONCE firing my mossberg 500 pump auto as fast as I could with 12 gauge slugs repeated fire.  NOT that fast and accurate that is for sure.  My armpit/shoulder hurt after as well getting a bruise...   uglystupid2

I reload as well. I have seen several reloading manuals that state in 44mag charts "for Rugers only". I have a Super Blackhawk three screw in 44 mag. I also have a Ruger GP100 .357 mag. Years ago my father was loading some 38 special loads for his S&W 38 airweight snubby when he inadvertently double charged one. Good thing I went to the range with him the day he tried them out. I had the GP100 with me when he suggested I try some of those 38s through it. Loaded five. Pop,pop,BOOM. The Ruger shrugged it off. Dad's airweight would have been in pieces not to mention probably hurt dad's hand. We had to use a mallet to get the empty out of the cylinder but it didn't hurt it.

44 mag does not really lend itself to speed shooting, yet Jerry made it look easy.

I have a .44 1st Model Colts Dragoon black powder pistol (Italian replica).   55 grains of FFFG in each load.

I just had to fan it holding down the trigger.

At about the same weight as a light rifle, the kick isn't too bad.

It screwed up the timing pretty good.

I didn't hit anything, but the flames were impressive, and I made enough smoke to infiltrate a company of infantry.  Grin

I bet you did  2funny

When I wanted to see if the 44 had engine stopping abilities I shot a few shots pretty much point blank range into a cast iron cylinder head I had laying around. I can say this, unless a 44 goes into something with less bulk like the radiator, carb, fuel lines etc, you are not stopping a car with this.

(As you know) shooting into an engine block (or anything like it) from close range is risky.

I once had a .45 ACP come blowing past my ear, from an outdoor hillside, and not at close range.  Just that one time in a lifetime of shooting, but it was pretty disconcerting.  I quit for the day.

When I want to stop a car, I use the brakes.  But if I wasn't in it, I'd shoot for the driver (not the engine block).
