Used a combination of paper bags from the store and a few boxes to cover the tomato plants in the garden in front of my house (faces east)
Snow and 30 overnight and really windy now Feels like January not May !
Has a 50% loss of the plants on east side of house including all the Brandywine heirloom tomatoes
Good thing I still have a dozen tomato plants indoors mostly Roma and Cherry
The snap peas, arugula, lettuce, onions, beets, chard, broccoli, kale and spinach seem to like the snow. Did not check on the potatoes on the south side of the house yet
Farmer's almanac says mother's day is last frost day so old timers are correct this year

Yeah, the weatherman up here in the tundra(Green Bay) was telling us there was a good chance of some flurries. Got up about 0830 and nothing on the ground, I know it didn't melt cuz temps were in the lower 30's. North of us apparently a different story. Now that my cancer treatment(why do they call it a treat?) is through I'm doing some house shopping back down in Florida. This past winter was mild for this area but my age and having lived in Florida for 53 yrs. still made it rough for me. My current digs are a very nice townhouse style apt. with attached 2 car garage....but that doesn't make up for the cold. And the wind....it never seems to quit blowing. Told my daughter why the weather is so much nicer down south, it's because it sucks so bad up here the suction pulls the bad stuff away from below the Mason-Dixon line. She tells me I need to get past the weather issue and simply accept it. Told her I am getting past it, about 1400 miles south past it.

Tomato's ! Mine don't like it up here either. I start them in Florida, heirlooms. Brandy Wine is one thats hard to beat. They're still in the hot box with the heater running. They shake their fists at me every time they see me.
Get past the weather and accept it ? Nope, can't do it. I understand. I think in a couple yrs I'll be in Pinellas county full time, JoAnn says differently though. She still likes NYS.
Treatment a treat ! Never thought of it that way. Not going to either. Its a bitch and I ain't doing it again. Good luck to you.

Hey your snow birds, we are having a great heat wave, about 20 degrees above normal, bright sunny skies. Went for 160 mile smell the roses ride yesterday. Actually had to remove all the layers because of the warm sunny weather.
BUT tomorrow evening it will end and we'll be below normal temps with moisture for next 5 days. RATS.

I hear yah OSS feel your pain. Although only 2 tomato plants, we lost both and possible the cucumber plant as well were about 8 inches high already and going good until the 27 degree low temps hit us and we covered them with cardboard boxes but also should have put a towel as well over the box? Not sure it would have done any good was 27 degrees out from say 10 p.m. to near 7 a.m. this morning darn it. I think the wife's lettuce going REALLY good in a huge container got toast as well also covered them with a plastic trash barrel 32 gallon lid with NO luck. 32 degrees is iffy but was a very hard frost on the ground and cars this morning at 6 a.m. still when woke up being 27 degrees - WOW! Warmed up quickly into the 40s by 9 a.m. but too little, too late.

I left Il as I've stated a time or three back in 78. And I was up at my Brother and S I L place-Northern Illinois-before Christmas and after New Year this year and even visited John near the frozen tundra. And every frikkin winter I do go to visit Bro and S I L I'm reminded WHY I left in the first danged place. I mean sides taxes that is. Those cursed winters there Are Brutal. Special when yer 75 and Arthur talks a Lot. Went to Church up there one Sunday and the car temp gage was showing 11 degree F and then on that read out-car sez wanna splain what the f we doin up here? Got cold last night and this mornin BUT next week every durned day sposed to rain. It are what it are. Don't like the weather stick around a bit it Will change. RIDE SAFE.

In florida? HOw does that happen? we be out today to buy a few more tomatoe plants I guess? NOT like we can plant them today anyways 30 mph winds and 40 degrees out feels like 32 or so and too fricking windy. WI and upper midwest is like a box of chocolates, never know what you going to get from day to day some days (most winter days as well) just hole up and hunker down inside. I do agree the older we get the harder it is to take the cold. My Dad always said that in his late 60s and early 70s and even now me only age 50 can see what he meant. Never understood that 10+ years ago until recently. The coldest I have ever nor will EVER experience cold being so brutal was in Devils Lake ND ice fishing a HORRIBLE 3-4 day cold front that moved in on us ice fishing in the middle of nowhere no idea where my brother and I were going some 10+ years ago was about -10 below zero with 30 mph sustained winds felt like -30 below or so and my eye lashes were freezing shut sitting in a pop up ice shack freezing our butts off attempting to catch perch and walleye hugged to the bottom could see them on the flasher unit but they all had LOCKJAW except the few who did bite but not much to show for it. All the locals said should have been here last week were biting like crazy - heard that all my life.

Hey Cookie, I've seen it snow a number of times in central Fla. in the 53 years I lived there. Obviously nothing heavy and it didn't stick....but it did snow. I took some pics of it a few years ago and sent to my parents, dad never believed me when I told him it does snow once in a great while. In my time there I've seen temps in the teens a few times, not unusual for a period of temps in the 20's. About 37-38 years ago we had two winters with subzero temps, killed off my citrus trees and did major damage to the citrus industry.

I dug up the tomatoes that were not dead and brought them inside.
3 cherry tomatoes survived but they only have top leaves altho 2' high
4 Roma (San Marzano) are looking kinds sickly
Planted some more onions and arugula today, going to wait till Thurs to plant the tomatoes as supposed to still have 3 more days with temps in 30s before winter gives up its hold.
Today is sunny and 54 a nice mother's day to take mom to visit her great granddaughter and stop by my dad's grave so she could pay her respects on the way home. The cemetery was tough for me this year, must be getting soft in my old age

oops, never saw Florida snow, but I guess mother nature can be cruel even down there.
speaking of snow, was around upper 30's today and windy. I looked outside twice and was coming down heavy white snowflakes, but nothing stuck, but could not believe it here it is MAY already.
Just took one last peek at was once was the 2 nice and healthy tomato plants and cucumber plant and are toast. We also bought a nice grape vine was doing very well but never covered it up and is toast as well was close to the house but at 27 degrees from 10 p.m. thru after 6 a.m. being that cold was brutal on them. Hey OSS, NY must be like WI (except today was not sunny but snowy/cold/windy yet again) next few nights around 32 degrees so not doing a darn thing with anything until next weekend. I should learn my lesson trying to get a JUMP on the garden in April in WI, never works out always do 2nd weekend of May. The pea plants were up also about 2 cm thru the dirt they might make it were not green leaves that next morning sort of brown but might pull thru too early to tell. This was the first year the peas came up very nicely and my guess is the rabbits will be at them soon as well.

Its supposed to freeze here until thursday. I try to wait until ground temp is at least 55º before planting, then watch the long range forecast. But, how often is that right. If the top leaves are still healthy the plant could still survive. About a week before planting I pinch off all the lower leaves/branches and then when I plant them they get buried so just the top leaves are sticking out. Planting them kinda horizontal will still allow roots to grow along the stem and take advantage of the warmer ground. In a week the plants will growing straight and tall. Mine are in 3' cages and will get 4' around and 6' tall.

They had a frost warning out for Sunday morning here in SC. I brought some hay back from the barn after I fed the horses on Saturday evening and piled it around and over the three tomato plants. I don't know if it did anything, but the plants are still happy, even their little flowers...
