If from this moment , could you survive for thirty days. You have no outside influence. No deliveries or help from anyone. You are confined to your property and own resources. You have what ever food and supplies in your possession right now. You will have the utilities (for now) working , but again , NO outside contact. Can you make your food supply last to feed your family. Can you use your property to help you survive. There is no garbage pick-up.
  THINK AND PLAN.

Yup, sure. But, we've been home for a whole week and I'm bored as heck. 3 more weeks of this boredom will kill me.

Off topic, but, it continues to surprise me [ and i didn't think I could be surprised anymore] how people are reacting to this situation. We haven't really changed what we do and the same group kept doing everything together. But, there are some we know which surprised me in how they react to this. They are scared to death over this.

Not without a trip to the ABC store first.

Suddenly a bottle of bourbon isn't lasting as long as it used to.  Roll Eyes

Oh yeah.  Even without utils.  It would not be Disneyland.  We have plenty food -- fresh, frozen, canned, freeze dried.  I've also got food making machines -- fishing poles and rifles.  Oh, yeah, just one small rifle since I lost my entire collection in a boating accident some years back.  But I digress...

In winter, I make sure firewood aplenty is laid away.

Lots of other "stuff".   Wink  Generators of gas and solar variety, etc.  Water filtration of small and large production capabilities, some first aid.  Bug out ability but need to go back through and setup my backpack again.  12v burners and mini ovens.  Food dehydrator.  On and on...  Solar and parabolic fire starters, magnesium.

Ya, I don't put my faith in gov'ment.

I'm always good for 30-60 days, although the usual supply is a bit lower these days than normal.

Even though I don't need to, I have also been conserving most everything food-wise.  Eating more of the I'm-not-crazy-about-this-stuff-but-it's-OK, and less of the favorite or easy stuff.  And, I'm just eating less than normal, not that my waist shows any change whatsoever.  My series 60 ballast waist stays the same no matter what I do (and I don't care one bit).

Haven't had any alcohol for a year or so (or much at all in 10 years), just not really interested.  I love my tobacco though.

What I am doing again, and something I did my whole life, is reading books.  I have a very decent library as I have kept every book I ever liked reading since college.  And it's been long enough that most of them are like reading for the first time.  Since retirement, my reading dropped way off, and I can't really say why other than attention deficit disorder.  So I have pulled out my favorite books and authors and series, and am greatly enjoying the stories again, often until the sun comes up when I realize I'm tired and need some sleep.  And, as I noted in my youth, reading is like mind vitamins, which can't hurt old fokers at all.

Simple pleasures for simple minds.

You know lots of bookstores (and libraries) have these really cheapo book sale tables where you can stock up on a pile for small money.

Though the selection is often very sucky.  See Spot Dick Jane.    Grin

Yes, but I believe the problem for most of us that are ready and able to self sustain on our property or anywhere else for that matter will be that many others will be needing help to do so.
Few people have the wherewithal to survive on there own and they will panic. They will be looking for those that can help them to survive.
The help and or guidance they choose at that time will be what matters most on how they will or will not survive.
So having provisions to sustain oneself will not be as important as having the ability to provide.

I feel that if it were my wife and I only we could last 6 months if our utilities were still working (natural gas and water) My issue is I have 4 kids and 10 grand kids. Two of my kids are prepared, 2 are not. I would not turn down family if the crap hit the fan.  So we keep stocking up.
HOPE we never need to go there though.

YUP. Meds would be my main concern. Little thin on magazines though. Not THAT thin. Might could use couple more cans of coffee but other than that-yeah. RIDE SAFE.

This is just a curiosity. I did it once years ago. I still worked , but did nothing to contribute to the home.  With a few basic essentials , existence is very likely with a little planning.
When you clean onions , celery , garlic or peal potatoes , save the scraps in a bag in the freezer while you can. Scraps simmered in a pot of water is a broth base. Strain out the solids , and use the broth for pasta or beans. After cooking either , save the water again and make soup. Use the scraps for compost.  Keep milk jugs for future use.  These are just a few.

If you had asked me 30 days ago I would have said no problem. After having just spent the last month on limited trips to the food market and having limited mobility due to breaking an ankle, the casa is now running low on supplies. You Scotch fellows are out of luck here, but plenty of the "American Scotch", a.k.a. Bourbon and a wee bit of the Jamison on hand. I could probably stretch another 30 days out of what is on hand but I would rather not.

wow 6 month supply on hand for food on your own land and in your house even if just 2 people that is awesome and think would be hard to do for a full 6 months.  Wife and myself could do 90-120 days tops since have a full sized freezer full of food in the basement and can survive 3 months or so of no milk is about all that spoils in the fridge after a few weeks when expiration date runs out.  Water is o.k. I guess?    We have not been grocery shopping nearly as much as we normally do use to be every weekend or two now is once every 3-4 weeks, but if we had to,  we can live without certain things for 3-4 months and survive no problems.  We may get sick of the same old food in the freezer like for me chicken strips and french fries having 3-5 of each bag downstairs in freezer, but I will not starve.  Probably should starve a little might do me some good?    angel

What is in the freezer and can goods probably could.  Wouldn't be happy, but could.  would run out of fresh fruits pretty quick.

The original statement said "confined to property", so for most of us that would limit hunting/fishing quite a bit.  Though the occasional "town deer" could help out on meat supply.  Not sure the neighbors would like one being shot that close to their homes.   2funny

Well many of us could do that but I think he was speaking of what you have on hand if you were locked down and not able to leave the Casa.

unlike me owning only a city lot 100x110 feet is all,  if CASA means your own land and some own woods to hunt or on a lake to fish, etc.,  that 30 days could be extended to 90-120 days very easily.   I do see the occasional goose or duck or sandhill crane in the farmers field behind my house but that is NOT my CASA, but very close to it some 30-50 yards away or so.  I can live without fresh fruit and milk/eggs for 90-120 days.  If I did not have that freezer mostly full in the basement,  doubt much more than 30-45 days though.    I do not know how so many I know not having an additional freezer to store stuff in survives.  I looked once in my ex-neighbors fridge/freezer and NOT much in there at all no other freezer, etc,   but I know they ate out 2-3 times every week unlike us once a month tops.  I doubt many restaurants or much of any businesses would survive if everyone was like me - a hermit crab, well almost....   Grin

We live right (literally, right) by National Forest access with two neighborhood access only combination locked gates...

I'm saving my pennies for an ATV, but I have my beat up old Ford Ranger.  And legs.  I could vamoose pretty rapidly and live for awhile if necessary in the summertime -- in winter, that would be a problem.   Sad
