Knowing the kick a 12 ga. shotgun has I'm not sure I'd want to experience it with a handgun. What would a person use it for....total destruction?

Black powder muzzle-loading smoke-pole.   Interesting, but no thanks.

The cool thing about a black powder muzzle loader is you can load it with all kinds of things.

Rocks, gravel, rock salt, glass, small sharp tacks, bits of chain, hot chili/jalepeno powder.

And then I thought, hey..... red ants behind a light charge.  Some would probably perish, but the survivors would be highly motivated.  Exactly how you collect and load red ants would be fun all by itself.

No but I bought a Judge that will fire a 410 or a 45.  I fired two 410 shells through it and my wrist hurt for weeks, I would think a 12 gauge might do permanent damage.  I gave the Judge to our son for Christmas that year.  Wink

Yes i have fired one. Not as bad as you would think.  Not enough barrel to build pressure so the recoil is reduced. Id put it between a 357 and 44 mag. Does put off some nice flame at the end of the barrel from all the unburnt powder. Shoots best with lite loads.

If is like a 44 magnum, seems pretty manageable!

But then again, it is the kind of stuff you got shoot to really appreciate it.

The gun looks slick, but my guess it is probably illegal in California (i.e. no short barreled shotguns for us here in the Golden State).

*Wait* it says 'California legal' in the website. Damn... why I had to notice...?

Over the years I have owned and shot several different 12 and 20 and 410 gauge pistols, pumps, semi auto, double and single barrel with field loads. Sure there is signifanct recoil. But nothing that cannot be handled. If you do not grasp them firmly they can hurt you.

Most need 2 hands on the firearm except the 410 and with 3 inch it can smart some.

They are all fun to shoot and definitely require practice to use effectively.

Many years ago I had the chance to fire a cut down double barrel shot gun that was as short barreled With a butt stock. About the same size as the pistol. The first mistake I almost made was, and was corrected, was hand hold under the barrel by the furniture. Off hand HAD to be on top. Thankfully I only lit off one barrel at a time. Rocked me back on to one foot. I declined a second reload.

I cut one down in shop class when I was in high school.  Hey it was the 60's in a small farm town-what can I say.  Pistol grip and an overall length of about 12 inches.  It was a great rat gun down at the town dump.  My Mother gave it to one of the local LEOs when I was away at college.  I found out later that he kept it.

The house gun is an old double sawed off to the forearm. I've never yanked on both triggers but it shouldn't be too bad, its only 16ga.  Grin
A 12ga flare gun in the door pocket of the truck. Pulling the trigger and watching a flare go into the vehicle next to you would certainly get everyones attention. I think that would defuse most situations.

I would never admit that on a public forum. Is the barrel 16" if not its a class 3 weapon and needs a class 3 permit.

I have to agree.

But actually, for shotguns, it's 18"

16" is rifles.

Unless there is some "other firearm" exception like the birdshead stock Shockwave (or some such).  But note that to get those exceptions, you have to buy it new made that way.  Taking any shotgun and cutting it down (whether to copy another lawful style or otherwise) is an unlawful act.   And possession.

Under the National Firearms Act (NFA), it is illegal for a private citizen to possess a sawed-off modern smokeless powder shotgun (a shotgun with a barrel length shorter than 18 inches (46 cm) or a minimum overall length of the weapon, total, including the 18-inch minimum barrel, of under 26 inches (66 cm))

Possessing an unregistered silencer, short barreled rifle, short barreled shotgun, destructive device or a sawed-off shotgun is punishable by a fine of up to $10,000 and/or 10 years in prison.

Unless you hold a SBS(shotgun) or SBR(rifle) with appropriate tax stamp and paperwork for that firearm (ie, registered with BATF).

Is a long forearm. Isn't 18.5" legal ?

As above stated, 18" barrel shotgun (or total length, with 18" barrel, of 26") is the shortest barrel allowed, without a federal permit for a short barrel shotgun (SBS).

As far as I know, ALL available riot (short barrel) shotguns from ANY manufacturer are made with 18 1/2" barrels, and that extra half inch is just to make sure there is never any trouble with BATF.

If just one factory 18" barrel ever came off a production line one stinking millimeter under 18", there could be big trouble and a loss of license to produce ANY firearms.

Lots of rifles come with 16" barrels, but no shotguns (I know of) come with 18" barrels.

EDIT:  And Patrick, it is perfectly lawful to saw a shotgun barrel off to not less than 18" (but 18 1/4" would be a better idea).

Not being a waterfowler, hunter or trap and skeet man, I have no use for long barrel shotguns.

Shockwaves and the like are firearms not shotguns and typically have 14 inch barrels and are 26 inches overall. And are legal to buy sell with just a standard 4473 form.

BUT do not change the configuration without due consideration as it is easy to change something that would make it illegal.

As I recall black powder seems burn a smidge slower than modern rifle powder so the recoil should less--I built a Hawken .54 caliber rifle and some cap and ball pistols and as best as I remember they were pretty mild.....BUT    REMEMBER  IF  you loaded your black powder revolver awhile back and didn't shoot it and you go to the range and even  with a fresh cap it won't fire YOU HAVE TO PUT IT IN A BUCKET OF WATER FOR AN HOUR OR SO...cocking the pistol to a new round and having a "hang fire" on the first round will lead to an exploding pistol and injury uglystupid2 Shocked Sad
