DOn't know if anyone else was following this today, but  ... the weather at FL launch site looked a bit dicey.

Yep, took time out of my not so busy day to observe the launch.

Won't lie about it, I was disappointed.   But, I'd rather them be safe than sorry.

Works out better for me anyway, I have even less planned to do Saturday.  Wink

Yes, we were watching it live as well.

It was interesting that I could find it on Fox but not OAN (well that was at 1600) or any of the network stations on OTA TV.

So, I found that all four networks. Bloomberg, and PBS had it in Youtube.

I found it interesting that the controls (or at least what we were told while watching of Fox News) in the capsule were all done via a touch screen.

If fact seeing the inside the capsule video feeds showed the two astronauts siting there almost twiddling their fingers with not much in front of them but the screen.  No buttons, switches, just the place where the screen was.  But the image was a side shot of the two astronauts.

It's mostly touchscreen, with a few physical buttons/toggles under the main touchscreens.

And although they can override, the Dragon module is designed to fly totally autonomously, the astronauts are basically there for the ride. (Assuming everything goes well..... They CAN take over and fly manually if necessary, but the module was based on a cargo module that's flown to the ISS with no humans on board many times.)

Ditto on the safety aspect. I'd rather this first manned flight be successful ( or at least the capsule escape system works as designed).

Serk,

I had forgotten that tidbit of information.  Wonder how it feels to be "cargo"   Smiley

Wonder if the Soyuz capsule was outfitted the same, as far as automation.  Not sure how I'd feel about flying into space in a Russian automated capsule.

I do miss the space shuttle.  And yes, it was automated to a large degree I suspect, it was still something you could fly.  Well yes it did glide like a rock but...

I know, not the same subject exactly but I was lucky.  My boat (Patrick Henry) was in Port Canaveral during one of the Apollo launches and I got to see if from the top of the crane next to where the boat was docked.

Many years later a friend and I went down to watch a Space Shuttle Launch.  Drove down, slept in my pickup truck for a few hours, headed to the viewing area, saw the launch and drove back.  But I was younger then.

I know I had pictures somewhere (well slides) but I must not have had them digitized with the others.  Also got to watch my boats Polaris A-3 launch.

Not much detail but its there.

Watching it live now on Youtube.

It has got to be difficult sitting there for what more than an hour with basically nothing to do.

Of course the wait is worth it.

I have not watched a launch live in many years.

However, this is the first time I have heard than speak of the climb into orbit as going uphill.  I guess its a good metaphor.

I guess when you are returning from orbit, its going downhill.

Of course I still love you is the name of the drone ship that it landed on.....

The first, now retired drone ship was named "Just Read the Instructions"

WOW!!! That was great. What a sleek new design, very impressive. Hope all goes well this mission and we can once again keep moving forward with space exploration...the final frontier.

I have to say I miss seeing the Space Shuttle, I really thought that was going to be the beginning of space flight. That’s the part I’m intrigued with, space flight. New designs, actually flying in space not just launch into orbit and dock to the ISS and return to Earth. I guess not in my lifetime though but I’ll be happy when we get back to the moon.

It seems like we’re decades away from a ship that can fly from Earth and go to the moon, land, do work and return as a unit, that’s where I envisioned the Space Shuttle program leading. The rocket booster landing is really cool and very impressive though.

Congratulations to Elon Musk, SPACEX, NASA and all those involved. The USA is back in the space game.

Too bad they lost the video feed for the stage 1 landing - would have been the icing on the cake.

Sounds like the space race is back on between the USA and Russia.

https://news.yahoo.com/moscow-bemused-us-space-hysteria-musk-taunts-russia-160514223.html

Musk appears to have thrown down the gauntlet and The President’s speech at NASA yesterday (which was one of his best IMO) shows the intent on getting back into being active in space after a long time.

Creativity, ingenuity, determination, the curiosity of “what’s out there” along with guts and glory will help push us further and further.
