DDT and I are on the road getting some much needed air and enjoyable distraction from all the “stuff” going on.  As usual, just dodging rain and seeing the country.

Today we got up early and motored out of Macon ahead of the sun with the hope of covering some ground before the mercury climbed too high in the glass.  No rain was to be encountered this day.  We had headed west and then turned north towards Iowa.

Then, heading north on 65, he flipped the bird at me!  Now I know I have been interrupting his deep thoughts and intruding on his solitude,....and also I have been interfering in his solitary decisions of direction and timing.   I have been so bold as to have made suggestions on departure times and direction of travel.  But I was trying to be congenial and non offensive.  That should count for something!  Right?

But, there it was!  I saw the crow swoop in from the right and fly right into ALI.  It then flipped up over DDTs head and nose dived into the pavement right in front and just a smidgeon to the right of me.  I had to have a talk with DDT about flipping me the bird.  Turns out he is deadly to more than just bugs.

I guess it was a day for wildlife encounters and sightings.  We rode past a doe that was down in a deep ravine beside the road and there was a fawn under the doe doing what those young things do.

That’s all for today folks!  Just one more story of life and death on the road.

Jerry,

Yep, that crow was definitely not observing proper 'social distancing'! I don't think he'll make that mistake again!!! It did bounce off my helmet, but no bother to this rider... can't say the same for the bird, though...

Dennis,

By now I've killed or wounded just about every kind of critter to be found on our roadways, and I've had a close-call with the rest... It is indeed dangerous to be out there, but... some of us just have to roll the dice... Sorry we missed seeing you this time through... perhaps the next time...

been driving cycles, etc. for 30 years give or take.  I have hit sparrows and other small animals down low but last summer me and kid on his cycle I hit a big red winged blackbird dead center on valk windshield first time ever.  It was windy in country and doing smidge above 60 mph so guess that bird hit a downdraft not getting up and over.  Left a blood mark on top of windshield and landed just to the side of my kids cycle behind me in the gravel alongside him.  I thought for sure it was going to land in the road but bird was flying towards ditch and wind pushing it blew it 20 feet over my windshield after hitting and blew it while in the air into the gravel alongside him.

good thing my windshield is bulletproof or more like birdproof.

Reminds me of my youth, tooling down a country road in Iowa when suddenly a pheasant rose up from the ditch to my right crossed directly in front of me. Those birds tend to take off like a heavily loaded plane, flying low and more horizontal until they get up some speed. This one hit the center of my homemade w/s, snapping it off clean like a hot knife through butter. I ducked to the right and the shield clipped my left shoulder. I looked in the mirror and saw the bird just casually walking toward the ditch on the other side. If it hadn't been for the w/s I would have caught it dead in my chest, not a pleasant thought moving at 60mph.

Rob,
It is great to be out and about.  The heat has been bothering us some but we are about past that now.

Bruce did make a funny little gesture after he flipped that bird off his helmet.....actually it flipped up in the
air from his helmet without any farther help from him.
