Until about a week ago I haven’t heard of this and neither has the Mrs. Never, never, ever, ever not a peep or any type of reference that we could even think of. Now I hear it’s a holiday in many states and has been and there’s a push to make it a Federal Holiday.

Now that I know what this Juneteenth is suppose to commemorate I can understand the importance of this but who is this going to be a National Holiday for really.

We have many national holidays which basically come and go every year from Presidents Day and Veterans Day to MLK Day without fanfare with the exception of TV commercials for automobile and cheap furniture sales.

As a federal holiday will this be another holiday added to the list of days off for only government workers (local, state, federal. Teachers, sanitation, township employees and so on) post office and banks?

I can’t see too many businesses closing for the day like Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Christmas, New Year and Thanksgiving.

The reason you've  never heard of it is for years it was a holiday and big deal for Texas blacks only.  After the civil war Union general I think his name was Gordon Granger landed In Galveston, Texas and proclaimed that all slaves had been freed back In 1863 and black folk In Texas had no idea and this day was June 19th.  For some reason  now all black folk across America want In on this holiday but it was only for Texas blacks originally.  That's the story I have been told for years

I've always been aware of it, but then again born and raised here in Texas.

I have no problem making it a federal holiday, but the problem comes with what will it cost us? Maybe not in official terms, but in practical terms?

When they forced MLK day as a holiday that in practical terms cost us Washington's Birthday/President's day.

We gonna hafta give up Independence Day, since it's only ~2 weeks away from Juneteenth?

THAT I would have a problem with...

Since they're so close to each other on the calendar, most places, at least most places I've worked, my friends worked at, family, etc stopped giving President's Day off as a company holiday when they started giving MLK day off (If they did.)

We used to get Washington's AND Lincoln's birthdays off. Now just Presidents Day when they added MLK.

We lost President's day where I worked about '04. Since we were a 7 day a week operation, the only people off were the ones scheduled for that day. They were paid 40 hours and 8 for the holiday like the rest of us. I don't recall anyone requesting it off as a holiday. The story we got was the union accepted the new holiday without realizing or explaining it would be in place of President's day.

Hadn't heard of that. My entire career has been paid for President's Day an none for MLK Day.

"Holidays" are dependent upon where you live.

I can't recall why the President's birthdays were combined here in NY, but it wasn't because of MLK Day.

When MLK Day became a "holiday", I was working in a hospital in the southern Bronx and the staff was given a choice of Columbus Day off or MLK Day off.  Yes, they asked the staff to choose which day off they wanted.  So................ White folk took off on Columbus and Black folk took MLK.  Just another way to divide and conquer.

BTW, I have NEVER heard of Juneteenth before, either, and half my family is Black.

My son is the most recent High School grad (2 years ago) and he never heard of it either.

Once again Trump is correct.

I grew up in Oklahoma also (till '69) and have lived in 9 different states mostly in the west part of country.  Never heard of this.   Strange.

We have some similarity.  I grew up in Oklahoma.  Left in '68.  I've lived in seven different states (and two provinces).

I heard of Juneteenth several years ago but I had thought it was country-wide rather than just Texas.  It's interesting that the pro-black culture people want to emphasize the date with its common name.  The name emphasizes the ignorance of the ex-slaves of the time.

Do ya'll spose that the reason you haven't heard of it is because either you weren't listening in history class??? or maybe that unit on slavery wasn't  considered essential for your future understanding of your fellow man!!!

Well considering I haven’t had a US History class since 1981 or 1982 (and it was one of my better courses) I know it was never discussed. Also all 3 of my children had US and World History in high school as recent as a maximum of 7 years ago and it was not a part of the curriculum from talking to them. My youngest was very into US History and World History (All 3 had either AP or Honors courses) her final 2 years of HS and did not recall Juneteenth at all. My son and my oldest daughter were back to back Valedictorians (2015 & 2016) and my youngest was 6th in her class (2018) so I’ll take them at their word.

Since i took world history in the mid 60's, AND don't remember any mention of this historic date, I wonder if it was a small foot note at the bottom of a page somewhere.   Not sure in the real scope of US history, this wasn't as important as the the act freeing the slaves, thus it wasn't mentioned.

LOL!  It has next to nothing to do with real history.  Slavery in the U.S. was ended about seven months prior to the general's announcement.  Juneteenth was not well publicized throughout the country until twenty years ago or so.  I'm not sure there's yet any reason to include it in a history class.
