driving 3.5 hours north in 90 degree heat taking kids yamaha fjr1300 (sport touring) cycle up there to him so he can have it this summer to ride around.  I told him he had to find someone who has a garage up there to put it in since 2 blocks off UW campus sitting outside is not safe sitting outside all the time since lives near college campus going to college.  He found a friend who has a 2 car garage with only 1 car going into it ever but is not locked but better than sitting outside just have to remind him to lock the steering wheel in the garage all the time.  Wife is following or leading me taking her SUV filled with 2 bicycles (1 for each of my kids) to them as well and other stuff.   Going to get a 7 a.m. start hopefully to avoid the majority of the mid-day 91 degree heat since the cycle is already somewhat uncomfy for me vs. our VAlks and my scooters.  Handlebars even with smaller risers on it am still leaning forward and down in my shorter arms/hands to reach just a few inches more than I would like to and more so the darn feet positioning is a smidge too far backward bending my knees/fat legs-thighs-ankles in an unnatural position about 3-5 inches too far back for my liking.  is not a true crotch rocket positioning, but got it full of gas short 5 miles ride today and could tell just in that vs. my 195 miles one way tomorrow my thigh muscles were tweaked a smidge not use to it.  I guess I should stretch more but never have been a limber/flexible dude ever.  Most of my riding is 50 miles per day or so only a few times at most per year is ever over 100 miles in one day.  Pushing 200 miles one way in the morning 3.5 hours will be pushing my limits even on a Valkyrie per day in that heat let alone kids somewhat uncomfy fjr1300 which also likes to get VERY HOT on legs/calves from heat of engine coming at me on the sides one drawback to the fjr1300, older ones anyways.

If that scoot has drilled brake discs get padlocks that will go thru those holes or one of those heavy duty stranded cables for M/C security. Course as yer aware ain't nuttin theft proof. Do NOT envy you THAT ride atall.  Undecided RIDE SAFE.

If you eyesight is good enough to ride in the early morning predawn hours try leaving about 5:30-5:45, maybe that will be just right on how fast you heat up.

However you do it, ride safe and enjoy the trip. Good luck to your son.

Must be a local thing Gavin. I've seen others in that area refer to it as "driving their cycle". We Hoosiers "ride" while the Cheese Heads "drive".  Wink

Yeah someone stating they DRIVE a MC gets under my skin and I had to let the steering wheel thing go but rarely does he Drive his MC over 50 miles he may think it is a steering wheel.  ??? Roll Eyes
Glad you took the time to take the bike to him so he can RIDE!

I'm liking your thinking Jersey Mike, When in this heat in FL I leave at 5 AM to avoid the high temps. Kinda like the way I'll be leaving for InZane.  Wink

got er dun,  was not bad leaving 7 a.m. got there 1130 a.m. 208 total miles one way,  only got too hot to bear that last 1 hour or so in the morning.  If was my cycle,  I would get the tallest handlebar risers around and get a bigger, more far back and lower seat for me.   Every 50 miles I had to stop did so 5x's all at kwik trip gas stations  to get off that thing my butt and more so my hands got numb for being too low and down.  Is pretty bad when your entire hands get tingly and numb after every 40-50 miles or so having to stop.

Anyone know if they make way upfront hwy. pegs for a yamaha fjr1300?  I was totally surprised I did not get any leg cramps prone to only 1 leg/feet position which is about 4-5 inches back more so than I would prefer.  You know it is time to go on a diet when my gutt was hitting the gas tank from leaning forward a smidge to reach the low and too far forward handlebars  (sorry not steering wheel....   2funny)

Only got on it ONCE from a stop sign since the wife was following me behind me in her SUV kept it under 80 mph....  fast enough for me on that thing.

What did my kid do once he got the cycle?  WE chatted for an hour or so and in the dead heat of the day early afternoon in 91 degree temps took it out for another 70 mile ride for an hour or so but he said he came back sunburnt and dead tired needing a nap.  I said try 3 1/2 hours of riding, although i never went 70 miles in one stretch of riding (not driving-LOL 2funny)  that morning without stopping and was only in the 80s when I was riding that thing.

Funny thing was I met an older guy my age or so 50ish with his kids parked next to me in an SUV at one of the kwik trip stops and he said how was the riding looking at me funny,  me somewhat older and fatter than the average frj1300 rider am sure.  I said NOT mine but the kids cycle taking it to him and he said the same thing about being a good DAD riding such a cycle that far me telling him I live about 3 hours south of here.

I went over 3 blocks away before he left to ride to see where he is keeping that cycle stored.  Not a HUGE fan on the storage area is closer to college campus by 2 blocks and thought it would have a closing door even if unlocked but all it is is a concrete blocks 1 1/2 car garage stalls underneath a 20 or so apt. complex for college housing and saw a bunch of grizzly looking long haired white and blacks smoking in upper deck look like a bunch of hoodlums while I was sweeping out the 3 inches of dirt, dust, and rock accumulated it looks like in that concrete stall for decades.    You know it is bad when my heavy duty push broom was unable to push 3 inches of dirt/rock anymore needing to use a piece of plywood laying around to sweep it onto the board about 10 times.    I told him if he does not lock the steering (sorry handlebars-LOL  uglystupid2)   facing inward towards the wall it will probably get stolen this summer more than likely.  and put a cover over it to disguise it since not many kids in that area am sure have a 4-5K cycle mostly scooters or smaller cycles.

Might look into a wheel lock of some sort around the front fork or back shaft drive around the rear wheel but he said he has chains and locks at his gym he goes to that he might use just in case.

Nice job Wink sorry for your frequent stops getting up to your son place but I know he is very appreciative. Your advise on having a place to keep the bike, locking it up, covering it and then help clean up this garage is passing on some good responsiblity. With the wife following you up is a good wife too. angel Prayers for your son's safety and good judgment on riding around this BIG campus of UW.  coolsmiley

certainly is bigger than my one main drag town of 1100 people where you can park outside on the street and worst things you have to worry about here is the neighbor kids hitting the car or cycle with their bicycles.  Wife had to follow me with her SUV since had 2 bicycles to bring up as well fixing 1 of them since the front rim got bent up there in same apt. complex my other kid is moving into last fall by some am sure college kid doing it for craps and giggles is all.  Too bad I was not up there saw the rim being bent by 1 or 2 college punks they would be wearing that bent rim wrapped around their necks permanently,  unless they started running and then after 50 yards doubt I could catch them.  Plus, had to fix the broken toilet handle and leaking showerhead both simple repairs taking 5-10 minutes each is all.  One would think since renting the darn owners of the property would get right on that and fix it vs. not doing a darn thing for a few months?  I would NOT pay monthly rent until fixed if I was making rent payments.  My kids need to stand up for themselves vs. being pushed around or ignored.

Just hope that cycle does not get stolen or with the way young college kid punks are nowadays smashed up for craps and giggles.

A quick word on the wheel lock, get one that has a lanyard or some type of lengthy cable to attach to the handle bars to remind him it’s on there. I’ve seen a few forget and pull out to get quick not so subtle reminder...
