' Let's go !'      Doesn't sound peaceful to me.  This has gotten out of hand.

Just saw that a few moments ago myself.  Here is another look.

Look at the second video.  It shows the "group" in question.   I wonder how they area allowed to march down a main road armed as they were.

not sure what the laws are in that state, but apparently is o.k. to carry guns loaded on a public road?   Roll Eyes

pretty sure in WI you get arrested for that.

I like the older heavier set white woman in front of that speech.  she is pretty confident and courageous for if I was in the middle of all of that,  I would feel very uneasy....

This is definitely NOT a peaceful protest:

Quote
Many of the protesters carried rifles, including military-type weapons, and some wore ammunition belts slung over their shoulders. Although African Americans appeared to account for the vast majority of the marchers, protesters of various races, men and women alike, were among the group.

You don't show up for a "Peaceful" Protest armed to the teeth.

This is clearly an attempt to start an armed conflict:

Quote

One video clip showed a leader of the demonstrators, who was not identified, shouting into a loudspeaker in a challenge to white supremacists who historically have used Stone Mountain as a rallying spot of their own.

“I don’t see no white militia,” he declared. “We’re here. Where ... you at? We’re in your house. Let’s go.”

I do also but I do have a question about firearms in a State park. Illegal here would assume it is in Georgia?

From my quick read of Georgia firearm laws it's perfectly legal carry a long gun as long as it's "fully open and exposed" in a state park, even without having a concealed handgun permit.

They used to have a pretty good laser show in the evening, starts just as it's getting dark. It's not an all day place but I found the displays interesting and worth the price of admission.

I don't think it is a State, County or City park. Don't know if they receive any tax money. Or if that enters into the agenda.

I suppose laws differ state to state. For at least the last couple years, we can carry in Tennessee state parks (licensed). 15% of Georgia residents are convicted felons, and 33% of black males are felons across the country is a fact. Only a guess, but probably higher in Georgia.

Like Serk, I support those lawfully carrying, not felons of any kind that illegally posess firearms.

The Newsweek article and headline (as is normal for the MSM and other news groups) is misleading.

It states.  "Armed Black Militia Challenges White Nationalists at Georgia's Stone Mountain Park"

Further reading the article it appears there were no White Nationalists on the property at the time.

Furhtemore, it indicated that they were escorted by the police.  In my view of the video (which was marginal) I saw nary a police car.

Further from the story.   It's a public park, a state park. We have these protests on both sides of the issue from time to time. We respect people's First Amendment right," Bankhead told WXIA-TV. "We understand the sensitivities of the issue here at the park ... so we respect that and allow them to come in as long as it's peaceful, which it has been."

Personally I object to any protest authorized or not, that shuts down a major access road to a park (state or national) which restricts my ability to visit said park.  The First Amendment is not a one way street and your First Amendment rights do not supersede mine just because you were there first.

In additional, while the news article states they "were orderly and acknowledged the Confederate monument is frequently used as a meeting place for far right-wing militia."  It also noted the following:

......... challenging white nationalist groups in the area to either come out and fight .......

If you are challenging someone to a fight, that is not peaceful.

Sorry for the long rant but I am tired, very tired of bending over backwards for protesters on any sort that block access by the general public or threaten the general public as part of their "protest".

I tired of even peaceful protestors doing this the first time I saw it in DC in the 90's....

The particular event was preventing Pentagon workers (both military and civilian) from entering the building (picture in the Washington Post had a Navy Cdr or Capt standing up to the protesters, among others).

I am tired of protests as well.  But particallry when they obstruct a citizen's ability to move from point A to point B.

The First Amendment allows freedom of assembly but it does not allow you to disrupt my movement.  There is a difference.

All protests, other such things should be allowed if and only if, they don't limit a citizens access to..... you fill in the blank.

I am sure there are enough laws on the books that this can be implemented.  But, sadly, it probably will not be anytime soon.  Somewhere, somehow, the stuff will hit the fan.   And then we shall see.

While not exactly in line with this thread, I noted that the GA Governor called up 1,000 National Guard Troops today.

When I first read it, I thought it might be in response to the Stone Mountain thing. Turns out not so.  The National Gurad will be used for, wait for it,

To protect the state capital, the Governor's Mansion and the Department of Public Safety Headquarters.
