I did some remodeling on my daughter’s kitchen recently. She had put her dibs in for me when I retired. After we got back from some funerals in Missouri and Texas I got started on it. I’m old and slow and it took longer than someone good would take. But, it came out pretty good I believe. (She’s happy with it) My grandson diligently got up every morning at 7 to help me. He enjoys learning new things, and I was able to show him how to do tile work and some plumbing stuff. Having him help was a real pleasure. He’s been pretty much stuck at home or over at our house swimming for months now. I really wanted to do something fun for him for helping me.
I wanted to take him on a ride, but that was shot down by my wife because of the heat. In retrospect that was a good call. It’s about a 4 to 5 hundred mile ride to escape 110* around here. He (and I) probably would have been miserable. So we settled on Brenda’s Miata for the trip. I really wanted to take him to Yosemite for a hike up to the top of the falls. It has always been one of my favorites. But with this Covid stuff they had Yosemite’s day passes where you had to log in at 7 am for a pass the following 2 days. I tried 3 mornings in a row and was beat out every time. I got frustrated and gave up on that idea. We settled on a couple days camping in Durango. Weather was good. We went on hikes and went to Mesa Verde. Had a great time and didn’t want the trip to end. We decided to go up to Arches National Park. It was great, but hot. We hiked up to the Delicate Arch. The trail sign said 1.5 miles each way. I thought no problem. Uhoh ! That was the longest 3 miles of my life. 100*,with no shade, uphill the whole way about did this old man in ! But, it was fun.

The arch that almost did me in !

I thought I’d see pics of the kitchen. Your grandson will remember trips like this forever.

I don’t think I took any. I’ll get some from my daughter. I’m sure the highlight of the trip for him was seeing Grandpa puke his guts out on the side of trail. (I could hear him laughing) I’ve been hot before, I’ve been exhausted before, but that was brutal !

Rob, what a great trip with the GS, hope to do one like that with my son and GS together. I don’t remember which arch it is but walking thru sand about a foot deep at those high temps tells you just how old you are quickly. It’s a ride report.

Nice trip report!   cooldude All  of these are familiar places, I like to get that way as much as possible.  I've been to all these locations many times and heat was definitely an issue -- vests and electrolytes were must haves.  These trips are reserved for early spring or mid October nowadays.

Ya Delicate Arch will dang near kill ya on a scorching day.

Nice report, and it's great being a good (and fun) grandad to that young man.   cooldude

He's growing up, even from pics you posted last year.

My grandad once took me to a WVa cider mill in his old '53 Chevy deluxe.  It was a pretty good trip, but he smoked those awful black March Wheeling cigars nonstop the whole trip, and I almost lost my lunch in the car.

Rob,
Great story and nice photos!
Thanks, Jerry  cooldude

We got home yesterday. Took this on the way back. I was asking Brayden if he remembered the scene in Forrest Gump where he stopped in the road at Monument Valley. I couldn’t remember exactly where it was. Come to find out, he had only seen 15 minutes of the movie. 45 minutes later we came over this rise and I tell him, I think this is it. Actually, I think I stopped a 1/4 mile too soon.

Rode many a mile with my Grandad. He smoked cigars too, probably some cheap Mexican ones though.  Smiley
