Going to swap to an Interstate tank and I know the standard seat won’t fit without modification, so would it be easier to get an Interstate seat? Will it fit a standard? How much shorter is it from a standard seat.

Interstate seats are great big giant double-seats... Are you riding your Tourer/STD with an OEM seat? I sometimes think about getting an Interstate tank...

The standard seat will fit without modification. It is tight at the nose but It will fit. Been there done that. And no an IS seat wont fit a Std/tourer. The back of the seat attaches different. The std/tourer rear seat bolts down. An IS seat is one peice not two like the std and has a Tab that slides under a bracket on the back.

I have an I/S tank on a 97 Std., I have a Diamond custom seat, it fits right in, had a Mustang before that but it wasn't for me. The only issue I have had is not the tank but the seat latch was tricky and wasn't opening enough to release the hasp on the seat. I played around with it and the latch assembly mount can be adjusted by bending it which makes the seat release cable anchor point move away from the latch which opens the latch farther and now the seat releases beautifully.

As said, the standard seat will fit behind an interstate tank, but the larger tank makes the seat nose a tight fit, and it could lead to problems with the seat latch (or not). Also, where the seat will rub the back of the tank, you might stick some clear tape to protect from paint rub. If you like the std seat enough to keep it, you could take it in to an upholstery shop for a small nose job (small trim), if you don't like how it fits or goes off and on. Now the only aftermarket seats for Valkyrie which are not std/tourer vs interstate specific is Mustang (Wide Vintage for Valk) which are made for all models. I am not sure if a Mustang driver's solo will fit with an OE backseat pillion (and the vinyl wouldn't be a good match). Mustang solos can be found used (with and without backrests) (and studs, yuk).

Back in the day on the forum, some modified the seat and called it a nose job. Peel back the vinyl and cut the foam. Staple down the vinyl when you get the fit right.

My OEM seat will be going in this winter for some custom work. Any idea how much needs trimmed off? I won’t be able to have the bike and seat available for the shop to test fit... JJ

JJ No clue as I stated before it will fit. Spend $$$ if you want but it is unnecessary. Crazy if you ask me especially if you will ride this bike. The stock seat sux.

There's a lot of misinformation being passed. The tanks and seats are the same length.
The OEM 2000+ Standard (and Tourer) seat has a nose that rises slanted forward to go over the Standard tank. The Interstate tank rises up more sharply at the rear so a Standard saddle will be pinched a bit. It will wrinkle at the nose but it will fit. If you don't like the wrinkle you can take a bit of foam from the underside of the nose to remove the wrinkle.
A pre-2000 Standard seat may have little or no wrinkle.
Aftermarket seats that that don't imitate the OEM nose overlay will fit just fine. Ultimate will get the nose wrinkle. Corbin will not. Mustang will not. Diamond will not.
Don't swap your seats for an Interstate seat. A 2000+ Standard saddle is prettier and more comfortable. If you have a pre-2000 saddle replace it with a post-2000 seat or an aftermarket.
