Bought my Valk with an almost new Avon....so it will be a while before I need a new tire. I have a VT1100 Shadow Tourer (baby sister to the Valkyrie) and I run a Zeetex 175/70-16 on the rear and agree with Valkarado, love it. I'm going to order the Valk's Zeetex this winter to ensure I have it when needed.
Higher mileage, better ride, lots of grip. To each his own. If you're a hard charging, curve carver that drags your pegs all the time......maybe you should use the softer compound MC tires, like Shinko 777. But if you leisurely cruise the back roads, casually drift through turns in a relaxed position and like to just motor on down the asphalt......CT is the best, in my NSHO.

Bike tire about 8,500 miles.
Your choice.

I tried a CT If I remember right it was a General Altimax 195/65-16.
I didn't love it but I didn't hate it either.
My current rear tire is a Metzler Cruisetec 180/70-16.
Now this tire I love.
It's at 13k mi and still has 1k or 2k of life left in it.
That's the best mileage that I have ever gotten out of a rear tire and it rides & sticks well.

Trapper I leisurely cruise on those Zeetex tires -- when I want to. When I want to tear up the mountain twisties they do really well for that too! It's the best rear tire I've run, including several Avon's and Austones!

Thanks to Valkorado I run on Zeetex now.. leaning hard into turns the tire feels like it grips the road like velcro, when running straight it's as smooth as silk, and when in slow-n-go traffic it's less work to handle. I think the profile is a tad higher too, which cuts down rpm's a bit and translates to better mileage. Riding 2 up and staying around 3000 rpm I'm getting 31 mpg, and that's with #38 slow jets in the carbs. This fall I'll swap in the #35's, until then I'm a happy camper. I've never felt so secure on any MC I've ridden as I do with the Zeetex on the back of my standard.

I would like to know where you found a 175/70 16? I owned a black 99 VT11000C, sold it after putting on 50k but never went darkside with it. I think the stock rear was 170/70-16. Not seeing either size in a Zeetex.

JJ I've been getting 12-16 K miles out of the Metzeler 888's (front and rear) Since I got my Valk (and that is what it had on it when I obtained it). I usually keep the tires at about 40PSI cold to get the best compromise between mileage and grip.

Tire mileage has a lot to do with where one rides, that is the content of the road surfaces where one rides. There are, of course, other factors but road surface tends to be primary.

They are just completing a bunch of chip seal work around here and as usual they did a lousy job. Way too much chip, not enough oil to seal. On the county roads they don't use rollers and leave it to the local traffic to pack it down. That's great unless they don't get around to sweeping for days (they never do). Lots of loose sharp chip builds up in the corners. Seems we have to remind the country there are motorcyclists living here who drive these roads to get to and from home on a daily basis. SWEEP UP ALREADY! Plus, I pick sharp little chips out of my car tires after almost every ride, I don't want them wedging their way between the treads. Some of those sticky little arrowhead shaped tar babies can cause headaches if they imbed themselves and "burrow".
That annoyance aside, even once packed down that stuff is like riding on extra coarse industrial sandpaper, and motorcycle tires get chewed up bad here. Between that, lotsa torque and some exuberant throttling, I've had to send some to pasture at like 6k. That was the initial reason darkside was so appealing to me. I'm sure happy I gave it a go, for so many reasons including -- believe it or not -- handling. Avon's were a good rear m/c tire and I stuck with them for awhile. When I bought the 99 IS Big Bertha she had some obnoxious square 200+ thing that looked and rode like one of those stone Flintstone tires. I was browsing a Wing forum and a guy calling himself Dusty Boots was commenting on liking the Austone Taxi Tire plenty. Ordered one and had it slapped on. I liked it plenty too! Loved it actually until riding two up even with Progressive 444 HD shocks set halfway up (pretty damn stiff) we had some rubbing on the upper part of the rear fender. We knew we could feel it. The rub marks were apparent and fresh. Still, we only seemed to scrape on the big bumps. That Taxi Tire rode so good I was determined to keep riding them. Went through a couple on both bikes. Then they stopped making them. It was sad news at the time. Blessing in disguise in retrospect.
I went on the hunt. I knew I wanted heavy duty, load bearing, all season, fairly stiff sidewall tires like the Taxi Tire. I could go without the rubbing but still wanted a slightly taller tire to ease up on the RPMs a bit. I also wanted a similar profile. Seriously looked for several days in the spare time. Liked the looks of the Zee but was tentative about trying a light truck tire. Would it be to "heavy" or clunky? Too noisy? The ads said it keeps a "flat footprint", which just didn't sound quite right for m/c application. Still I had a hunch and pulled the trigger on the beast. I'm glad I did. It is heavier than any tire I've put on a bike, but that may be part of it's great handling. It grabs, sticks and goes where you want it to. It's quiet and smooth and transitions from that "flat footprint" to a corner cutting wedge with minimal effort. It will not track snakes and lines, at least not like you might expect from a car tar and somehow less so than the narrower Austone. There are lots of cracks and snakes here and I hardly even think of avoiding them anymore. Same with stuff like cattle guards, etc. That beefy heavy tire likes them now, eats snakes for breakfast. It even seems to smooth out rough roads quite a bit. Again, maybe the weight? Also, it loves two up and feels stable handling a passenger's weight with no noticable handling issues. I forget she's there!
Yup I'm raving about it. It's a good 'n!

My apologies. The size of my Zeetex is actually 185/75-16. Getting old and "thought" I remembered it was close to stock T size. It's a little taller than stock, reduced rpm's and corrected the speedo error almost entirely, according to the radar speed signs and checking against my wife's van. Hoping the taller CT on the Valk will do the same.

Not sure how you corrected a front wheel driven speedo error by replacing a rear tire.

It's a nice looking tire Britman, but Ive had no difficulty leaning on the Zee. I also wanted the 8 ply, two on each sidewall. I hope to ride some twists with you someday! After seeing your strips, it's definitely a softer compound tire than the Zeetex. Chip seal would eat 'em pretty quick up here.

Square profile. Horrible. Had to have the pressure so that the tire would deform when leaned to keep a decent sized contact patch. My summer ride was stomped on by the plague. I like CO until it snows. Hwy 149 and Keebler Pass are 2 of my favorites.

Wow, you're more adventurous on your fat lady than I. Kebler Pass is so beautiful. Last time I went over it was a few years back in my Ford Ranger. I rode it many years (decades already?) ago on my XL350 but I've not done it on either of my Valkyries. It's only partly paved and can be a bit hairy in parts -- packed dirt, potholes and washboards. And oncoming 4x4's zipping around the narrow corners. Some of the best fall colors in the state are tucked away in those mountains! I like Colorado until it snows also. The wicked cold is hard on the old bones, too.
