I am going to purchase a couple of five gallon gas cans.  I purchased one in the fall of last year for gasoline and then one for diesel.

The new cans stink and I am considering modifying them using this YouTube video.

Has anyone else done this?  If so, what has been your experience?

Also you can go on Amazon or many other sites to purchase real live actual gas spouts and vents for cheap..... You'll actually spill less gas after the fix than with the crap you have to buy now. And that's what the damn things are for...  uglystupid2 There should be some type of fine or penalty for anyone who doesn't do the fix.   cooldude

The new [ well 20 years old is still new to me] gas cans are a royal PITA ! So they just sat around collecting dust for years. So 5 or 10 years ago I stuck in the valve stems [ always have them hanging around] and ripped off all that 'safety' crap.
I now have more useable cans/jugs than I can use.
Just as a disclaimer; I was told about that trick, I'm not smart enough to think of it myself.

Just go buy the replacement spouts. Make life a lot easier.

I bought these.

Fortunately, all my cans but one are good old ones.

I have one of those SOB No Spill Jill's and she sucks the big weenie.

I wondered why it had a handle on the back as well as the top, but when I got it to finally flow gas (only 150lbs of thumb pressure on the button),  I realized why it was there.  That 5gal can is freeking heavy while trickling it's gas out (like it has an enlarged prostate).

No decent vent means no (or lousy) flow.  The inventor should be made to walk the plank.   We're from the govt, and we're here to screw things up.

It's always the last one to get used, and I had to use a big funnel to dump it's gas in my truck (only took like 5 minutes  crazy2).

Jess's is busted. No spill jills work great. I can fill up my weedeater easily without
spilling  a drop. Gas flows out like it was an open tube. There's a spout extender too...

That looks like a good fix. I haven`t done it though. Most of my early life were using these at -20*. They really sucked !

sounds like a cheap fix , NO vent means NO pour...

am sure it would work.   that guy in the video having over 10 five gallon gas cans and a whole other shelf full of big jugs of bottled water is prepared for the zombie apocolypse.  Either that or all those gas cans set on fire the garage he has the water jugs to extinguish the flames.   Grin

I see on craigslists all the time good old fashion gas cans like the two I have from 25 or so years ago with the vent in back for like 10 bucks on sale.   I was at Walmart today and remember walking by one of those newbie gas cans it was one of those dinky 1 gallon useless gas cans for 10 bucks - WOW!  that is a lot for a pretty much useless 1 gallon (or maybe 1.25 gallon) gas can IMO.

Thanks for all the input and information.   Really appreciate the insight.   Will update this thread with the course of action I take.

Which may take a few days.  Especially if I order something from a place like Amazon.

His fix looks to be more trouble than necessary.  I bought a multi-pack of flex spouts with vents and changed all my newer gas cans over in a few minutes.  Something like these:  https://www.ebay.com/itm/3pk-Gas-Spout-Replacement-Replace-Old-Gas-Can-Fill-Kit-Fuel-Diesel-Water-black/133188093325?hash=item1f02a1058d:g:ImkAAOSwRrJeuwHW

Keep in mind the stupid new cans weren't designed to do something like get close enough to fill your SUV without spilling.  And good luck getting the can at the right angle for the bogus vent to work.  Never mind holding it there for twice as long while it   S    L    O    W    L    Y  drains.  I'm not as strong as I used to be.  If I want to transfer some aging gas into my truck to use it up I generally get out the stepladder and put it up high so I can siphon it.  Yeah sucking on a siphon hose in a gas can, that's a good safe idea.  And great fun lifting the heavy 5 gal gas can up high with my torn rotator cuffs. Thanks Obama.  JERK.

I've kept on using the eagle brand metal ones specifically for 5 gallon capacity. Even have metal 1 gallon for saws.
