Hi, everyone! Mike and Denise Parker here saying 'hello' to the board! We recently picked up a 1999 I/S...55K miles...grn/slv...beautiful bike and we're excited to have her!

I do have a question...the previous owner said the carbs were cleaned and sync'd just 3K miles ago, however the bike sat for the most part of the past 2 years. She idles a bit low (like 500-700) and from idle if I give her some throttle, she'll sputter and die. If I ease into the throttle the rpms will pick up nicely. I've added some STA-BIL to the fuel and have been running her at the problem rpms as much as possible. It's improved slightly but the hesitation is still there for sure. I did advance the idle adjustment just a bit as she was idling at just 1200 at full choke. I've got her at 1500-2000 now. Soooo...should I stick with the fuel additive for a few tanks or is 2 years of varnish too much to dissolve (meaning I should have the carbs serviced and be done with it)?

Also, any recommendations for carb servicing in the PNW?

Thanks!!

Put a full can of Berryman B12 in each 1/2 tank of gas.
Repeat, repeat. I don’t think you can over-dose B12, but if that doesn’t help you may need mechanical carb work. If it improves continue using it until satisfaction.

Stabil is not a carb cleaner.

Hi, everyone! Mike and Denise Parker here saying 'hello'

Hello back Mike and Denise, nice to have you around. This spot is great for the locals, but don't forget the General forum posts to (maybe you've already done that, but I don't always go there).

Stabil is more for storage, to stabilize the fuel so it will work when you wake the engine up a year later or ? Someone also suggested the Marine version (and we're all close to the water too).

Like Earl suggested, you want a carb cleaner, and Berryman's B12 is a great one. Drive the bike in the range that it's giving you trouble.

Set you idle to the recommended 900 rpm at warm up, and just reset it to that, as the engine changes.

After a couple of tanks of new fuel with the carb cleaner, switch to another, like Techron. I also just try to fuel up at Chevron anyways, even when adding B12.

Each year, I store with Stabil marine, and after my first new tank of fuel, I add my 1/2 can of B12 to 1/2 tank of fuel, just as a nice maintenance thing. When I go on a long trip, usually after the first tank (when I'm in the mountains driving a little slower on the winding roads), I add a full can of B12, just to flush the carbs out.

FYI
the tech forum and search can answer a lot of questions too.

Shoptalk, has a known Valkyrie problems post, I recommend to read.

Thanks for the replies. I read a LOT of reviews on different sites that recommended the Sta-Bil for cleaning varnish out...but I'll try the B-12!

I've been reading the FAQs and known problems...there really aren't many! I love it. Thanks for the info!

I forgot to mention, check out our annual Valhalla Rally. The weekend, thurs-sun, after Father's day, and we try to meet in the autumn too, this time Sept 17-20. Waiting on the boarder to open.

If you haven't noticed yet, the local Seattle boys meet up the 2nd Sat of the month.

Welcome from another relative newcomer to the Valk world!  Hope we can have a PNW gathering of Valks in the fairly near future, before we're put away for the winter.  I'm along I5, between Centralia and Longview.

Whooray, one of incarnations in the Army was 3rd ACR, "If you ain't Cav........"

Rode safely today.....250 miles round robin, got a little warm.....not bad enough to stop.  Good, safe ride wishes to all.

Hey! Just following up...I used the Berryman's B12. About 1/2 bottle to a full tank...ran it in the problem zone for around 1/2 hour then let her sit for a day...then ran her again...no improvement. So I said "screw it" (well, it wasn't 'screw'...lol) and poured the rest of the bottle in there...repeated the 30 minutes/day of rest and VOILA! She now idles better and has no hesitation off-throttle when fully warmed up. What a difference...even sounds better at higher rpms...and smoother. I did play with the idle adjustment screw a bit as well...she's right at 800rpms now...but again, ZERO stumbling/hesitation off idle. YAY!! Thanks to everyone who pitched in their knowledge!
