Welcome to a great organization. Reference your problem, lots of good information and all knowing folks on this board. I would not be one of them but, I can definitely advise you of one thing I can already see is wrong. It's got the wrong name on the title. She should be sitting in my garage with my name on the title. Love the colors! Let me know if I can fix that problem for ya. Rams

I am even less (is that possible) mechanically inclined that Rams but....
Check if there is a fuel filter under the tank as they can cut fuel flow and also if there is a kink in the gas line under the tank. These machines are gravity fed.
Nice Valk by the way and as a guy with big feet I like the highway boards

I got a deal I could not pass up on for this 97 with 18k miles. Within a couple of weeks that I've had her she already looks different. It recently died on me at half a tank and once I filled her up everything was perfect again. Any clue as to what would cause this? Thanks in advance.
A clogged or kinked vent line could cause that. Also if one has an inline filter with a line that doesn't go continually down it can develop a bubble and act that way. Filling the tank increases the weight above the fuel line. You can check for the plugged vent line by opening the gas cap and see if that fixes it. Of course you may need two keys to do that.

If this continues (for whatever reason) and you can't get it figured out right away, you can slip a thin ziptie in the gas hole and snap the lid closed on it, and that should stop it from not venting properly (building up a tank vacuum) while riding.
As a quick fix to get home or to the station when it acts like it's out of gas, but it's not.

I had that happen once. It was because I had the tank off to change air filter and when I put it back on it kinked the vent line. First clue when it quit was when I opened the tank cap and it made a woosh sound as air rushed in,,so I rode it home with the cap open and fixed it.

Great looking bike and welcome from Florida. I had that happen to me before when I had a tank off and it was a kinked fuel line , IN my case I shortened It 1/4 of an inch and no more problems.

I had that petcock issue and rebuilt the vacuum side of the petcock and replaced the vacuum line from #6 to the petcock. Just an FYI; The blacked out taillight lens is illegal in all 50 states as it’s a Fed DOT regulation.

WOW!!! Very nice score! That color combo is a great one for sure. Where are you from? There may be someone close enough to you to help you if you cannot get it figured out. Might be a good idea for you to put your location in your profile.
Anyway.....Welcome from Central Florida!

I have to agree with everyone else, nice looking bike and welcome to the VRCC.
Hopefully you’ll enjoy it here, there’s a ton of great info in the historical documents on repairs and maintenance.
The search option is a great tool for posts regarding almost anything related to mechanical issues or any other topic as well.
This is a great group of people here and will help out with their knowledge and experience.

Welcome. Nice bike! As was said check for fuel line mods. They usually are the cause. Quick releases, extended lines, extra filters. If all is normal disconnect the fuel valve switch from the petcock and lift the back of the tank to see the vent line. If that’s not kinked then you probably have a bad petcock. Very common. I replaced mine with a Pingel and never worried again.

after reading up I feel like the pingle would be a good route.

Do what you think best but the symptoms you describe are easily fixed without investing in a new petcock. If you do want to abandon the vacuum control the OEM can be converted to that but is not necessary. If you do go to non-vacuum control you should add an electric fuel flow valve.

after reading up I feel like the pingle would be a good route. Many people install the cover set fix. I did that only to have the other side the switch side go bad a year later. It’s my opinion that the Valkyrie is a well engineered machine with a couple pieces that are its weak points. The stock petcock is one. It’s just not an excellent piece of equipment. A pingel racing fuel valve outperforms the stock one greatly and is way more reliable. If you go with the non vacuum one like I did you must dedicate yourself to develop the habit. When you grab the key to start you open the valve. When you grab the key to shut off the bike you close the valve. I just make it a two hands thing. If I’m touching the key I’m touching the fuel switch

A small coin which you likely have on hand will do that too.

Welcome to our madness. You might like to add your location to your profile, easier to see where you are from for others. You can check for other forum members, and list them by state, should show up others closer to you. Always liked that bright yellow, but I like the IS more, and that colour isn't available.

Welcome and I like the pic, and the petcock or fuel line like others have said. Dont let that go make sure you dont have a problem since it could shut off all together.
