Be willing to bet it wasn't fireworks..... Also read it was a Hezbollah weapons store...

That kinda shockwave doesn't generally come from fireworks, but high explosives...

(Maybe Detn8tr can chime in here.)

One tiny piece of good news out of this - for the first time in many months the lead story on all the news sites I check is not the normal trio of either "Peaceful Protests", Covid or Orange Man Bad...

Fireworks my A** ! That kind of explosion is more like Military grade High Explosives (like C-4 or more explosive and lots of it ).

The plot thickens.  Now I'm hearing a warehouse filled with, "high explosives confiscated from a ship".  Hmmm.   ???

They've updated the wsj page to where it says this much now:

Dozens of people were confirmed dead and thousands more injured after a massive explosion caused by a warehouse fire rocked Lebanon’s capital city of Beirut.

The warehouse held highly explosive material, including sodium nitrate, said an official with Lebanon’s army. He said the explosion was likely caused by a fire, and wasn’t an attack.

The explosion is bad but the shockwave shows just how big the explosion is and did the real damage. I have not seen a shockwave like that without some very serious explosive material. Now Im sure Dentner8 could have something to say about it.

Maybe those folks were just tired of Portland and Seattle getting all the good press coverage.

2,750 TONS of ammonium nitrate that'd been sitting in a warehouse for six years?!?!?!

https://www.nbcnews.com/news/world/large-explosion-rocks-port-area-beirut-cause-unclear-n1235767

(For reference, Timothy Mcveigh used 4800 pounds, not tons, but pounds of it for the Oklahoma City bombing (Although it was also mixed with nitromethane and diesel.)

Edit to add - And the Texas City explosion of 1947 was "only" 2200 tons of ammonium nitrate, and it was considered the largest non-nuclear explosions in history (And the deadliest industrial accident in U.S. history. - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Texas_City_disaster )

One of my initial thoughts yesterday was what a stupid place to wharehouse something like that. Is there any speculation on what caused the reddish plume ? That shock wave coming at the dude videoing was FAST ! I'm curious how far away were broken windows.

Reddish plume is because it was unfueled meaning it didn't have diesel fuel added and was unconfined. adding diesel fuel to ammonium nitrate is what makes it a commercial blasting agent. Even properly mixed explosives will smoke when not fully confined. Although it is more yellowish....

My 2 cents.

That looks like rocket fuel exploding. The red is what is catching my eye. On the other hand there wasn't a fire ball or at least not what I can see?
