checking out one of those Sleep # beds....the price for a full size isn't much more expensive than a good traditional mattress....the draw in my mind is that there aren't any coils to poke you in the kidneys/back and you can make it softer or firmer as you need to.....my "old" mattress is only 3-4 years old....I didn't buy the cheapest nor the most expensive, but since I have to sleep all night on just my back since I started CPAP, my back is usually hurting most mornings now.....I read some reviews for the Sleep # bed and most of them weren't very good....sagging cells, mold/mildew in them......
My Wife has her own bed and when she bought a new mattress last year, she had to trade the first one in after it turned out not to be what she wanted...they made her wait the entire 30 days before they would exchange it for another one...just laying on one for a few minutes isn't a good indicator of how good the mattress will be for you...the only thing I am SURE of is that I don't want a plushtop...hate the way you sink into them and they make me too hot.....

Before you try it , Ask if you can return it before the 90 day free trial if it does not suit you. I myself have not had any luck whatsoever with air and never liked the water beds. I have the one you can drop the bowling ball next to you and not spill the glass of wine? We have had this one for I think 5 years. They said you never have to flip it or turn it. However with my big ass my side started to get a depression although slight. We turned it, because you can't flip it with the pillow top thingy? I have been happy with it and am still. I think a couple of Hotel chains have exclusively changed to the sleep number beds? Maybe you can ask or read reviews from them? I think Country suits near Sanibel island FL changed to them. Hope you find something that works for you.

Steamer,
Do yourself a favor and check out the TemperPedic or off brand memory foam mattresses. The temperpdeics are about $1500 for a Queen I believe, I had one and gave it to my son when he moved out. Now I have a memory foam I bought at Costco for $600. I am extremely pleased with both. I don't think your be disappointed, and I found them to me more comfortable than the sleep numbers. Also nothing to break, like air pumps.

We had one and didn't like it much. It was OK... but we had a king... and there was always a groove between the sides... that we would roll into if we tried to snuggle at all. We had to put a blanket in it, then there was a hump there. So... we have a tempur pedic now and we're going on 6 years with it.

Stan.... I have been on a CPAP for over 10 years now. I have a Tempurpedic, king size, that I love and my wife doesn't. I also usually sleep on my side. I am not quite sure why the CPAP would make you sleep on your back. I CAN sleep on my back now, but usually don't.

SS,
Good luck with your quest. Been there and it's not fun.
I've got lower back problems and as I get up in age it seems to be getting worse.
We went through the memory foam things and it made my back worse, plus when you lay on it and it gets set it's almost like trying to crawl out of a crater to roll over. We tried the cheap sleep # and it was terrible. I think it was $599 and to me it was a glorified blow-up mattress!! They shouldn't even sell those. We sent it back after the trial run. We went through 4-5 other types (hard/ soft, pillowtop/not) one about every 6 months and decided to come back to the sleep # but try a more expensive one (I'm thinking $2300) that has a pillow top type on it and it seems to be the best. About 50% of the time I still wake up with a sore back but even then it's waaay more bearable than with anything else we tried. Before I'd be tearing up trying to make it down the hall from my bed to the Advil bottle in the kitchen!!
I suggest to get those that will allow you to return/trade them after a month or two, as you probably found out by now these things aren't cheap. My Chiropractor says your supposed to lay on the mattress for at least 15 minutes in the store before you make a decision if it feels right for you.
Again, good luck!

have a water bed with the thick foam cover for 20yrs now, thinking of replacing the foam cover on general principles soon.
no waves if my wife or I get up during the night and we dont even need the heater cause the foam is so thick. 2 of my kids also have water beds
They have come a long way since the 1970's

I HAVE A SLEEP # BED AND WILL NEVER GO BACT TO A SPRING MATTRESS. THE THING I LOVE ABOUT IT, IS I HAVE BACK ISSUES AND DEPENDING ON HOW MY BACK FEELS I CAN ADJUST THE FIRMNESS OF MY BED. THERE HAVE BEEN MANY DAYS THAT AT THE END MY BACK IS KILLING ME, BUT AFTER ADJUSTING MY BED I WAKE UP WITH NO PAIN.

Don't be tight when it comes to your bed.You spend 1/3 of your life in there and a bad mattress can ruin the other 2/3 of your life.

My brother and his wife have a Sleep # bed and they really like it. They went from a waterbed (full-wave action) to this after their cat and dog kept putting holes in it. I used to have a waterbed (also full-wave) but my wife hated it. So when we got married, we bought a regular pillow top spring mattress (I forget the brand...maybe Posturpedic??) and I hate it. It wasn't a super expensive one, but not exactly cheap either...about $650 seven years ago for the mattress and box-springs. I really miss my waterbed My chiropractor really recommended I ditch the waterbed too...but I don't think she knew what the heck she was talking about. My back hurts worse now with this POS mattress. It is just too firm for me. I really liked how the waterbed provided full support without any pressure points...unless it got low on water for some reason.

We went from a waterbed to a Select Comfort bed, (thought the transition to a regular mattress would be too much), that was about 10 years ago and it worked well. If we have to replace this, it will be with a Tempurpedic. They are expensive, but I have heard, well worth it. Definately arrange a "try out period" though, most places offer it. Good Luck!

Stanley, I had a top quality traditional king spring and mattress, and three years later got another great mattress, but they were still not right. So I went to this website and bought a memory foam topper and added to the existing setup, and have never looked back. Before you spend large for a complete new bed (unless yours is shot), I highly recommend you consider trying a foam topper for what you already have (for a couple hundred bucks, you will be amazed at the improvement, in comfort and sleep). The deep pocket sheets fit the mattress and topper just fine. When I got mine, the choices were much more limited than now. A two or three inch medium density memory foam topper on a good bed is still like a brand new bed. We do flip the mattress and pad every few weeks. My only complaint with this setup is that the foam warms up with body heat, and can get too hot for me near morning in the hottest summer weather (of course this never bothers the wife, who would have 5 down comforters on there all year round if I let her). I am thinking the 4lb "cool comfort" in a 2 or 3 inch pad would be optimal Also, my folks in their 80s (mom on the CPAP, and dad with laminectomies) moved from a bed to good quality reclining chairs to sleep over ten years ago. I got them a foam topper to be cut and placed on their chairs, and both have been forever grateful. Close to you too. Steamer, If I where you , I would stay away from the memory foam, that stuff never forgets anything...the stuff you say,the stuff you do and sounds you make in bed will always be in the foam. If big brother gets the foam to talking, you might be in trouble!!!! :'(

There are two main reasons I sleep in a different bed than my Wife...one was the snoring which CPAP has prevented now, but the other reason is because I hate to be too hot laying in bed...so the plushtops and memory foam toppers really wouldn't work for me...I tried laying on them when I bought the last mattress and didn't like the fact that they conformed to my body...made me feel too hot...I only sleep under a comforter in the winter and a woven blanket in the summer months with the ceiling fan going....Abby is cold natured and likes to have a lot of covers over her, so after we conduct our "business", we seperate to opposite corners of the house...I like it that way.... I think I need to just go and try some new mattresses out and see if I can get it narrowed down....it's just so hard to tell without spending a whole night on something and I'd definately have to have a 30-90 day trial period...I think some of the problem may be that I need to lose about 20-30lbs and maybe that would help also...I am going to do my best to work on that before my upcoming 40th Birthday....I know I'll have to spend some $$ to get something nice, but dang, some of those things are several thousand bucks...thankfully I only need a Full sized bed since I have it to myself....

I'm jealous! I have had a sleep number bed for about 3 years, and am hoping to find something to replace it soon. I wake up with a sore back more mornings than not. I sleep best on the mattresses I find in Holiday Inns ... gotta remember to find out what mattress they use.

.I didn't buy the cheapest nor the most expensive, but since I have to sleep all night on just my back since I started CPAP, my back is usually hurting most mornings now.....
I have been using CPAP for about a year now and started always sleeping on my back. I did a couple of things that allow me to change positions a lot more; I have my mask fitting better and seem to be more relaxed with it and I recently built a headboard that allows me to have the machine above me and the hose hangs down over my head now and this gives me more freedom. When I moved to this house five years ago I had two homes for a while and so bought a new queen bed for us. It was fairly expensive even on sale - I seem to remember that it was one of the bowling ball mattresses. I never did get real comfortable on the bed and the mattress was replaced on warranty but still wasn't "right". I finally went shopping for a new bed and ended up getting a conventional mattress set from Sears. I was in the store and they had a sale on, so we looked at quite a few. The saleslady was good and knew about mattresses. I think her advice was that with my physical size the single coil mattresses were not a good thing and showed us a lesser priced mattress that would do a better job of supporting my back. I ended up buying the less expensive set and don't wake up with a sore back anymore klike I did every day with the more expensive set. I would recommend that you try and find someone that really knows what provides the best support for different body types and can make a recommendation for a certain type of mattress construction based on that rather than hype. May be a long search but it worked for us.

Interesting to see all the post regarding the sleep #'s, my wife and I bought one from QVC (she will deny it, but she is addicted to that show). Anyway, we got one in august with a 60 day return, we sent itback 30 days in, glorified air mattress IMHO....paying that much for a new king bed, I should sleep better than my old bed...we are now contemplating the Temperpedic Celebrity bed... Once we get it, I will let you know how much I like it...unless it is really good and I am sleeping all the tiime...

Y'all are goiong to hate me.
I had a king size slatted bed frame made years ago in England.
All I've ever used on top of it is a very firm mattress about 6 inches thick.
I sleep like a baby every night.
My ex and I had a regular king size bed. I hated it because it was too darn soft. I ended up putting a sheet of plywood under my half of the mattress.

CPAP. ??? Hate to admit it, but I think I'm gonna have to try it. I know I sleep good and all but my work partner can't! She always threatens me that she'll stick a tube down my throat! Might go get a sleep study done. Coworker did and he loves it. He can sleep on his belly and all. I might just use it at work. Kit barely notices it anyway. Sorry for the highjack. Can't help ya on the mattress. I have a pillow top. Had it for about 6yrs now. Good thing is that when I flip it, pillow top on the other side! Also bought a egg crate thing to sleep on.

We've had a sleep number for 10 years now (King) and love it. No flipping and it doesn't get an indention where you lay. We bought the classic (Cheap) one and added a feather topper and it was heaven. Wife decided to go to a temperpedic topper we got at Sam's Club and I have gotten used to it but prefer the feather topper as this makes me get hot. I'd never go back to a conventional bed. As you can see from the mixed reviews, it really does vary depending on the person apparently. We LOVE ours. Dave

Do not, do not, do not let a mattress salesman talk you into a latex mattress. I got rid of a perfectly good Sealy because it was too stiff for my wife and bought a latex mattress. It's like sleeping in a giant marshmellow. I can never get comfortable and have to sleep without a pillow to keep my neck from hurting. Wife likes it, though. I'm going today to buy a sleep by number bed.

I only sleep under a comforter in the winter and a woven blanket in the summer months with the ceiling fan going....Abby is cold natured and likes to have a lot of covers over her You can compromise, we do. I use only a very very light sheet in the summer, and a light throw in the winter. Wizard bundles up under the comforter year round. We have a queen sized bed, and that bed has two separate top sheets, with the comforter for his side and my light fleece throw for mine (and a spare fleece throw in case it gets cold -- the window is open from fall till the end of spring). It's not lonely that way.

A certain degree of it is probably a lessening of tension -- most often when we're in hotels, we're on vacation. With the amount of traveling I'm lucky enough to do, I probably spend the equivalent of 3 months or more in motels, and even then, I find Holiday Inn is easiest on my back, followed by Comfort Inn.
I choose, whenever possible to stay in Red Roof Inn, Motel 6, and now Drury Inn, because of corporate pet policies. Even when traveling without my dogs, I like to support places that accept them without making me pay astronomical non-refundable deposits for them.

A certain degree of it is probably a lessening of tension -- most often when we're in hotels, we're on vacation... I was kinda thinking on the same lines but lately (last three years) the times I spent in a Motel 6 was on South Main in Houston just south of 610. We were there to either see a specialist Doctor for an early appointment for the wife or she was going to surgery and needing to be at the hospital like 6 in the morning. So I don't think it was the lessening of tension, maybe I had too much on my mind to worry about the back pain.

We have had a Select Comfort (Sleep Number) king size bed for about 12 or 13 years and we still like it. Mine has the old style wired remotes that do not have any sleep numbers, just air up and down buttons. We had trouble early with the wireless remote units and after 2 remote / pump replacements we asked Select Comfort for a set of wired remotes and a refund on the difference of the price. After talking to one of their supervisors they agreed and sent me a new wired pump, remotes and $150.00 back. I have had zero problems with the bed since. My wife likes the matress to be soft and I like it firm. I usually sleep on the foam divider that is in the center between the sides. I would buy another one without question. They do take 1 to 2 weeks to get used to.
Merry Christmas!

Go check out the Original Mattress Factory, when we finally find the money to get a new mattress that's where we are going. Violet found one she likes and the Pillow top is also a pillow bottom so you can flip it. The price is better than those froo froo kinds, I got too hot on the foam ones and I could buy another Valk for the cost of those airbags. Just MY opinion on that subject
