What was she thinking...……………  Shocked

https://www.aol.com/article/news/2020/08/14/motorcyclist-survives-violent-bison-attack-in-south-dakota/24590369/

A herd of Buffalo, a camera and riding a motorcycle, what could go wrong?  All I can do is shake my head and wonder what the hell she was thinking.  Some folks apparently don't use their head for what it was intended for.

That bison really spun her around, looked like she slapped her head on the road a couple time as it was giving her the ole whip around. She’s lucky it didn’t run her through in the stomach or chest with its horns, she probably would have bled out at the scene.

Helpful hint to remember is they’re wild animals, it’s not an open petting zoo.

Never, ever, get between a baby wild animal and Mama. Regardless of what species.

Even the domesticated ones don’t like it much. I’ve spent several hours in barn rafters or hay feeders after a previously gentle cow didn’t want me tagging her newborn calf.

Motherly instinct is a powerful (and good) thing.

seen a daddy full grown alpha black male bison up close 6 inches away in a RED SUV at the time.  Not so sure RED is the color of choice no horns in side of car luckily in South Dakota.  Daughter age 8 or so at the time screamed was eye to eye snorting at her just glad not break the glass rear SUV window and stick horns inside.

Darn herd of bison blocked the roadway for an hour or so until the National Guard came in with their humvees and moved them right along.

ON a cycle not so sure I would feel to comfy with them 1-2 feet away walking right up next to me.  Luckily Valk quiet exhaust loud exhaust would piss them off am sure.

Having gone thru the Black Hills and Yellowstone many times, buffalos are rather impressive critters. Had them walk by my truck and was seeing eye to eye with them.

Some folks just plain should go there.  No comprehension on what they can do and how fast they are.   No buffalo are not to be mess with.

Had a domestic bull take offense to me being in his pasture.  Sat in a pecan tree for over an hour while my boss found the owner (who was suppose to have remove said bull from the pasture) to come get me.  Owner came to my rescue with two horses.  One for me.  Climbed down out of trees into saddle.  Bull left us alone.  hey got paid the same to sit in tree as would have if was working.  Little hot and no water.

Raised on a ranch myself.

In High School, I worked at the local livestock auction.  My job was the three Ss, (Select, Sort and Separate) the different types of cattle into what was best for the sales ring.  Bulls, cows and calves, heifers versus steers, whatever...……..   Even (So Called) domesticated cattle can be protective of their offspring.   Worst I ever dealt with was Santa Gertrudis Bulls.   Never met one that seemed to like me.   Shocked

I sure as hell wouldn't get close to a buffalo cow (especially one with a young calf).  And some folks think I'm crazy but, very few think I'm stupid.  Wink

Buffalo in Custer park in South Dakota! Watch out for the large adolescent bison. They like to play.

We were there 7-8 years ago. Wife and I riding the Wildlife loop in Custer park. On a 99 Sonoma Red and Cream Valkyrie. Come over a hill only to roll into a 100 head of Bison.

Big traffic jam and we stop behind a car. And just sit there among the Bison.

Couple young, but large, adolescents stroll on by. I could see it in their eyes. We are going to play.

They get about 10' away beside us then huff, stomp, and turn and charge the bike. Lead one hits the brakes but we're on the pavement so it skids frantically trying to stop and it's hooves slide under the bike. It regains it's footing, backs up, and trots away.

Never actually touches the bike that I could tell but it was that up close and personal.

No doubt laughing its butt off.

My wife is screaming to "GO, GO, GO!!" but there is a tremendous traffic jam and we're stuck behind a car anyway. The idea of making a break for it in the middle of a 100 head of buffalo seemed like a poor idea at the time too.

We finally and slowly move out as the bison thinned out. The looks we got from the other drivers suggested that it was exciting to watch! Playing with the buffalo is a rush. That is for sure. Can't say I recommend it. But makes a good story.

This A-Hole decided to charge at us last year in Yellowstone NP

Unprovoked he decided to charge straight at us.

When he got within 40ft I revved the engine and made as much noise as I could.

He hesitated and sidestepped just enough for me to pop the clutch and take off.

I did yell at my friend Larry to come with me.

Buffalo are big, they are mean, they are scary and they are A-Holes.

She wasn't thinking.  It probably would have turned out much better for her had she simply thought this one out.

Then again, maybe not.  uglystupid2

This may be a case of her thinking the buffalo wouldn't consider her a threat.   She obviously wasn't reared around livestock or, in the country, heck, not even a zoo.   Roll Eyes

It's hard for me to be sympathetic to someone who simply demonstrates a lack of good common sense.

More than 10 years ago in Yellowstone.  I'm following Buffy, further away than it looks from telephoto perspective compression.  Still, if he had turned around and charged it would have taken some rapid swerving and acceleration not to get rammed.  Of course the wing and yours truly are capable to do that but still, not smart.  And never mind if everyone else could have done that.  It would have been a mess, likely someone hurt.

Ya, I never understand folks who actually get off their bikes or out of their vehicles to take photos of large wild animals...happens with tourists up here all the time. We see a lot of moose here as well...I find them to be very unpredictable, much more so than bison, bears, or even deer.

First time we rode through Yellowstone about 10-12 years ago we saw only one lone Bison all day...he paid us no mind. Must have been a day off for Bison in the park that day Grin

Riding home from Spearfish Inzane several years back somewhere near Yellowstone, we rounded a corner and I had to stop short as there were several cars stopped in the middle of the road and on the shoulder, observing these grizzlies on the side of the road. A whole family directly in front of us was actually outside of their van taking photos. There was no room for me to get around them so I yelled at them to get the he**  out of my way, when the bears started charging. They scooted back towards their van, and the Mrs snapped these shots as I was navigating through the maze of other idiots stopped in the middle of the road. Sure wasn't going to sit around on the bike with those two charging at the crowd.
