Back when I was a Production Manager, I had an employee that would wear shirts and hats that sexually orientated. Unaware the first few times he did this, I got a complaint from someone that thought it was offensive.
I immediately pulled the Union Rep in and advised him that either he could address this or I would but, I could assure him that if I had to do it, there would be several union members irritated and they would all know that he had the first opportunity to get control of the situation.
Don't think I was afraid to take action, I just thought I should give him an opportunity.
He did and the problem went away for a while.
Next thing I know, the same accused individual was at it again. At that point, I put in a new "Dress Code" that applied to every person that worked on my production floor. No printed Tee Shirts of any kind, no hats allowed, no shorts and safety toed/shank protection boots for everyone. The company had allowed folks to pick the safety shoes they liked previous to this.
Didn't take long for the message to sink in. I later relaxed a few of those rules. But, kept the no logo and no hat policy. Moral to the story, if you want to participate in some social movement, do so on your own time, here we work.
Next came the jewelry problem. But, that's another story...……..
Rams
what, you do not like nose, tongue, belly button rings? There were 2 ladies in my same dept. who got small stud nose rings. Probably should not have said anything but told them both do they really like the looks?

I like to keep things simple, I believe in the KISS rule (Keep It Simple Stupid). A no jewelry rule means precisely that, no jewelry. Had an employee once that got his loop ear ring torn out because the GM made the decision that some things were acceptable. Same facility had a lady get her belly button thing caught on a conveyor and tore it out. Another got a nipple ring ripped off. All were lost time injuries. Someone else had to work these folks shifts because they wanted to be cool. If you keep the rules simple and enforce them, fewer people get hurt. K.I.S.S. Has absolutely nothing to do with what jewelry I like or dislike on people. Rams

Working at a Federal agency, we actually had to put out a dress code that put a stop to some of our administrative staff showing their thongs and underwear above their pants, and breasts falling out of their tops. Especially one particular gal that had (giant) boobs covered in tattoos that she believed everyone needed to see (think the Sistine Chapel of boobs). Personnel had to turn the actual dress code drafting over to us lawyers, so it could be written in a politically correct way and not get management in any trouble. When I was going through military training, it was explained that yes we were a uniformed service, who wore uniform uniforms, but much of the uniform regulations went beyond customs of the service to just making sure that everyone shaved and bathed (ever) and wore shoes. And I once did have to tell a female she was required to wear a brassiere even if she didn't need one. It said so right in the reg. She claimed discrimination, and I referred her to the IG (who later called me up and cussed me out). I also had a pregnant officer complain to me that the maternity uniform was demeaningly terrible and served only to punish females for getting pregnant on active duty. I told her I agreed with her entirely (they were terrible uniforms), but she was going to have to take it up with HQ/HQ uniform people, not me.

Ya, but, you guys took quick action to resolve a problem and were willing to enforce these actions. That is what was/is needed with all the 'protest' problems today.

All or None, and I am leaning towards none as it can all lead to a minefield of animosity between employees of different views and religious beliefs. The workplace needs to be inclusive without the political overtones that come with much of the cap/t-shirt logos. One political exception..."VOTE 2020"

Yep - "All or None, with the preference towards none". When I was working , there were a few things I would not get into discussions about - 1. Religion 2. Politics That right there eliminated 70-90% of arguements.

Just in case, I am canceling the idea of purchasing Good Year tires to replace my Chinese made Uniroyal tires on my pick up. The very day this made news, I had settled on a set of GY's from Sam's because they were $80 off with road hazard, free rotation etc. I bought the Uniroyals from a book at my small hometown tire store because I liked the tread design. They have served me well and was at least 2 yrs. old before I discovered they were made in China one day while cleaning them. They have well past aged out and starting to crack. I never would have bought them at the time had I Known this before hand. I'm not so picky today, I'm just looking for a good tire at a good price without the Good Year name.

The Japanese tradition is everyone wearing a company uniform. A spirit of teamwork. Japanese companies in the US often provide the uniform. At a Japanese plant, an employee's function may be identified by the color of the shirt. I rather like the idea.
Was that colored shirt their idea or, are they Star Trek fans? Rams

I think its a good idea, at least out on the manufacturing floor. Among management (who all generally dress in suits and ties) - I don't know a good way to do that - maybe something like undercover / civilian dressed cops do for "Color of the day".
SOmething to build TEAMWORK and not cause division in the workforce.

Well, the President is not going to tell me what tires to buy. I can hear it now... "I know tires. I know a lot about tires. Listen, I know more about tires than the tire companies do. Believe me. No other President has ever known as much about tires as I know. Sleepy Joe doesn't know anything about tires. Tires cause the China virus. We're going to sell Puerto Rico and turn Greenland into the Trump Tire Plant and Casino and Mexico is going to pay for it. It'll be huge. Believe me."

He's not going to tell me [ or probably anyone] what tires to buy either. I'm a republican, I'm able to decide that all by myself.

And on the other side of the coin..... when I become president, I'll make it mandatory to buy Goodyear tires, especially the ones made in Mexico and I'll provide free tires to illegal immigrants. -RP

As was pointed out to me on Fox News, Ohio, home to a lot of Goodyear employees, is a swing state so Trump needs to tread lightly on the boycott talk. I think his point has been made since Goodyear modified their stance on some of their edicts. I still won’t be buying Goodyear products for reasons already stated earlier. Well, the President is not going to tell me what tires to buy. I can hear it now... "I know tires. I know a lot about tires. Listen, I know more about tires than the tire companies do. Believe me. I appreciate your jab at Trump, classic Trump being Trump parody. Your comment about health insurance is emblematic of the problem we see in our country, it doesn’t affect me directly so no harm no foul. You are usually not so short sighted and uncaring.

On the jewelry sub-text - I worked the flightline in the AF - weapons. Mandatory no jewelry worn at work including dogtag chains, rings, watches. For safety reaons. They could get electrified and arc weld burn the crap out of you. One guy slid off the wing of a F-111, his ring caught and he left his finger and tendons on the leading slat. Some women were touchy about their hubbys taking their rings off. "OK, then their's punishment for violating orders, and / or losing the finger."
Worked at AT&T, a software shop. The boss got tired of unprofessional looking T shirts, mandated wearing casual shirts with collars, no printing on them. I liked my T-shirts, that was most of my wardrobe, they weren't political, mostly about hang gliding and we never had customers in shop. So I made up a sign that said "ARBEIT MACHT FREI" in protest. Somehow kept my job. Guess I was an essential employee...
