Interesting, what brought about that change?

Yes but, those subject to the UCMJ are in a different situation. Double Jeopardy might be applicable in this situation (maybe). Rams

When I said "It's still not going to apply to Active Duty Military..." I meant that the UCMJ / their command would require them to keep wearing helmets anyway.

I wonder where they came up with the age of 26 ? Seems like a strange, arbitrary age.

Many years ago, I ended up riding in Arizona (my first no helmet state) and I took my helmet off.
I was so used to wearing one (halfs), that I felt weird the whole time. And I got a sunburned head.
Ever since, I wear mine no matter what state I'm in. Even though in my very few falls, I've never touched my helmet to anything.
The military won't give you a ticket (except on base), but if you get hurt (off base) and the lack of a helmet contributed to your injury, you might get an Art 15, and you would be found not in line of duty due to own misconduct (in a Line of Duty determination). The bad thing about that, is that if your injury results in any permanent disability, you would forfeit any possibility of post-service VA disability (either money or medical care) from any injury in service found not in line of duty. And if you missed any duty time (hospitalization), those days are added to the end of your enlistment (if an enlisted man).
So I always wear a helmet.... but I never wear one of those orange safety vests (which has nothing to do with safety, only SJW horsehocky).
I wonder where they came up with the age of 26 ? Seems like a strange, arbitrary age.
They probably tapped into insurance company statistics showing ages of MC accident victims.

I know that many folks like to go lidless. I fully support their decision, if that's what they want to do. It's their heads. I also believe that those underage should be required to wear a helmet until reaching a state's adult status but, that's where it ends if the state allows helmetless riding.
For me, I always wear a helmet. Had I not been wearing a helmet two years ago, I most likely wouldn't be here. I had facial injuries, a concussion and multiple bones broken or shattered. That helmet kept me above the sod line yet, I still support those who choose to ride with out a helmet.

I’ve ridden a lot of miles without a helmet over the years and I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I’m sure it would be a must less enjoyable experience going down hard without a helmet. I think my issue with helmets is that I have never had one that was comfortable. They have all seemed heavy, hot, and restrictive. The only time I can recall being comfortable in a helmet was on those early February mornings at 5:30 am pulling out for Bike Week and it’s 27 degrees, I never got hot and had no desire to take the helmet off. I would like to think there is the perfect helmet out there that I could be comfortable wearing but I have yet to find it.

I wore a helmet all through high school... everyone in Dirt Bike magazine wore them... it seemed "normal".
I had no motorcycle during my college "dorm years".
Then I got an 82 CR-250, and always wore a full face helmet after that...
I bet having always worn a helmet makes them a lot more tolerable than if you never wore one.
A couple of these days-long trips to InZane in the summer and I really appreciated a helmet. Shade! I remember Joe's scalp getting sunburned. Have him tell you the story about his sunburned face and lips :-) ...

I have never ridden without some sort of helmet - it just would not be natural for me. Same for fairing / windshield and eye protection on helmet. Any more, I'm always in jeans / slacks (when riding to work) and usually in a jean jacket for warm weather casual riding. I have also taken to always riding gloves and leather shoes / boots (preferable).

I've been Very fortunate with my helmet choices and fit. Heavy-yes. Warm/Hot-yes at times. When I was motocrossing in Japan I was Required to have full leathers well above the ankle leather boots and a helmet and goggles and face shield. Even sand hurts when it is slung back at ya off a knobby tire. Couple years back a man I had met a few times-American Legion Rider-while riding in Arkansas-no helmet required-went down and he expired from head injuries that Might not have caused him to expire had he worn a lid. Lots of us here have been called hard headed over the years by friends and family. Our heads are Really NOT that hard along with the jelly mass that is your brain. BUT as others have stated-Should ALWAYS be the Riders CHOICE. I helped defeat the helmet law in Illinois in the 70s cuz the Rider should make the Choice. RIDE SAFE.

age 18 in WI as well which I agree with. Maybe the younger generation by being forced to have a helmet on will sink in it is a good idea long term? That being said should be personal choice as well as riding attire.... Your body, your boo-boos if fall down.
