well the company I work for got hit early last week with I believe ransomware bringing our entire company operations to a HAULT the past 6 days.   It hit and we lost 12 million in receivables last MOnday ONLY 1 day,  not able to recreate thru banking but as of yesterday we got it up and running to apply it all manually starting 10 a.m. yesterday no thanks to our IT DEPT being no help to us.

NO overtime approved so basically 24 hours of work will be 50+ hours easily just for the one missed day, on top of doing all of 8-24 thru 8-28 yet to do.  Month end is this Friday so not busting my chops if all does not get posted this past week or so behind... cooldude   Am taking off 2 hours this afternoon for an appt. I had scheduled 2 weeks ago before this hacking happened and not cancelling it either.

What techy  nerdy punk thinks of such BS holding companies hostage to their programs, etc. thinking they will get away with it?  I heard from a former IT tech at our company that this Ransomware can and has brought down companies to their knees dissolving them permanently.    I wonder who at our company clicked on something they should not have done and if any slapping on the wrists will happen?    At my company it all depends who you are.  If was me who did it,  I would be fired.  If my boss or bosses boss,  a slap on the wrist is all.   tickedoff

They usually do get away with it, they're generally in a non-extradition country, and tracking down their identities is VERY difficult since they generally demand (And often get!) multi million dollar payments via Bitcoin or other blockchain currency...

Few recent examples where the ransom was paid:

I knew Garmin got hit with a ransomeware attack but did not know they paid $10,000,000 to the attackers.

I get emails daily from places I believe are false and might well have potential issues.  If I don't know where the email came from, I delete it.

Many of these emails have an indication in the sent with a subject of "McAfee Anti Virus" and a From of "Internet Security".

If you highlight the "From" line and click on the little down arrow you get a sent from address of "no-reply@spotify.com.  Thats the most "normal" one I have seen.

Still, don't open, and delete if you don't know for darn sure the origin of the message.

Cookie,
You may get slapped yet. Wait until the IT guys start going through the servers and finds out how much time you spend on this site vs. working?

was lunchtime when posted!   cooldude    Our IT guys are not smart enough to figure it out since most are in Canada outsourced several years now.  Cannot be any worse than boss and bosses boss taking 1+ hour lunches daily but then again they are exempt/salaried not hourly,  supposedly putting in longer hours than me but also making 3-5x's my salary.   Roll Eyes

was not making fun of Canadian IT people, just that is sad the company took over 3/4's of in house IT dept years ago and outsourced it to Canada is all.  Sorry I offended you did not mean it that way.   The one guy who knew our old 1980 mainframe system left the place in December when all hell broke loose then as well system crashing due to December maintenance that needed to be done and he was the only one who knew about it when he left.  I asked my co-worker who has been there 20 years semi-retired if she has seen in 20 years this many HUGE issues with our systems crashing and she said NEVER.   It has crashed making this the 3rd time in almost 2 years loosing critical data potentially ruining the company.    Will see if the big shots want us to work overtime next 2 days (still not get done all)  for month end to get financials posted this entire week needing done yet due to backlog of manually applying 8-17 data that our IT dept. could not autoapply overnight for 6 whole days wasted.  I am not saying a word for I gave my advice, after discussing with my slower co-worker,  last Friday to my boss and she said is not my decision but mgmts.  So, she can shove it for she is totally clueless on how long manually keying millions of dollars takes for she does not know our jobs at all.   So,  I took off 2 hours personal time yesterday as well for a dentist appt. I decided to go to after 3 years not going to which boss approved 2 weeks ago that should help get money posted right?   2funny    Dental exam did not go well though he said I need 2 crowns at 1100 each of which my cheap company insurance only pays 50% so going to try to wait 4 more months until 2021 to go on my wife's dental plan that covers 80% for crowns.

My wife was actually hoping, for she going thru similar issues with her company/supervisors/co-workers, them having a shared service mtg. for all on Tuesday that they would announce the main headquarters would move to St. Louis MO shutting down corp. headquarters where she is working now in WI.  Unfortunately that did not happen was a pep speech of what is coming in future months/years supposedly.   She saw a big shot supervisor's papers on the copier he was dumb enough to leave in the office last week on the copier, showing information on housing in St. Louis MO so she was sure all of shared services was going to move to St Louis MO where a part of their company was from also.  She still thinks it will happen for she sees confidential information on big shots and a lot of them have housing there as well in St. Louis and the new big shot is from there as well.  One big shot there makes in 2 weeks what I make in an entire year in salary. uglystupid2

I don't know if my company got hit but a while back they really started trying to drive it home how serious the issue is. We all had to take in house classes on how to avoid ransomware. They have also started a program where every month IT sends fake malware and have added a suspected phish button on to Outlook so we can just hand it over to them to check out.

would not surprise me.  My wife's company outsourced and is still in the middle of outsourcing 100's of jobs to India, even administrative/acct. jobs and it is a nightmare to say the very least.   Try talking to someone who does not speak English or if they do speak English not very well at all?   Roll Eyes
