I'm posting this since I never knew about Lee Marvin's war record until recently.
He died of a heart attack on August 29, 1987, aged 63.  He was buried with full military honors at Arlington National Cemetery

Marvin left school at 18 to enlist in the United States Marine Corps Reserve on August 12, 1942. He served with the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific Theater during World War II.[7] While serving as a member of "I" Company, 3rd Battalion, 24th Marines, 4th Marine Division, he was wounded in action on June 18, 1944, during the assault on Mount Tapochau in the Battle of Saipan, during which most of his company were casualties.[8] He was hit by machine gun fire, which severed his sciatic nerve,[9] and then was hit again in the foot by a sniper.[10] After over a year of medical treatment in naval hospitals, Marvin was given a medical discharge with the rank of private first class. He previously held the rank of corporal, but had been demoted for troublemaking.[10]
Service Years
1942 - 1945MOS
8541-Scout-Sniper

Marvin's military awards include the Purple Heart Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with V Device the Presidential Unit Citation, the American Campaign Medal, the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Combat Action Ribbon.

And unlike most Hollywoodians, he not only talked the talk, he walked the walk.

My favorite line of his in a movie is where he is berated in The Dirty Dozen for arranging for hookers to entertain his condemned men before battle.

I understand a dozen common prostitutes took an active part in this illegal party?

Oh yes, they definitely took an active part.

When you see the scene in a film where a guy pulls a dead enemy soldier into a fox hole and hides under him...That was Lee Marvin in reality.

This is a great read and very worthwhile.

He was quite a man, one of a kind.

Has anyone even watched the interview of him, he didn't really want to talk about himself. Instead he told of how Bob Keesom [ Capt Kangaroo] was the bravest man he'd ever seen.

  I always liked Lee Marvin.

Somewhere I read a list of the Hollywood stars that were military but seemed to be unknown for their service. Micky Rooney , Don Knots and Jimmy Stewart just to name a few.

IF YOU LOVE YOUR FREEDOM , THANK A VETERAN.

ALSO, when ever I see a police officer ( leo , cop) I say " thank you for what you do".

Another fan favorite of mine was George Kennedy. He had a long career in the Army and when he left was a Captain or a Major. Kennedy also starred in The Dirty Dozen with Marvin and played his role very well.

2 of my favorite movies besides The Dirty Dozen by Lee Marvin were The Big Red One and The Man who Shot Liberty Valance.

I've heard/read that too. I'm not a fan of Mr Snopes. Don't know whether it is true or not but I heard that interview years ago and what Lee Marvin had to say.
