Psycho's 17 y/o grandson is in renal failure. He needs a kidney transplant. If you would consider being tested for donation, please PM me.  Otherwise, prayers and good thoughts are appreciated.

(P.S. His sister is being tested, but if she has the same hereditary cancer markers, they won't use hers).

I know we're a motorcycle club.  But we're more than that... we're family.  So, I'm turning to our "family," hoping that someone will want to help out Gavin.
6 1/2 years ago a VRCC member (Carolyn Schmidt smitten) donated a kidney to Psycho.  She was a God-send and we are thankful everyday.

The basic qualifications to donate include:
Good physical and mental health.
BMI less than 35.
Must be free from: Diabetes, cancer, hepatitis, organ diseases, infectious diseases.
Compatible blood type

Incompatible blood type doesn't eliminate donation, as they can do a "paired exchange," where you are compatible with another recipient that has a donor that is compatible with your recipient (and they essentially trade).

Here's a bump for him.  A 17 year old has a lot of living yet to do.

I hope they/you or whoever finds a match.

Praying for the grandchild. It saddens me that I can no longer donate anything. I donated blood every 8 weeks for years until they decided I could have mad cow disease. Now with the cancer diagnosis.  Even though it’s in remission I can’t donate anything. I hope he gets his kidney  angel

Yeah, cancer kicks you out of donation pool.  Thank you for the good wishes.

f6gal, A few things put me out of the running.  Is there a link or something I could share among my network to search for a donor?  I would like to do something to help.

Yep, it may be hard to find among a bunch of older guys. I’m diabetic and still humbled by Carolyn’s giving heart. Praying for the best.

I'm don't think there is a link, I will find out for sure.  There is a phone number to call to request to be tested for directed donation.  Anyone is welcome to message me or email me (f6gal@yahoo.com) for more info.  Blood type O would be best, but if someone with another blood type is willing, they can do a paired donation.

Thank you for your help!

A bump for the boy.  A few ppl have offered to be tested; however, the more that test, the more likely we'll find a match.

If you don't qualify personally, maybe you know someone?

Thank you.

Update.  Gavin is out of the hospital.  He must have dialysis 3 times per week until he gets a transplant.  Several people have volunteered to be tested (thank you to all of them).  His sister will start her testing on Monday.  If she has the same hereditary cancer markers, she will be dropped from consideration.  Haleigh (the sister) is currently living with us and will be flying to Houston Saturday.  She's been very upset about possibly not being able to donate.  She told me she has been planning to donate for Gavin since she was 12 years old (it was a given that his kidney function would decline to this point).  Fingers are crossed that she will be negative for cancer markers.  If she's positive, they will start contacting the other volunteers for screening.

Just an update.  Haleigh (Gavin's sister) finished her testing Friday, so far everything looks ok.  The review board will be meeting tomorrow for final determination if she will be able to donate.

Excellent news!
Whether fortunate or not, I am marked as an organ donor and have been for years.   I did ask my Doc about this and she said no in very strong terms, no way should I consider such a gift.   The sad part is, my warranty is up and my organs wouldn't do most folks any good.   But, I do hope he gets a kidney.

Cautiously optimistic, looking forward to hearing what the review board's conclusions are...

Tell me bout it. I start 12 weeks of chemo next week. Due to my job, the doc says I can't work because of possible infection issues, I just got 12 weeks of fall fishing and riding. Gotta stay positive.

Probably one of the worst ways to justify to go fishing/cycling for 12 weeks, but if not at work, any day is a GREAT DAY.

UPDATE!

Gavin's sister, Haleigh, has been approved to donate!  Looks like surgery will be 12/16/20.  He is still on dialysis 3 times/week.
Thank you everyone for your prayers and good thoughts; please continue!  smitten
And a special thank you to those that volunteered to be tested.   smitten
