Just got my new, two piece, Ultimate Big Boy seat for my 2000 I/S. Can not get the drivers seat to latch. Have tried with and without using the key. I am open to any suggestions on how to get this seat to work. Thanks in advance. Mike in Ar

Get ahold of Des at Ultimate for advice. I don’t have an IS so I can’t offer any specific help.

Thanks Sandy. I am going to give them a call tomorrow. Just thought that I would ask here to see if anyone has had the same problem and maybe a solution to the problem.

Make sure the latch mechanism is straight and the catch pin is in the hole on the frame.....

Calling is a good idea. What Serk said, and shoot some lube in there. The brand new poly or rubber (under) seat shoes/cleats that sit on the frame can be the trouble, holding it up from latching down (lightly lube those too). Did you try getting on and sitting it latched? (though then it might be hard to get back off/or up) Do not bend the key, turning it that hard doesn't make the seat latch get looser. If sitting on it latches it down, but it won't release with the key when you're off the bike, you may need to sit on it again then reach down and try the key again.

Isn't that latch adjustable?
As for the comment of not knowing about an Interstate they all work the same on the Ultimate saddle.

With the seat off take a look at the key operated latch and how far it opens. You can adjust it a bit by bending the bracket that holds the cable to make the cable open the latch a bit more. Need a long flat screw driver to get to the ears on each side of the cable anchor to do the deed, you can verify where it is by opening the latch with the key so you dont bend it too far. I have a Diamond on a standard that required that treatment.
Alternatively, if any of the brackets for the seats are adjustable you could play with them maybe to try andmove the seat back a bit - if the hook on the seat is hitting the hole for the latch you likely only need about 1/8" to correct it. It could be that the rear seat is ahead of where it needs to be and keeping the front seat from going rearward enough.
The latch assembly itself is located by the bolt and a tit on the casting and so doesn't have much movement as I recall.

Called the main trouble shooter at Ultimate, a Mr. Russell. He told me that the latch bar on the seat, which had a slight bend in it, might need to be straightened up with a crescent wrench. So, I got my wrench and very gently applied pressure to the bar. It only took about 1/16 of an inch to straighten it. Put it back on the bike, and problem solved. Thanks to everyone who responded. I love this site. Everyone is so willing to help out, and it's members are very knowledgeable. Also, the yearly dues are manageable.

For others with similar problem, I have seen the latch hoop not penetrating far enough into the latch. If there are cushions supporting the seat, thinning them some with a sander or the like might fix it. I have also made a longer hoop and installed it. If the hoop is installed with screws, might be able to move it down a little with washers underneath.
