I bought one a couple of years ago for my 2013 GTI that was offered through my VW dealer. The factory warranty had expired and I like this car so much I plan on keeping it for awhile. Some VW's have issues for sure and I wanted to protect myself. The warranty I bought essentially extended the factory warranty for 70,000 miles and/or 7 yrs. Normally I'm shopping for a new car by the time the OEM warranty runs out, but this one is so much fun to drive, I'm holding on to it, it only has 34,000 miles in 7 yrs.

I bought the 4 year extended warranty on the Valkyrie when it was new. Strictly peace of mind of course, wouldn’t do it again.

I get the calls all the time. Whenever I get a call I don't want [ or need] I set the phone down and walk away.

I don't buy those rip-offs.

Nope, not interested.

But, I did buy the oil change/tire rotation special for the next five years.  It bumped up the price a bit but, when you consider that if I do it myself, an oil change is about  $140  (oil & fuel filters with synthetic oil), I used to change my own oil/filters every 15,000 miles with the vast majority of it being highway miles pulling a gooseneck trailer with someone else's Ford, Subaru or other carcass on board 3 to 5 times a year.   I don't do that kind of driving now but, I'm tired of changing my own oil and I still don't have that shop built, the one with a 12,000 lb. lift.   I hate crawling under one.   If I can't walk under it, I'm not doing it.   coolsmiley

I have got more mail and calls trying to sell me an extended warranty on my 2017 Ram Promaster than any other solicitation in my life.  Freeking Energizer Bunnies.  It seems that these extended warranty sales pitches may not even all be coming from the same company either, which is confusing.  I never take the calls and throw out the mail, so I guess they think I'm still on the fence.

I'm just past 5k miles and have no issue (other than I lack the masters degree in electronics necessary to understand how to use all the dash settings, codes, and doodads.  The clock will never be right and that's OK; I never care what time it is.  Push this, hold this, scroll through the menu, click your heels, salt over the shoulder, lift one cheek and let the air out.)

The one issue I have, is how to keep the flat corrugated 8'6" top of the truck clean sitting out under oak trees and birdsh!t.  Working with a stick brush on my 8' step ladder is a PITA.  That's probably not a warranty issue anyway.

I never buy any warranty beyond what I get buying the product.  Even if something breaks under warranty, trying to actually use one also becomes a big PITA.

I thought I read somewhere that about 15% buy extended warranties.   I got suckered into one upon new car warranty when bought SUV new and was planning on keeping it long time.  Well,  after 18-20 months around 22K miles the head gasket blew and few other pretty major repairs and so got it fixed under warranty and got rid of it. I though my 1 grand upfront for 10 year 100K warranty bumper to bumper besides wear parts was not bad at the time.  I ended up getting between 500-600 of that 1K back since gets warranty gets pro-rated from when sign paperwork even though well under 3/36K warranty still due to 250 dollar cancellation fee.  READ FINE PRINT.   uglystupid2

The calls are scammers and get your information and dont do anything.

The extended warranties on some cars are good to have. Its a crap shoot buy a problem car and it may save you. Buy a good car and its a waste of money.

One of the kids I coached parents sold those extended after market warrantees for cars. They live on a multi - million dollar property and have all the toys that a person could want....He and his brother started this in our area 15 years ago.

would I buy one??? NO!!!!

There's been a fantastic mechanic named Carlos doing the
maintenance on my Mini for the last five or so years. And it
is so screaming easy, going in there, getting the work done
well and quickly, everyone is happy, I pay the bill and leave.

I'd rather get a root-canal than turn that into some kind of
"extended-warranty" haggle at probably-some-other
"approved" shop...

My wife is totally different, she got the extended warranty
on her Car Max car a little over a year ago... I guess we
don't know yet how that will work out yet...

Don't know about you guys, but I'm also getting more calls than ever before (going to machine) telling me  I'm being charged $2-300 on my card or paypal (don't have) or through Amazon, or some other way, for something I didn't buy or order, and I need to call now to straighten it out.  I called my credit union on the first one to check my card, and there was nothing there.  They told me it's common as dirt these days.

I never answer, and never call back.

The chinese cooties probably has the criminals working at home more now too.

I have bought a few, but only from the manufacturer.  You never know if those aftermarket companies will still be in business when something breaks, and even if they are I've heard getting them to cover a claim isn't easy.

I've used the extended warranties a few times, but the claims have NEVER been enough to cover the cost of the warranty.  It's very unlikely you'll come out ahead on one.  That's why dealers push them so hard.

If you do get one, shop around.  The price is usually about double the dealer cost.  I found a dealership in Minnesota that sells genuine Ford ESP warranties for $100 over their cost.

A few years ago I needed a rotary hammer to drill some concrete.  I thought of renting one, but Harbor Freight had one on sale for less than the rental cost.  When checking out the clerk asked if I wanted the extended warranty.  I answered 'if it works today, I'll be happy'.  It turned out to be a pretty good tool.

I usually declined them at the dealer, but when I bought my wing, they tried to sell me a 5 year Honda extended warranty for $2000. I declined it. So he dropped the price to $1500. No. Dropped it to $1000. Ok sure. Pretty much anything goes wrong, you’re at a grand pretty easily.

Did the same with my new truck I got last week. Just kept saying no, they kept dropping the price until it got to the point where it was only a couple bucks a month on the payment for a lot of piece of mind.

You have to watch their lying though. The Honda guy told me the headlight assembly alone was $2000 to replace, said it would cover that. But you read what’s actually covered...headlights aren’t. Called him on it, he said...oh. Wonder how many he sold based on that lie.

Bought an extended warranty on tires and rims on my last Lincoln. Cost 60 bucks when I bought the car and covers tires and rims 100% for life of the car. Since they are low profile and my wife drives that car it was a no brainer. Each tire and wheel combo is 1200 bucks. To date we have had to replace 5 and they all got paid for by that warranty. Those stupid low profile tires are terrible when it comes to the potholes we get here in the winter.
paid 300 bucks for an extended warranty on my F150 king ranch for 100k miles. To date I have more than trippled what that warranty cost in repairs. Big one was the sun roof seal.
There is a time and place for them, but only if the price is right and the warranty is good.

I agree on most of their stuff, but there are exceptions.  We have a couple of their pole saws.  They're essentially electric chainsaws on a telescoping pole.  They work really great for trimming trees.  The extended warranty on these will replace the whole saw if the chain is worn.  I'm on my third one.

I stand corrected. Its 300/yr up to 100k and it covered my sun roof seal because water got in and shorted the motor. They cover the motor but to get to it the seal had to be replaced so they covered it. Also the left front spring on the strut broke and they covered that. Then the transmission had a seal go out on some electrical interface that was 250 bucks and they covered that. I have more than covered the cost of the warranty. Like I said,, not usually a fan of extended warranties especially on appliances since I can fix them myself/ but I made exception on these two and came out ahead.

A new saw because of a worn chain !  Maybe thats close to the life limit of the saw. But, you guys are starting to change my mind. I'll just have to remember where the receipt is.

That still is a good price.  Several years ago I paid about $1,200 online to extend the 3 year/36K warranty on my F150 to 7 year/100K.  The dealer wanted over $2,000.

I like the idea of paying a year at a time.  You spend less up front, and it gives them an incentive to cover your claims.

We have an office condition at work when unwanted spam calls come in on personal or work cells.

1.) Phone goes on speaker
2.) See how long we can last providing BS information before they decide to hang-up, or we eventually crack up laughing.
