https://apnews.com/article/election-2020-technology-arrests-michigan-voting-rights-e0d49155dc8f347b1347cf779fd43812

Two notorious conservative operatives were charged Thursday with felonies in connection with false robocalls that aimed to dissuade residents in Detroit and other U.S. cities from voting by mail, Michigan’s attorney general announced.

Jacob Wohl, 22, and Jack Burkman, 54, each face four felony counts in Detroit, including conspiring to intimidate voters in violation of election law and using a computer to commit crimes, Attorney General Dana Nessel said.

The calls falsely warned residents in majority-Black Detroit and urban areas in at least four other states that voting by mail in the Nov. 3 election could subject people to arrest, debt collection and forced vaccination, Nessel said.

The men, who have a history of staging hoaxes and spreading false smears against prominent Democrats and government officials, are not in custody and no date for their arraignments has been set.

Nessel said her office would work with local law enforcement to secure their appearances if necessary, saying the men could face arrest and extradition or could voluntarily come to Michigan to face the charges.

A judge found probable cause Thursday to support the charges, which carry the potential for years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines upon conviction. The computer charges carry up to seven years apiece while election law violations could bring up to five in all.

Nessel’s office warned the public about the calls and launched an investigation in late August after thousands of Detroit residents received them.

Wohl and Burkman both denied involvement at the time. Burkman didn’t immediately reply to a Thursday voicemail seeking comment about the charges and Wohl didn’t immediately reply to an email.

Nessel said the investigation found that Burkman and Wohl created and funded the robocalls in an attempt to deter voters of color from participating in the November election.

“We’re all well aware of the frustrations caused by the millions of nuisance robocalls flooding our cellphones and landlines each day, but this particular message poses grave consequences for our democracy and the principles upon which it was built,” Nessel said. “Michigan voters are entitled to a full, free and fair election in November, and my office will not hesitate to pursue those who jeopardize that.”

Nessel said 85,000 calls were believed to have been made across the nation. She said nearly 12,000 residents in the 313 ZIP code received the calls in Detroit, and that similar calls also blanketed urban pockets of Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois and New York. And she encouraged anyone who received such a call to file a complaint with her office.

Wohl and Burkman have a history of supporting President Donald Trump and attacking his political opponents.

Michigan is a key battleground state that Trump narrowly won in 2016 in part due to a drop in turnout for Hillary Clinton in heavily Democratic Detroit. in Michigan, voters can cast an absentee ballot for any reason, either by mailing it in, dropping it off or filling one out at a clerk’s office.

The caller identified herself as part of Project 1559 and said it was a group founded by Wohl and Burkman. The calls falsely claimed that voting by mail would result in personal information going into databases that will be used by police to resolve old warrants, credit card companies to collect debts and federal officials to track mandatory vaccines.

“Don’t be finessed into giving your private information to the man,” the caller said. “Beware of vote by mail.”

Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, like Nessel a Democrat, in August called the robocalling effort “an unconscionable, indefensible, blatant attempt to lie to citizens about their right to vote.”

She praised Nessel for a swift investigation Thursday, saying the charges show the state will “use every tool at our disposal to dispel false rhetoric” and protect voting rights.

Investigators served search warrants in California, where Wohl lives in Los Angeles, as part of the inquiry last week, Nessel said.

Wohl and Burkman have made a name for themselves by orchestrating political dirty tricks and hoaxes, including spreading false claims of sexual misconduct by Robert Mueller and Pete Buttigieg.

Just last month, the Washington Post said that it was duped into falsely reporting that FBI agents had conducted a raid at Burkman’s home in Arlington, Virginia, when it was actually a staged event featuring actors.

In August, Wohl told The Associated Press that they suspected “leftist pranksters” were behind the robocalls because recipients were shown a caller ID that was Burkman’s mobile number. Burkman called the situation “a joke,” saying nobody would use their mobile number for a robocall and threatening to sue Benson for defamation.

This isn’t the first time the two have come under scrutiny in Michigan.

Last year, a Michigan college student said the duo recruited him to falsely claim he was raped by Democratic presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg and then published the smear without the student’s permission.

Alien, with all the crap democrats are pulling throughout the country to cheat in this election, why are you focused on this? Do you really think it's rampant on the right? Are you ignoring the daily deluge of dem shenanigans?

I find your tunnel vision quite astounding, and your apparent outrage quite amusing.

I am amazed at how you spin voter intimidation, suppression, and other assorted cheating on democrats. They're not the ones removing mailboxes, ballot boxes, sorting machines etc. Those are your guys, buddy.

I have no doubt there are people on both sides of the aisle that would cheat.
The difference is, Dems have been doing it for a lot longer and in much greater numbers.   What's disappointing is, the areas this occurs in doesn't seem to be willing to do anything about it.   I guess things are going the way those in charge want them to.

Wow thank you SOOOOMUCH for posting this.

Since they are so concerned about two people intimidating someone by phone, IM absolutely sure they will start prosecuting the ballots that were thrown out, the ones in boxes by the sides of the roads that were left and the ones just left on the floor of apartments, OH I almost forgot the people who are taking the ballots from the older people and filling them out.

So thanks again, being the bastion of caring about free and fair elections that you are. Nice to know you are on the job.

I will also put this into the category of robo calls that say you owe the SS dept thousands, the warranty companies have a warranty for me and so on.

If you have to be threatened to not vote for the dems your a lost cause anyway and probably would not understand the call.

BTW did you hear the Supreme court ruled against Michigan's governor her response to locking everything down? She is also building an 8 foot wall around her property, hypocrisy abounds.

Its OK. Despite the instances that have been posted of similar democrat shenanigans, we've been assured many times on this board that this sort of thing doesn't happen to the extent that would influence an election.

Wow, not sure why my posting this has irritated some of you soo much.  It's a verified news story and shared it.  It's relevant to the upcoming election and no different (except for who is at fault) from several other threads here noting voter fraud.  I offerred no comment because I felt that the article was clear enough on it's own.

This one story goes way beyond absurdity, not because its not true but because its a drop in the bucket against the backdrop of the thousands of cases of corruption the left propagates. Hell they cannot arrest all the scam phone calls and they get after these two people. Really?

Why did you bring it here, you have plenty of left outlets that would love this story and you could sing Kumbaya with them and rant how bad Trump is.

Its not the story that bothers me its the hypocrisy and lack of treating all corruption, as bad and not holding up the lefts corruption in the same light.

In the ultimate hypocrisy you bring the story here and expect that we should react with horror at the one story, while we bring hundreds and you do not react with horror you defend them.

So I know you will really be upset over this story, in all fairness and this is exactly what I was talking about. You have people on phone, this is person to person contact and someone already proven to harvest ballots to the tune of 700,000 ballots

On September 8, the Biden campaign let the world know that they would be hiring Dallas Jones, Texas political director, to handle similar duties. It did not take long before this connection produced a major story about the dangers of ballot harvesting.

A Biden Campaign operative in Texas is attempting to rig the 2020 election with the help of others in a massive ballot harvesting scheme, according to two private investigators who testified under oath that they have “video evidence, documentation and witnesses” to prove it. With the help of mass mail-in ballots, the illegal ballot harvesting operation could harvest 700,000 ballots, one Harris County Democrat operative allegedly bragged.

The investigators—a former FBI agent and former police officer—claim that Biden’s Texas Political Director Dallas Jones and his cohorts have been “hoarding mail-in and absentee ballots” and ordering operatives to them fill out for people in Harris County illegally, “including dead people, homeless people, and nursing home residents in the 2020 presidential election,”  Patrick Howley of the National File reported.

When compared to other robo call scams like IRS scams, Social Security scams, insurance scams, and the like, I don't see where or how this example rises above these.

If you want to limit this to voting and elections, I don't know how this rises above a basic negative political ad. From either party or interest group. Calling a candidate a Nazi, socialist, criminal, etc. none of which is remotely true yet is aimed to influence the voter just as the example given in the article.

You post this as if you have the the holy grail of political corruption. It isn't. Far from it. On that I would refer you to a certain outgoing President, a presumptive Presidential candidate, and a handful of rouge FBI and Intel agents hell bent on destroying the incoming President.
That is how institutional corruption is done.

Probably not but you sure don't mention it either. Damn near every day we hear of some Democrat commiting voter fraud or ballot harvesting. You find the one story on a republican doing it. Anyone who commits voter fraud should be punished. Period. But I suspect these two will be crucified while Dems that do it will not. Because it's just business as usual for Dems. The biggest voter shenanigan has already been perpetrated on the people and you wont accept that. The BLM and Antifa movement fund raising; for the dems so why should anyone post anything else?

Not to mention the story I posted above is all dem all the way.

Pretty lame really your excuse or even idea to reveal dems or republicans. Just jump through another hoop then Ill believe typical dem platform.

Crap. There's more than you could shake a stick at.

Is everyone frickin at it? Shame, makes us look like a 3rd world country.

https://www.heritage.org/voterfraud

Instead of linking to The Heritage Foundation (snicker), why don't you post some links of actual Dems doing the deed. Not saying there aren't any, but shake that stick a little.

My previous answer didn't post at 3.30 this morning.

If you look at the web site it doesn't state whether a person is D or R!

I used the word everyone. The word EVERYONE tends to be all inclusive and it means EVERYONE!!!

So take your silly little snicker and shove it where................................... uglystupid2

Wow, triggered much?

I did look at the site. Heritage Foundation ? Really?

I did see that no party was mentioned, maybe if you dug a bit deeper on each instance...I looked at two, it wasn't mentioned. I suggested you cite instances of Dems because you're always slamming Dems and the left. This isn't rocket science.

And please don't be so mean, it hurts my feelings.
