I just won't subscribe in order to read a newspaper article.  Based upon the title they are comparing the death of an elected president to Donald Trump having COVID-19.  Not very realistic as the death rate for a person with COVID-19 is less than 1%.

I am sorry. I don't know why it does that for you. I've never subscribed and it lets me read everything. The story really had nothing to do with Trump. It was a look back at some of the details of Harrison's care by the doctors.

Reading about the witch-doctor remedies the poor man got reminds me I don't want to go back in time anytime soon.

I mean, if I was healthy, opium, a brandy toddy and an Indian remedy containing snakeweed, might be entertaining.  And I guess it's as good as anything if you are about to die anyway.

I'm not a big fan of doctors or corporate pharma today either, but it's somewhat better than back then.

One has to ask one's self, why was the article published?  Did Washington Post have a low news day? 

So, here are some examples of suppositions that cannot be backed up by historical fact (which makes the story nothing but someones "thoughts and dreams". 

Harrison’s immune system already was weakened, making him vulnerable to germs. On Friday, he called a doctor. Harrison, who had once studied medicine, said he hadn’t felt well for several days. But he told the physician he was feeling better after taking medicine for “fatigue and mental anxiety.”

How do we know Harrison's immune system was weakened?  The story suggests (not a fact but a suggestion) that it was because he went for a walk in the rain on a cold day.   Does that automatically weaken one's immune system.  One could suggest that it could "activate" one's immune system and thereby make your body more ready to take on a disease.

Next, we have all the older treatments for an illness that were soon discarded as we learned more about diseases.  Did not these treatments contribute to Harrison's demise? 

So, again I ask, why do you think the article was published by the Washington Post on October 6, 2020? 

There is but one answer, the Washington Post wishes to sow discord with the citizens of the United States regarding the health of President Trump. 

Instead of wishing him well and praying that he overcomes the Chinese Virus, they suggest that what we are being told is not true and the President's demise might be near.

uh, ok. I think someone is seeing the boogie man around every corner. I'm not a journalist, but as a reader I think the WP did the story because it is an interesting story that has some parallels to today. They said he had fatigued himself in the campaigning. This was the reason for his weakened system, along with his age.

I see the article as a bit of history but I'm sure the WP has a agenda. I guess the rest of WHH story/history wasn't important concerning his military campaign against the native Americans as it could fit in their typical narrative also.

Odd as it seems a local county school call themselves the Harrison Raiders and resides on the "left" (west) side of the river hasn't come under scrutiny yet.

It wasn't meant to be a biography of Harrison. It was a short little story of the medical care he was given. What I mostly took away from the story was how barbaric we were just a relatively short time back. I guess advances in medicine didn't take shape until the Civil War.

I assure you I quite understand what you posted. Sorry my reply didn't fit your story intention/interpretation but we all have a story to tell even it seemed a little off point in your view.

I agree our medical community has become very accomplished but the same time becoming a little arrogant to point its losing touch with common sense but still is the best in the world.  And hopefully we'll get through these times with a better understanding/respect of others and it can start right here as we speak but...

My sisters married name is Harrison. Her husband tells us he is a descendant of the presidential Harrison’s. He also tells us they were descendants of Sir Francis Drake.
