Question regarding debates in general

So, Since this whole pandemic thing started, my organization (and many others) have moved to working in a virtual environment whenever possible.  After 7 months of meetings and trainings via Zoom or Microsoft Teams it has me thinking - Why not have the remaining debates virtually?  I don't really see a downside short of a major tech issue,

Is there a rule that says they have to debate in person?

Debaters already cheat when it’s in person. Someone could have a whole room full of help that remained off camera. Not a good idea. A big part of the event is to see a real person handle different situations. Body language and actual reactions. Cannot be duplicated on a face time call.

Well, one advantage I can think of is the "Mute all participants" button.

It’s easy to push an agenda even if unrealistic if no one is challenging it. To stand up and defend your position is very telling. Speakers to ones understanding of the issue and ability to do what he says he wants to do. Biden says he’s going to raise everyone’s taxes then he says on a TV add he will cut the taxes on the middle class. He has on his website support for the green new deal but when challenged on it he bailed and said he does not support it. There is a lot communicated at an in person debate other than the spoken word. The look on Bidens face when Trump said “In a sense we caught you too”. Was a look of guilt. He’s a traitor and I hope many people saw that. Unfortunately too many don’t care.
