I don't remember how I got to this subject but was wondering if anyone could tell me if my metal shed that sits on concrete would be a Faraday Cage? Or what I would have to do to it to make it a Faraday Cage. I appreciate all input.
I rode my Bumblee to work today, there, now it is Valk related. LOL!

Subjects like this really really really get me pissed off.  I stopped going to church December 1999 because of all the crap the preacher was preaching about the “Y2K” fiasco, and what happened January 1’st 2000, NOTHING!

I would listen to a lot of “holy rollers” put the fear of “what if….” Into the minds of people, using fear to get people to “repent” because the end was near!!!

Well, here we are now ten years after the fact and now it’s not the “Y2K” but the year 2012!!  And the Iranians building nuclear bombs, and global warming, and them damn democrats wanting health care!!!

Do me a favor, stop worrying about what might, or might not happen, instead hug your kids when they wake up, and remember to kiss them good night.  That’s all that really matters.  And if you haven’t called your parents in a while, do that right now.

“Y2K” fiasco????

Granted all the NON-computer  related predictions were mostly crap.

But 10,000+ of my closest friends and myself spent many days, nites and hours, fixing/repairing all the computer software and firmware to tolerate Y2K so that nothing would happen.

Apparently we did a very good job, since no one noticed. Well I guess that is the thanks we get, except for the pay and the knowledge that we did prevent some very serious computer interruptions, like keeping your checks from bouncing and all your records from being purging, etc.

Yeah I even remember working all day and night, New Years Eve and Day, monitoring Computers as the time changed around the world to make sure that you were not affected.

Your welcome, Pete.

PS ..... Just setting the record straight, so you would know.

Uh... HUH? What was THAT all about? I love Faraday cages... That way when I'm oncall for work, I just sit inside of one, and I can honestly say Yep, my pager was on! Nope, I didn't get any pages, why?

(And yeah, I was also one of those IT geeks who worked his butt off and put in many many MANY hours to make sure Y2K went smoothly... There were a LOT of us... And yeah, I get bitter too that our accomplishment is thanked by calling us chicken littles...)

As one of those nasty IT folks who REFUSED to work on Y2K projects - nya nya nya - I had a very restful & quiet New Years Day that year Smiley

The issue with the Y2K bug was caused by bean counters not programmers. WAYYYYYY back in history when geeks were cheap and hardware was expensive we were INSTRUCTED by bean counters to shave off the the 2 millenium/century numbers to save space on those highly expensive harddrives.

By the time 1998 came around I just giggled and reminded them of an old IT saying - "Your lack of planning is no reason for me to panic".

And even now when I work on projects that are set up to fail by bean counters killing all the planned hours allocated to planning and design, I smile  Smiley

You would think by now someone would remember that old Oil Change commerical = "You can pay me now, or you can pay me later".

(And yes I change my oil regularly in my Valk - again Valk related now)  - Merry Merry and Happy Happy all and sundry

Thanks for pointing this out. I was there with you spending many hours updating and reprogramming equipment so that we could say "nothing happened!"  Just saying...

Our cage was a completely surrounded by a pretty heavy gauge, closely knit copper screen and referred to as "th' screen room". Used it to align the testing equipment....Merry Christmas everyone....

Less than a handful of years ago I was stationed on Roi-Namur in the Marshall Islands.
http://www.smdc.army.mil/KWAJ/RangeInst/ALTAIR.html
Come mission time they would have to close down the Namur side of the island when they cranked up the Altair radar.
As I understand it something like 8 million watts of power. (Valued) people were not allowed outside and the buildings on that side of the island were covered in metal to keep out the RF. You would see tin foil in barracks windows not to keep out light but to block stray RF. My alarm clock never worked very well while I was there.

Crazy stuff crazy2

Now I work in a room with two inch steel walls (at least they are not padded  Grin ), and folks wonder why I never answer my cell phone at work. cooldude

Faraday cages can be very       large.

If I remember correctly a tin building will block or attenuate RF, bandwidth given by some greek formula that ARRL would be better at providing. If you strap the sides of the metal building to say a 8 foot grounding rod at each corner I would say it would block most RF.
But that was just SWAG. (scientific wild ass guess) uglystupid2

The center portion of our building at work is shielded with a copper mesh that is energized to stop stray emissions from our equipment. (It was originally one of those secret squirrel places that fuels some of the best conspiracy theories you will ever hear.) Evil  Cell Phone call? You MUST be kidding.   coolsmiley

In fact I was.
If I get caught with a cell phone or any electronic recording device at work, lost clearance, lost job, maybe prison time.  Lips Sealed
So I everything except the glucometer stays outside in the truck or the scooter if it is WARM enough to ride.
I do not even get to take my Fagerstrom electronic pipes into work.  Sad

Merry Christmas y'all

You’re right, I did go overboard with my reply, but I read Hotglues thing, and it got to me.

As for the Faraday cage, I do believe if you just had a steal shed that would work fine with grounding rods, make sure you clean off the paint to get the material to conduct RF well.  You may want to put a good non insulated grounding wire around it grounding each panel since most of the time those panels are pre painted and have a plastic washer protecting the paint from getting scratched up from the screws that hold each panel together.

Once again, I apologize for thinking you were a “fear freak” over some Iranians….

Same here. We spent 4 years making Y2K a non-event and that has now somehow become just another Old Wives tale. All the inventory and prioritizing of systems and programs, developing implementation plans, cross application interfaces, testing plans, reviewing every record layout on every computer system through out the entire company, the actual testing for the 24 month period of June 98 through June 00, coordinating implementations, and then there was New Years Eve 1999 when we had VPs calling in to make sure everything was OK. By the end of the 1st week of 00 and all was still right in the world they gave us a pat on the back and a free breakfast.

Your right it was a HUGE application issue. But Y2K also related to operating systems and firmware as some computers and operating systems did not understand a 2000 year date and would default to 1982, 1901 or something else.

Many  had to change hardware, upgrade operating systems and change applications. SO it was not trivial it was a major effort.

Everyone involved should be proud that to the world it seemed like a non-event, Congratulation to all who participated - JOB WELL DONE.   Pete.

Enough said  -  good luck on the Faraday cage  -  check those GROUND STRAPS, you cannot have to many or to good a ground.
