This is my eldest, age 51, she had a double mastectomy at age 40 due to breast cancer. A little over a year ago it came back in her bones, among other places. Her dr. put her on chemo and radiation therapy, the result was that last year at this time she was so run down and weak she couldn't continue teaching. She applied for, and received, permission to take a Sabbatical leave during this past Spring semester. Her hopes were to be able to regain her health and strength enough to enable her to return to the classroom this fall. It wasn't to be, and she and her dr. realized that early this past summer, so she applied for early retirement(only about 2 1/2 yrs. early) with disability and it was granted. During the summer she had a PET scan and it showed no activity so the dr. took her off chemo. With that move, her strength returned in quick order. Probably not having the stress of the classroom helped as well. This past Monday she had another PET scan, she notified me last evening it also came out great....no activity whatsoever. The lines between Florida and Louisiana were a bit damp for a while last night. Having lost daughter #3 to cancer about 2 1/2 yrs. ago, I was sick with the thought I might lose another. It was a Christmast present I had been praying for.

John,

While reading your post, my heart sank in sorrow.

My father died two weeks, four days ago from lung cancer.  My mother now sits in a quite, house 2000 miles from us.  My brother that lives 7 miles away does what ever he can to comfort her, but he is only one person, and you can not ask any other to fill in for my deceased father.

The worst thing about cancer is you never know when death will come.  You never know what will happen next.

I am happy for your daughter.  I am happy for you.  Enjoy her this Christmas.  I’ll be thinking of you.

Al.

Great strides have been made against cancer in the last few years.  I am looking forward to the day that it can be eradicated as was polio and malaria.  John, I am so happy for you, my friend.  May you have a Merry Christmas and may 2010 smile upon you and yours...Jim  Smiley
