I don't think so.
I've been running "off road" 80/100 H4 halogens in my two interstates for several years, with just the OE relays and no problems. And no retainer rings either.

I have not had any heat/wiring/socket/fuse trouble; the fairing breathes and cools well.
I did not have to do any re-aiming, and I never get flashed with twin 80s on low beams.
Other than maybe flashing someone, I never run on high beams; the increase draw to 80watts X 2 constant (over 55 X 2) is enough (and I do not run all sorts of other electricals like some do). And I rarely ride at night (which disappoints the bugs).
