Mark, I also have had very good luck with Utube fixing things myself.  And I searched and found the 3 most common problems with whirlpool washers;  the easiest one, the lid (up-down) sensor, which any idiot could fix in 10 minutes.  The others were much more complicated (like the water pump).

So I just waited for the repairman to show, and then he diagnosed the lid switch in one minute.  He didn't have the switch on hand, so I asked him to just jumper the switch, and after warning me of the safety issue (bleh), he did that for me in four minutes (one 3-inch wire).

So the charge was only the $100 minimum just to show up.

So I felt pretty stupid, though I've been very busy with other things, and it might not have been the lid.

The good news is, he told me my washer (and dryer) is far better than any new ones sold today, and to never replace them, just fix when needed.  My drier I brought with me from the Air Force in 1992, and it's never needed one repair. (though saying that out loud is probably a big mistake)

So I gave him a tip and a 5-star rating on-line (in case I need him again).   Grin
