At 65 miles per, she hit me hard in my back about shoulder high and whacked the back of my helmet. First thoughts stay on line and that was a hard hit. I guess trying to jump on board the pillion seat at 65 is a tiny bit difficult even for a deer. Broke both of her front legs and her jaw, I suppose on a poor landing which I did not see. Only took out my right rear armrest and left me still on two wheels, slowing to a u-turn. I went back and found her in a poor state of affair. Just a tad over one hundred miles from home and no truck. Picked up the parts that I could find and said my good by, by sending her home. So now I am in search of body parts, but by grace not my own. Ouch! But even as hard as it's getting to find parts for our ladies, still easier than finding parts for our riders, so glad to hear it went the way it went!

Glad you rode it out, was there a change of underwear in order? I know it would have been for me.

Second time in my life dealing with a deer. Each time it has happened so fast that there is no time to think, best to just stay the course and ride your line. Has worked so far and is part of riding.

All of us have encountered a bug out of nowhere - >splat< to our windshield. That's how I imagine a deer hit will be...

Wow! Glad to hear it turned out well for you.. fortunately I've yet to encounter a deer.. had to slow for cows and a family of turkeys once, but nothing like that, man that sounds like it could have been disastrous.

My one deer story was at dusk, in a car , in a location largely devoid of other traffic, in a rural area. Like others have said - it happened so fast that we didn't realize what was happening until BAM.
It does make me cautious about riding at dusk, because I have SEEN deer all over around here.

It's well to remember the white tail rut season is October 23 to November 1 (says the WW interflub).
They are extra crazy, and females are as likely running from horny bucks as the other way round.
The worst deer stories I have, is when riding with a small group, we've taken a break and one of the other guys asks me if I saw those 4 deer right next to the road a few miles back, and I didn't see them at all (ignorance is bliss... so far).
I've done good at missing the ones I see (black bear and pedestrians too).

Good you faired well with this encounter. Fortunately end of riding season and deer season occur about the same time for me but I do ride with "deerdar" on year around but it works on for other road hazards to. I look back over the years when deer weren't as plentiful? and wonder how in the hell I didn't have any wildlife encounters until the past 10 yrs. or so. And a fat old racoon is nothing more than a slight double bump under Valkyrie tires surprisingly. I was definitely prepared for more drama than what occurred. Cap' D on HSN took a broadside a year ago or so. He faired well with some cracked ribs.

Wow, a fortunate outcome for you. Great job keeping the bike on line too. That deer trying to make a leap at a moving MC as you approached didn't realize that size does matter. I was leading 2 others on our Sat. AM RTE yesterday on the back roads of S. Alabama; constantly look for deer this time of year. (temps around 50) About 5 miles south on County Rd 42 south of Evergreen I look right and there is a field of maybe 15 Turkeys and not a mile up the road 5-6 deer thinking of making a crossing. I believe my 2-brothers alerts them maybe not a good idea. Flashing my rear break lights for my 2 riders following we slow down to about 45 mph just in case, as we see them all turn aound and go back in the woods.

I only hit one deer on a GW. The damn thing did not have insurance. I rode the bike home , about 40 miles. A guy I worked with hit three black Angus at different times. Three separate accidents. Talk about bad luck.

at least with Angus or cows (cows roam wild here also) you can collect from insurance proceeds from the farmer who let the cows/cattle loose. Just last week I came close on cycle to hitting a smaller 5-6 pt buck. It was close enough to see horns although not sure if was a 5 or 6 pointer. If the darn thing kept walking across the road vs. staying right in front of me at the worst time it would not have been that close. Few years ago coming home at 1130 p.m. from work on my 250cc scooter a HUGE buck crossed right in front of me just outside of town me going around a 20 mph corner it was so close to my front I heard the clip clop of hooves right in front of me on the concrete. I slowly went forward after that and the darn thing circles back around crossing right in front of me again but this time not 5 yards in front of me but 20 yards or so. I think a Valk offers more protection than a 350lb. scooter. Wife winged a deer once barely noticeable no claim while I did front end/quarter panel damage 3 years ago with my then near new truck coming home from work at 7 p.m at night in the rain/fog about 1 second to react and swerved to avoid it just winged it right side if not served all the way over to the left side of road doing 50 mph it would have been a head on collision well over 5K damage vs. only 2K. Probably should not even filed a claim since had 500 deductible and a-hole insurance company raised my rates on a comprehensive claim accident free for 30 years at a rate increase of near 15% on all 5 of my vehicles NOT just the truck. The rate increase now stays that way until 5 years is up and am sure over that time the rate increase on 5 vehicles for 5 years is pretty close to the extra 1500 cash I would have had to shell out upfront if not filing a claim. Insurance sucks, damn if you have it, darn if you do not have it. Either using it or not using it, you get socked with higher costs. I think liability insurance is needed for lawsuits in case you hit someone and you responsible, but medical, comp, collision, etc. should be optional, especially if you have an older car worth say 5K or less. Even a minor deer collision on most vehicles is 2 grand and wanna bet the insurance companies will want to total your car out if only 2-3K in damages if driving a 4-5K car and wanna bet they ONLY will give you 3K for it vs. 4-5K for an outright sale. Anyway, glad you held her upright but by judging how the deer jumped right over your back shoulder you could have had a rear seat passenger thrashing around while slowing down as well.
