I got a set of non-molested OEM pipes off eBay, and when I opened the box it REEKED of oil. I didn't think of it at the time, in hindsight I should have investigated a little further.
Went through the ordeal of putting 'em on (Side quest - Is there a trick to getting new exhaust gaskets to stay in place while trying to seat the headers? Ugh!) and buttoned the bike back up, started her up and that soft sweet purr of an unmolested OEM exhaust met my ears (And seemed to be a much smoother running bike!) however.....
After idling for 30 seconds or so, white smoke started coming out the left exhaust. LOTS of white smoke.
I'm hypothesizing that in their prior life something happened to let oil leak into the exhaust (Hydrolock?) and now the innards are oil soaked.
Unless someone says authoritatively that's a bad idea I plan to just ride it and hope to burn the oil out (And carry a fire extinguisher for the time being!) .....
Thoughts?

That's probably what I'd do.
Unless the smoke was like fogging up the neighborhood, attracting negative attention.
Too bad you didn't stand them up to see if anything ran out, for a day or three.

Next time use a little grease to hold the exhaust gaskets in place. It will burn off as you drive and makes the install much easier.

On the exhaust gaskets, I give them a squeeze so they become a little egg-shaped. Then, when you tweak them into the cutouts in the heads, they stay.
I'd ride the bike and keep the RPMs up to get the pipes nice and warm. Should burn the residue out fairly quickly. Probably still smell in for awhile, though.
Back at one of the auto shops I worked at, we had a good time messing with each other. Harmless pranks mostly, but some got fairly complicated. This was one of the simple ones: When someone would have the top end of an engine off for whatever reason, it was common for one of us to pour a little oil down the front exhaust pipe. Was always a good show when the engine was back together. Shortly after the startup, the smoke would start pouring out the tailpipe. Of course, if you just had an engine apart, you think something bad happened. At least, until you see the rest of the guys in the shop in one area laughing and pointing. We had to retire that prank for the most part; catalytic converters don't deal well with oil quenching, and they get damn pricey.

The prank in the shop bay that I did not appreciate was being shot with the grease gun (run straight off our commercial grade air compressor). What a freekin' gooey mess (head to toe).
When it happened to someone else it was hilarious.

The "squeeze" trick is good, I hadn't thought of grease... I
do a similar thing with Hi Temp RTV. I used to coat similar parts
on my CR500 with Hi Temp RTV regularly. All my exhaust
noise came out of the end of my silencer, instead of 50%
out from where the expansion chamber header was
loosely bolted onto the motor...

A nice leisurely 40 mile ride at ~90 seems to have cleared the problem up nicely... Still a little smell, but no visible smoke at all now...

Hahaha Sounds like a ride on a San Diego freeway ... exaggeration of course, but 85 is pretty common ...we do things a little differently here in The Republic of Texas...   |

Dammit Serk!  just another reason for me to hate the PRC (People's Republic of California)  Gonna have to drink me some nice rye whiskey tonight
