I’m planning a motorcycle trip from the east coast to the west coast next May does anyone know what the rules of traveling are or will be ? I just came back from Massachusetts and I had to get tested before I left so the place I was staying at would let me stay there in Massachusetts but nothing about me coming back home, just wondering if anyone has ran into any trouble across the states

My guess is that no one can look that far ahead into the future and suggest with any accuracy what things will be like then. Heck I don't think one can guess what things are going to be like in January right now.

If you plan on camping try to get to the site well before dark as grounds do fill up.
I do not camp anymore but if I had to sleep outside for a night would be ok with that as have a mini bivi bag
I plan ahead more than many (certainly more than DDT) and make a list of places I would stop at if I go so many miles that day. About a week out you can call each and find out restrictions and almost certainly will be ok. Also it seems,and I am amazed at that, folks enjoy my company (maybe because I offer to pay for the beer) so recommendations are always spot on.
What routes are you looking at 2 (far north) or what?

I’m stopping in Albuquerque to see a friend then hit the million dollar hyway in Colorado trouble 550 from there just all the normal spots like 4 corners, arches, Zion, monument valley around that area, if we have enough time maybe Yosemite but I don’t think we will have enough time for that

If you have time ride to the top of Moki Dugway. Excellent view. Hite Overlook near Hanksville, UT Goblin Valley State Park near Hanksville, UT Dead Horse Point, near Moab UT Grand Junction. Colorado National Monument Mesa Verde National Park If you haven't already get a National Parks Pass before you go. Zion is beautiful. In Colorado I'd say don't waste your time at 4 Corners. Unless you just want to say you've been there. Also the word is they didn't locate the marker accurately but it's too much $$$$ to do that. It's nothing but a cement circle in the desert with Indian rip-off souvenir cubicles around it. Somebody once tried to do the horizontal tango on the marker in the wee hours so they could join a bogus "4 Corners Club" but they got busted. Nearby is Mesa Verde - the Indian cliff dwellings. Worth a tour if they are still letting folks down into the Cliff Palace site. Other places not to miss in Coloarado: The Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Specifically the ride from Blue Mesa Dam to Crawford Co on Hwy 92. Excellent well maintained mountain twisty road with great overlooks. Not to mention the Mad Dog Ranch Fountain Cafe in Crawford that used to be owned & run by Pam and Joe Cocker before he died. Not far NW of Crawford then Hotchkiss is the Grand Mesa. There's Slumgullian Pass between Creede CO and Lake City on highway 149 up the headwaters of the Rio Grande. Spectacular road. Much 1800's history there as well as so much of Colorado. There are many more great sights/road in Co - Hwy 141 along the Dolores river west of Hwy 550 between Ouray and Grand Junction comes to mind. At the NW bend in that road is Gateway - spectacular canyon vistas all along south of there while Gateway has the Gateway Auto Museum (used to be Discover's project) - A fabulous collection of cars from the earliest throiugh the muscle car era. Really good cafe there too. But lodging is very spendy at their resort - check it out at http://gatewayautomuseum.com/ On North of there is the Colorado Monument along I-70. Another great road is Independence Pass between Twin Lakes & Aspen - Hwy 82. The postcard lake/canyon view of Maroon Bells is just SW of Aspen on road 13 - this is your view there.  |

I need to rephrase about Moki Dugway.
Ride to the over look approaching form the north unless you want to ride up some pretty hairy sandy dirt road with switchbacks.
I did it and would not want to do it again.

I rode the Dugway years ago when I was younger & dumber on Deerslayer. Don't remember it being horrendous but it was less comfy than other roads. Maybe worse now likely prefer a KLR I think.

Forgot to mention - May can be iffy travelling the high country in Coloradp. They try to get Trail Ridge Road open by Memorial weekend. It's the highest paved pass on the continent. They get drifts 20ft deep up there on the pass which hits 12,183 ft. Watch the weather reports before you try to ride high. The highway patrol has road reports online. If you have a choice to delay a month that would be safer. Still not too brutally hot in Utah yet, typically. Speaking of Utah, you might want to consider seeing Monument Valley on the Utah-Az. border. John Ford - and John Wayne movie country.

Rent a jeep in moab and hit Canyonlands. Well worth it. Monument valley and Moki dugway, Id rent a jeep. Be our 2nd summer in that area.
