I lived through the muscle car craze although I never got to fully participate due to a severe lack of funds. Then the insurance industry put the kabosh on the industry, then the emissions laws killed what was left. The rest of the seventies and most all of the eighties I lamented that performance was dead and that the only way to have a performance vehicle was to build one. This probably ushered in the performance aftermarket explosion that just seems to keep getting bigger.

With the growth and development of computer use to both design and operated cars performance has come roaring back in the last 25 years. And now that every manufacturer has offerings for the horsepower junkie I find myself still woefully under funded to take advantage the the choices available. But the manufacturers just keep tempting me with vehicles that I have never really considered, or at the very least would be way down on my list.

Then I get this in my email today,

Nice!  Maybe in 15 years I could afford a used one.

My 1998 Toyota 4 Runner zombie apocalypse (4WD) suits my pocket just fine.

Cost me $1,500 18 months ago.

I too looked at Jeeps about 5 years ago, lusted is probably the better term.  Just couldn't stomach the price, even a used one.  Found this on Craigslist and ran for it.  $3200, but needed an honest extra $500 in parts that I did myself (fusebox, alternator, battery).  The Brits are great with helping out on forums too.

Meh. I got the same email.

At the end of the day it's still a Fiat and a Chrysler.  I built a Rubicon three years ago and while fun it was not terribly reliable and unless they beefed that drivetrain up by at least $15-20K in upsized diffs, axles, TCases and drive shafts that thing is going to be as unreliable as the current offerings.

I have a new Bronco Badlands reserved but I am really waiting for the Warthog. Hopefully more info to come soon but it is rumored to have the Raptor motor in it which should put it somewhere near 500HP in a much more reliable package.

There are always good deals out there on used vehicles and with the financing for longer terms you have plenty to choose from. Some pickups are going for 80k so that is in line with most performance cars.

I'm driving a weathered old Ford Ranger.  I like the six banger 4l engine, but the truck is pretty ragged and has some rust under the carriage.  It has suffered a couple blows including a bad deer strike but it keeps ticking.  Locally, anyway.  I keep thinking maybe an inexpensive paint job, tune 'er up and shoot for another 1OOk.  Or, screw the "prestigious" paint job and just go for the tune up.   Or find something a bit more road worthy similar to the posted pics...

Old beater trucks are less frowned upon in Western Colorado than in some areas.

If I ever spent 50 - 80k on a vehicle, I might as well just move into it!  I.O.W., not happening.  Ever.

If it runs as good as it looks, you really did well. I don’t seem to run across deals like that, maybe I’m not looking in the right places.

Ladyfriend bought a 2020 2 door Jeep thing last year.

Having driven/ridden it in for a few thousand miles I'm pleased she likes it.

I have the 392 in my 2016 Challenger Scatpack.  Great motor!  Lots of power!  Turn off traction control and you can destroy a couple of tires in an afternoon.  But then you can cruise from NY to FL and get 25 mpg.

I worked out a 2021 6 cyl Rubicon with all the features I like and it came to over $50K.  The upgraded Moyer will require a upgrade to the suspension and brakes at minimum.  Won’t be cheap.
