Surprising he lasted this long considering the kind of life he lead, especially immediately following his playing days. Truly a wondrous player, if he had had the same commitment to a healthy and ethical lifestyle that Pele had, he would be have been considered at an equal level on the all time greatest player list.
Certainly that 1st goal in that game wouldn't have been allowed in this day and age of VAR, but his 2nd goal more than made up for it...one of the all time best WC goals.

Mexico 1986 is also the one and only time Canada has ever qualified for the WC. While they didn't score a goal in their one and only round, they did play well in a very tough group draw. Real "football"...greatest game on the planet Grin

Soccer sucks.  Grin

My kids played soccer when they were little. I got told I had to coach them or they wouldn’t have a coach and couldn’t have a team. So I did. I coached it like a true Canadian dad. You play defence. You play Centre. You’re right wing. You’re left wing.

I had one little brat who clearly was a fan of professional soccer. Kid was diving anytime anyone got within 6 feet of him. Went down like he was shot. I’d have to go out there every time and watch him roll around in the dirt. He’d get up and walk to the sidelines and want to go back on right away. One time I got sick of it and sat him. I said the way you were rolling around, you were clearly hurt and it would be irresponsible of me as a coach to play an injured player. He sat the rest of the game. Didn’t go down again for the rest of the season.

So yeah. Soccer sucks.

That's only certain nationalities that dive excessively...oh and I guess the odd kid from Saskatchewan... mmm... seems to me the coach may have been the problem there  Wink  When you come out to BC next Summer you can check out one of my games... trust me, at our age none of us are diving on purpose... it's too darn hard to get back up again 2funny

I would have thought as a lifelong Oilers fan, you'd be OK with diving, what with the King of all hockey divers Gretzky on that team in their heyday.

I always found soccer and hockey to be quite similar in nature.

In soccer, everyone runs up and down the field at full speed passing the ball all day long, and every few hours, someone actually might score a goal.

It's the same thing in hockey, except the field is smaller and slipperier, and they use skates, sticks and a puck.

But the fights in hockey are way better than in soccer.  (and I understand why, if I had to skate my ass off at top speed all day long but only score a goal once a month, I'd want to punch everyone too)

And the soccer players have more of their own teeth.
