Maybe Serk can provide some feedback but, it seems to me, its a simple process to build a machine that reads the "thing" that holds the information about how a vote was made and add it to a list.
This would be a simple ID with a count for each ID. There would be, it would seem, something like a checksum, that would change as the count changed so you would not just be able to change the count since that would void the checksum
All this stuff is in a file, it would seem. I always thought you could, to some degree, control who had access to that file. So, you would have to have special privileges to access the file to change the vote totals.
This all seems so simple.
But, from the testimony, the voting machines are seemingly very complex and prone to failure on a daily basis and have to be "attended to".
It just does not seem right.
In the early 1980"s I purchased a kit for a SWTP 6800 and built my first computer. It used a cassette tape system for data storage and retrieval. I don't think I ever lost any data. But a voting system we use for our Presidential elections seemly losses data and needs "help" all the time.
Something is really fishy.

This is WHY I questioned how ANYBODY could build a serious voting system, with sufficient security and redundancy, on WINDOWS.
Anybody who has done a decent amount of Windows support would know this, especially if a reasonable amount of that time was spent on the server side of Admin.
